PAHALA HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1958 NEWSLETTER Spring Edition, 2015
BELATED HOLIDAY GREETINGS!
Here are a couple of cards received after the winter edition was published. Catching up!
And a thank you card from Martha Funai Hoki:
Dear Joe, Laura and the Class of 1958 (PHS),
Thanks for the love, concern and contribution. We truly appreciate your thoughtfulness. We will
certainly miss Murray but know that we will be reunited with him again. That was a really nice card
of “Remembering Murray”. THANKS! Love, Martha and Family
Dearest Classmates,
Whatever is beautiful,
whatever is meaningful,
whatever brings you happiness…
May it be yours this Holiday Season
and throughout the coming year!
Holidays are here again and we are caught pressed for
time. Sending this belated greeting with love and
blessings to all. Sorry we were unable to join you on
the Big Island in August. It was great to hear of that
reunion in the last newsletter. Hope to see all in Vegas
in June for the All-Ka’u reunion.
Season’s greetings to all and take care of one another in
2015… The Nishimotos,
Jean, Rich, J.C. & Phoebe, too.
Dear Classmates,
Happy New Year! Hope you are all well. Seisho
and I are O.K. Please take good care of
yourselves.

ANOTHER CLASSMATE HAS DEPARTED! Dolly Silva Kalua sent an email message to announce that her brother and our classmate, Thomas “Tommy” Silva passed away on February 17th at Queen’s Hospital West on Oahu. It is with deep regret that Tommy never made it to any of our reunions as I have fond memories of him. Beginning in the first grade, he and Norman Teramoto were the first friends that I made while I tried to cope with the loneliness of not knowing anyone else in the class. Luckily, Mr. Capellas happened to be there during our first recess and consoled my blubbering self by introducing me to Tommy and Norman who were watching us with curiosity. It prevented a traumatic start to my educational experiences and I am grateful for having known him. Please rest in peace, Tommy, until we meet once again.
THE PAHALA-KA’U HIGH SCHOOL REUNION IN LAS VEGAS, JUNE 18 – 21, 2015
Please remember our next reunion is scheduled for June 18 – 21 this summer at the California Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Our Class of 1958 will have its 75th birthday party on June 18th at a suite to be determined. We will then join the Pahala-Ka’u reunion for the rest of the weekend. Check the postings at the elevators across from the escalators to the mezzanine floor for the room numbers. All classmates attending our 75th birthday party must contact Virgie Ishikawa (email to [email protected], or call 702-889-9450, or send a letter to 7517 Tamarind Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89147). It will be a no-host celebration where you must order your meal box through Virgie so it can be delivered to the Class of 1958 suite. It is also a BYOB (bring your own beverage) affair except a limited supply of bottled water will be made available. This revised procedure will reduce the burden for Virgie and her committee in preparing for our function. We’re all getting along in years and need to plan smarter for easier festivities. Let Virgie know of your plans for the number in your party by June 11th so she’ll have a week to make adjustments to her meal box order. REMEMBER, no order by June 11th means no food on the 18th. Please contact Virgie as soon as possible as we want to have a nice birthday party with as many remaining living classmates that we have left. We’re not getting any younger!!! We will join the Pahala-Ka’u High School reunion on Friday, June 19th and through the weekend. For those who “lost” the information, I’ll publish the schedule and registration form later in this edition. First, allow me to show some extra pictures showing the fun we had last year.
This was picture-in-waiting for the Class of 1958 as we had a few of us still on “Hawaiian time”. We eventually got the others there and had a nice crowd gathered as pictured in the Summer edition, with the addition of spouses and other family members who were in attendance.

There has been some confusion regarding this year’s festivities as the
Pahala Community Center was initially reserved for August 16, 2015.
Following the established past protocol, the date has been changed to
August 23, 2015.
This will coincide with having it on the Statehood Day weekend. This allows attendees the
use of the 3-day weekend for travel and other activities. Some classes have arranged their
own reunions for Friday and/or Saturday while concluding the weekend by attending the
Ka’u High School Alumni & Friends Potluck Luncheon on Sunday. The Class of 1958 will meet for an informal 75
th birthday party in Hilo at 11:30 a.m. on
Saturday, August 22, 2015 at a restaurant to be announced. This will allow the classmates
on the Planning/Organizing Committee for Sunday’s Potluck Luncheon the necessary
preparation time afterwards to do their duties for a successful reunion. James Yamaki,
Margaret Louis Cabudol, Jane Naboa Santiago continue to provide support to this annual
event. We appreciate their contributions as well as the rest of their committee. The Class of 1959 usually assembles on Saturday and Sunday at one of the vacation rental
units; this year it will be at the old Plantation Manager’s residence. Reportedly, the Class
of 1981 will gather at Shaka’s Restaurant in Naalehu at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday for their
own reunion dinner. The Class of 1961 as well as the Class of 1965 are also planning their
own reunions to coincide with the Las Vegas and Ka’u events. The Class of 1973 has
reserved the Pahala Community Center on Saturday for their 60th
birthday party. Other
classes are probably planning their own anniversary or birthday celebrations. We’ve
always said that the “more the merrier!” The Las Vegas and Pahala reunions have truly become the best community gatherings
enjoyed by so many people of Ka’u, at home and also at our 9th
Island “home away from
home.” I’ll close with a few pictures from last year’s Potluck reunion in Pahala.
