1. General Description PHYM series low expansion foam proportioning device (hereinafter referred to as “the device”) is designed for use in fixed foam fire extinguishing systems. It is mainly used at places where low expansion foam extinguishing system is required for protection, such as, oil field, oil refining plant, petrochemical plant, garage, plane warehouse, oil ship and dock etc. It supplies a foam solution at a certain proportioning ratio to the foam generator, nozzle, branch pipe, monitor and other discharge devices to produce foam for extinguishing class B water-soluble fires as well as non water-resistance fires, etc. This device adopts low expansion foam concentrate. AFFF type foam concentrate (hereinafter referred to as “foam concentrate”.) is recommended. Executive standard of the device: Q/3201NXQ109-2000, Low Expansion Foam Fire Extinguishing System Component. 1.1 Type descriptions: PH YM 64 / □ Capacity of storage (L) Max. flow rate 64L/s Foam proportioning device Foam device E.g. PHYM64/3000 indicates that the capacity of storage is 3000L. 1.2. Application Diagram for Low Expansion Foam Fire Extinguishing System

2. Structure Features and Operating Principles 2.1 Structure Features This device consists of foam concentrate storage tank with bladder in it, foam proportioner, water feed pipe, foam concentrate outlet pipe, vent pipe, foam level indicator and drain pipe etc.. Each pipe has a ball valve (manually operated). The foam proportioner is installed on one side of the storage tank. The tank body thoroughly connects to the foam proportioner through the water feed pipe and concentrate outlet pipe. The safety relief valve and pressure gauge are installed on the water feed pipe and vent pipe separately. See figure 3. The drain pipe, water feed pipe, concentrate outlet pipe and vent pipe forms a complete cleaning circuit which can clean the storage tank body, outlet pipe and foam proportioner completely with water so as to clean away dirt and foreign substances from tank body and pipes. The safety relief valve on the device opens to release pressure when the pressure inside the storage tank exceeds 1.05 ~ 1.1 times max. operating pressure. When the pressure inside the storage tank drops to normal operating pressure, it closes for protecting the storage tank. 2.2 Operating Principles This device is a horizontal bladder type. A high strength rubber bladder contained inside the storage tank separates the foam concentrate and water completely. Its working principle is that the pressurized water displaces equivalent foam concentrate (see figure 3). The device offers foam concentrate in a certain proportion (3% or 6%) every time when used. The residue foam concentrate can be continually used after fire so that the foam concentrate can be saved furthest to reduce the fire extinguishing cost.

Page 5: PHYM Low Expansion Foam FiFre Extinguishing System€¦ · as “the device”) is designed for use in fixed foam fire extinguishing systems. It is mainly used at places where low

When the system works, the storage tank fills with water to displace foam concentrate into the foam proportioner and mixes it with water in a certain proportion so as to produce low expansion foam solution and convey it out from

the outlet of the proportioner. 3. Technical Characteristics Table 1: main performance and parameters Flow rate of foam solution(L/s) 4~32、16~64、24~80 16~24; 24~80

Repeat 5.1.1 or 5.1.2 to fill foam concentrate so that the device is to be in standby state. 6. Maintenance 6.1 The maintenance and managerial personnel shall understand the working principles, performance and operating requirements of the low expansion foam fire extinguishing system. 6.2 The maintenance and the management for the device shall be conducted according to relative stipulations of GB50281-98, Code for Engineering and Acceptance Check for Foam Fire Extinguishing System. 6.3 The device shall be checked periodically and made notes for proper operation. 6.4 The device together with system shall be run once every 2 years. All valves, pipes and accessories shall be checked in good order. 6.5 Safety valve on the device shall be checked once every year. 6.6 Pressure gauge, valves, pipes and accessories on the device shall have external appearance inspection each quarter. 6.7 Valves, such as, valve 1, valve 3, valve 4, valve 5 and valve 6 shall have opening and closing tests periodically (at least once each month) to prevent from sticking or self-locking. 6.8 Clean the storage tank and pipeline shall be thoroughly cleaned with water after use. The surface shall have a touch-up painting for corrosion resistance if necessary. 6.9 Screw off the end cap at the bottom of the device to clean the foam concentrate pipe completely. 6.10 If it is necessary to replace prolonged stored foam concentrate, open valve 4, valve 8 and valve 6 to empty it completely, then close them again. Repeat 5.1 for filling. 6.11 If it is necessary to display the foam concentrate level, open valve 2, valve 5 and valve 6 to empty water from the tank, and then close these valves. Open valve 4 and valve 7 to display the level of foam concentrate. If the foam concentrate level is 80% lower than the capacity of the bladder or less than design storage capacity, repeat item 5.1 to fill foam concentrate. 6.12 Regular sampling check for the foam concentrate shall be conducted according to manufacturer’s requirements. 6.13 The foam storage tank shall avoid direct sunshine and be stored at places where temperature variation is small. 7. Faults Analysis and Elimination 7.1 Water can not be filled into the storage tank: check valve 2, valve 5 and valve 8 to be opened or not (if water is filled from lower filling inlet, the valve 6 shall be opened).

Page 13: PHYM Low Expansion Foam FiFre Extinguishing System€¦ · as “the device”) is designed for use in fixed foam fire extinguishing systems. It is mainly used at places where low

7.2 Foam solution cannot be filled into the bladder: check valve 4 to be opened or not, and open valve 8 slightly to empty air. If foam solution spills out, close valve 8 (if water is filled from the lower filling inlet, the valve 6 shall be opened). 7.3 Water goes out brokenly from valve 2 after venting air: when filling water or concentrate into the storage tank, the bladder may block the vent valve of the tank. Open valve 5 and valve 6 to drain some tank water, and then close. Open valve 1 to inlet water. If water can flow out continuously, it shows that the valve 2 is normal. 7.4 Foam concentrate is drained out along with water when draining water to display the concentrate level: the bladder inside the storage tank may be aging. Replace the old bladder or maintain it by professional maintenance personnel or supplier (note: the bladder shall have a life of at least 5 years). 7.5 Foam concentrate can not be output freely: check valve 1 and valve 3 to be opened or not. Check air or water is vented from valve 2 or not. Vent air first, and then water before close. 7.6 Proportioning rate of the foam solution is smaller: check valve 3 to be opened completely or not. 8. Cautions 8.1 Lifting lugs welded on the foam proportioning device are used for lifting during transportation and installation. Piping or other fittings of the device shall not be used as lifting lugs. Any hit or damage when lifting shall be forbidden in order to avoid any displacement of spare parts or leakage. 8.2 Check all connecting pipes and flanges to be firmly connected or not, and all valves to be in closed standby state before the device is put into operation. 8.3 The foam concentrate shall be filtered when filling. Adopt the same type foam concentrate produced by the same manufacturer. Mixing with water or oil or other type liquids shall be forbidden. The type of the foam concentrate shall be acceptable for specific protected objects. 8.4 Excessive air shall be avoided to mix into the bladder when filling concentrate in order not to affect the filling capacity. 8.5 Read the instruction manual carefully before use, and operate strictly as the requirements. 8.6 Foam concentrate shall be filled according to design quantity of the fire extinguishing system when the device is in standby state. 8.7 Notify supplier immediately if any abnormal condition occurs during the maintenance or operation. The supplier shall provide technical instructions or field service.
