Be Active, All Ways!
Why celebrate Physical Education Week? Physical Education Week offers South Australian students the chance to participate in a variety of activities and learn new skills. We are most fortunate to capture the commitment and enthusiasm of numerous teachers, other professionals and volunteers, to ensure the Week appeals to and involves many local school communities. This significant event is a great cause for celebration and an opportunity for you to showcase the things your school does well and how much you value this important part of the curriculum. It’s the right time for us to stand up and be proud of the work we do and fly the flag for Health & Physical Education (Health & PE). We invite your school to participate in this event, one of the largest weeks in the South Australian school calendar that celebrates the importance of active and healthy living in the lives of South Australian children. We encourage you to join over 40,000 students, from more than 200 schools from all sectors, involving student’s families and local communities, to again ensure this week is the most significant Health & PE week of its kind in Australia. We invite you to join with us in 2016 to celebrate our theme ‘Be Active, All ways!’Physical Education Week provides an opportunity for classroom and Health & PE teachers to promote and incorporate health and wellbeing activities and events into their weekly planning. Physical Education Week is a celebration of health and wellbeing; being active, learning about how to look after ourselves and encouraging schools and their communities to think about ideas and ways of working to incorporate this into their school in a sustainable way.

Promoting PE Week at your schoolLet everyone know what PE Week is all about! Promote via your school newsletter, flyers, email communications to parents, noticeboards, and your school website.Use the #PEWeek16 hashtag and promote your activities. We encourage you to use this information to fly the flag for Health & Physical Education in your school. Use the information below as examples of what you can share to promote Physical Education Week in your school!
Physical Education Week - Celebrating the importance of Health & Physical Education – Health & PE is an essential area of the curriculum that provides real opportunities for children to learn how to lead active & healthy lives – now and in the future. It recognises and actively promotes the importance of health and physical education and physical activity for physical, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. This has been celebrated through Physical Education Week 2016.
PE Week 14-18 November, Week 5, Term 4
This year as part of our celebrations for PE Week, we are hosting (insert activities) on (insert dates). Parent helpers are welcome and would be most appreciated, however please feel free to just come along and support your child being active and having fun! Include what, when, where and who, why not include a photo, what exciting/unique activities are being undertaken?
Spend quality active time together - As a family plan some trips that are free. There are many free activities like a family walk or a game in the backyard, visiting the local park, beach or a picnic.
Walk yourself happy during PE week!As adults, we know we need 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most days. Our kids need even more! Don’t think too much about it, just do it! Even a short, brisk walk of just 10 minutes can give you an energy and mood boost. If you park the car 7-8 minutes away from school and walk the rest of the way at both drop off and pick up time, you’ll have accumulated your 30 minutes already. Have a look at Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelineswww.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/health-pubhlth-strateg-phys-act-guidelines
Help your children to find FUN things to do besides watching television - Play schoolyard games at home like hopscotch and jump rope, make instruments out of kitchen items and dance to the music you make, play some one-on-one basketball or netball. Limit the amount of TV you watch, try having a TV free day once a week with your family.
Be a positive role model for your child - Show your children how you are active by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, get off the bus one or two stops early and walk the rest of the way, go for a walk after dinner with the family.
Over 200 School communities are taking the challenge and being active this week as Physical Education Week (14 - 18 November) is put into practice by up to 40,000 school students in over 200 schools across the state. With current rates of obesity and inactivity increasing there has never been a more important time to promote the theme of ‘Be Active, All Ways’.
Why not try this? Get your students to blog what activities the school/class has participated in, link this blog in with your school newsletter and make it available to download via the school website.
Please send any school promotion (newsletters) or media information (newspaper mentions) you develop to ACHPER (SA) by #PEWeek16 hashtag or email [email protected]

environment• Everyone can increase their level of physical activity• Suitable for all of your school community - parents welcome
Lesson starters
CountdownThe teacher begins a countdown for blast off: “Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one blast off!” The children are scattered, and each makes an abrupt, jerky movement on each count. On the word “blast off,” they run in different directions until the stop signal is given.
Ponies In The StableEach child has a stable, his spot or place on the floor. This can be marked with a beanbag or a hoop. On the initial signal, children gallop lightly (like ponies) in general space. The next signal tells them to trot lightly to their stable and to continue trotting lightly in place.
AirplanesChildren pretend to be airplanes. When told to take off, they zoom with arms out, swooping, turning, and gliding. When they are commanded to land, they drop to the floor in prone position, simulating a plane at rest. To start their engines and take off, they can perform a series of push ups and move up and down while simulating engine noise.

