Draft Class 2002 Joshua Murray was selected by the Brewers in the 2nd round of the 2002 amateur draft. The 18-year-old, 6' 1" shortstop from Jesuit High School in Tampa, Florida, never got to see his name on the backs of jerseys all around Miller Park. Twelve years later he was back in the spotlight winning the heart of Andi Dorfman in the ABC show "The Bachelorette." Murray is no different than most draftees who spend their time down in the minors, hoping to get the call that will, hopefully, change their lives forever. Unfortunately, most never make a 25-man roster. Let's take a look back at the 2002 draft where only two of the Brewers' first 10 picks made it to the Bigs, one draftee played in the NFL, and one of their 42 draft picks that year is a three time all-star and two time World Series Champion. 1. Prince Fielder (1B) - The five-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger Award winner, 2007 NL home run leader (50), two-time Home Run Derby Champion (2009, 2012) and 2011 All-Star Game MVP, spent seven seasons with the Brewers (2005-2011) before signing a nine-year, $214 million contract with the Detroit Tigers in 2012. After the 2013 season, Prince was traded to the Texas Rangers. 2. Joshua Murray (SS) - He spent six seasons in the minors (2002-2006), never making it higher than High-A ball for Brevard County. His career minor league average was .213, and he spent the 2007 season with the Charlotte County Redfish of the Independent League. 3. Eric Thomas (P) - He spent the first two of his four seasons (2002, 2005, 2007-2008) in the Brewers organization, never making it higher than High-A ball for Brevard County. His record was 0-7 with one save. In 2007-2008, he was in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's organization and also played Independent ball. 4. Nic Carter (OF) - He spent two seasons in the minors, never making it higher than A-ball for Beloit. He had a career minor league batting average of .218 and won one game in Rookie ball with Helena. 5. Jarrad Page (SS) - He was drafted out of high school, but decided to attend UCLA. He spent six seasons (2006-2011) in the NFL (KC, NE, PHI, and MIN). 6. Khalid Ballouli (P) - Spent five seasons in the Brewers organization (2002-2006). His last stop was with Double-A Huntsville. He retired with a 22-29 record. 7. Tom Wilhelmsen (P) - He spent one season (2003) in the organization with the AZL Brewers (Rookie) and in Single-A Beloit, before deciding to quit baseball because of his off the field drug issues. In 2010, he signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners and is currently on the team's active roster. 8. Stephen Kahn (P) - He was drafted out of high school, but did not sign. He spent three years at Loyola Marymount University before being drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2005. He played five seasons (2005, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012) in the Mariners organization. 9. Edwin Walker (P) - He spent three seasons (2002-2004) in the Brewers organization, never making it higher than Rookie ball in Helena where he posted a career 5-4 record in 28 games. He played in the New York Yankees and Houston Astros farm systems (2009-2010) and also played Independent ball in 2008, 2009, 2011-2013). 10. Jeremy Frost (C) - He spent three seasons (2002-2004) in the Brewers organization, reaching the High-A ball High Desert Mavericks. He played Independent ball in 2005-2006, before his last minor league season in Double-A ball for the Birmingham Barons, a Chicago White Sox affiliate. Other notable draftees in 2002: 16. Dana Eveland (P) - He has spent nine seasons in the Majors (2005-2012, 2014), two of them in Milwaukee (2005-2006) and is currently with the New York Mets. 34. Tim Dillard (C) - Originally drafted out of high school by the Brewers in the 15th round of the 2001 draft, but he didn't sign. He spent four years with the Brewers (2008-2009, 2011-2012) and currently is on the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox roster. 40. Hunter Pence (OF) - Yes, Hunter Pence was originally drafted by the Brewers in 2002, but did not sign. He spent two seasons playing college baseball at the University of Texas-Arlington before being drafted by the Houston Astros in 2004. He has spent the last eight seasons in the Major Leagues, playing for Houston, the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants. The three-time All-Star (2009, 2011, 2014) has won two World Series Championships with the Giants (2012, 2014). The odds of making it to the Major Leagues are very slim. The ones that do may be named the All-Star Game MVP, or even win a World Championship. But if you're not one of the lucky ones, you may just get the girl. UPDATE: They broke up!
