Physical abuse happens when someone’s body is harmed, and emotional abuse is when someone is treated in a way that makes them feel very bad about him or herself. Here are some differences between physical and emotional abuse: Physical Abuse Emotional Abuse Hurting someone’s body. For example, hitting, punching, kicking, shoving, biting, pulling hair, choking, throwing objects at someone. Isolating someone (forcing them to be alone) or ignoring them for days. Treating someone in a sexual way when it is not appropriate. For example, an adult touching a child’s private parts or asking a child to touch the adult’s private parts; forcing a child to kiss or hug the adult if they don’t want to, or taking inappropriate pictures of a child. Making someone feel confused. Making someone feel afraid. Damaging something that belongs to someone on purpose. Acting very jealously or possessively. Making hurtful jokes about someone. Screaming and shouting at someone. Leaving nasty messages for someone, for example on Instagram or Facebook. Accusing someone of something they have not done. Treating someone like a slave. Spreading lies about someone.

When Relationships Hurt

Child abuse happens when someone that a child should be able to trust harms him or her on purpose. Physical abuse happens when someone’s body is harmed, and emotional abuse is when someone is treated in a way that makes them feel very bad about him or herself.

Here are some differences between physical and emotional abuse:

1. Every time Michael sees his older cousin, he makes jokes about the dark rings under Michael’s eyes and calls him Racoon Face.