The following information is from the ACHPER (SA) developed Play with Purpose: For Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) Teaching resource. This resource is a South Australian first that was developed to support educators in planning, delivering and assessing early childhood FMS. This resource has been designed to support educators and enable all students to refine their FMS. Photos, illustrations, and observation checklists are featured to support the development and achievement of these important skills. This resource has been funded by SACPSSA and managed by ACHPER (SA). A must for all PE teachers, and early years classroom teachers.
The following three pages highlight some of the useful information, support materials, activities and games included in the resource.
Stages of FMS: Years 1– 4It can’t be assumed that young people will start school with the FMS experience indicated in the Early Years outline on the preceding page. While a two handed catch, kick, the basics of running with coordination and control, and jumping would necessarily be introduced in the Foundation/Reception Year, Year1-2 will see those skills progressively developed through play with purpose. The following schedule outlines a typical focus during Year 1.
Year 1Should have mastered* the following FMS: • Run and kick a stationary ball with preferred leg • Receive a rolling ball • Receive a bouncing ball • Hopping (both legs) • Balance on one leg (left and right leg) Should be able to attempt the following FMS: • Run avoiding objects and collisions (dodge) • Skip forward • Throw a ball with direction and force with preferred hand• Kick a rolling ball with direction and force with preferred leg • Overhead throw with two hands • Bounce and catch a ball with two hands • Leap • Two handed catch • Vertical jump ( jump up) • Jump and land (off one foot and two feet) • Trapping a rolling ball with preferred and non-preferred feet • Dribbling a ball with preferred and non-preferred feet • One handed catch with preferred and non preferred hand

Select developmentally appropriate activitiesYoung people grow and develop at different rates. If activities are too easy players will become bored and learning progress may falter. If activities are too hard players will become anxious and learning progress may falter. The concept that explains the balance between activity challenge and motivation to participate is optimal challenge (Csikszentmihalyi & Nakamura, 2002), the zone where development will occur as the challenge is believed to be achievable. Modifying games to meet the development needs of players can be considered through the CHANGE IT formula (Schembri, 2005). Change:
Coaching (teaching) style: e.g. group work, individual practice tasks, direct instruction, etc.
How games are scored
Area (dimensions) of play space
Number of players
Game rules
Equipment
Inclusion: e.g. single gender groupings, catering for special needs, ability grouping, etc.
Time (duration) of the game, or time an individual player (or team) is allowed to keep possession
Movement Exploration activity: Seated shot put INSTRUCTIONS: • Set up a play space similar to Kicking Javelin. A chair or stool is placed in the throwing circle. • Sitting on the chair, players take it in turn to two-handed ‘chest pass’ (throw from the chest) the
ball into the play space. • Where the ball lands is where it scores.
CHANGE IT: • Type, shape or size of the ball. • Dimensions of the scoring zone. • Players use a two handed over-head throw. • Throw the ball over-hand and use a vortex instead of a ball.
FOCUS IT:• Why push your hands forward toward where you want the ball to go? • Release the ball in an upward and forward direction if throwing for distance.
Physical Education Week | 14 - 18 November 2016 21
Manipulative activity: Wishing wellINSTRUCTIONS: • Create a throwing line, and in front of the throwing line place a number of crates with the
open end facing up.
• Players aim to throw their ‘coins’ (beanbags) into the wishing well (the crate). • If the player gets the coin into the wishing well they move the well back (further from the
line) a step.
CHANGE IT: • Two handed throws or one handed underarm throws. • Replace the beanbag with a ball, and the aim is to get the ball to bounce once and then land
in the ‘wishing well’.
FOCUS IT: • How do you get your body balanced before you throw? • Throw the ball up and forward so that it loops towards the ‘wishing well’.

The Importance of the Health and Physical Education learning area in schools
This Position Statement has been developed in ACHPER’s role as the leading professional association for the purpose of contributing to discourse on the importance of the HPE learning area in schools. It is part of ACHPER’s responsibility to present its position for the benefit of members as well as for productive, ongoing and future partnerships.
ACHPER’s positions are based on the belief that an educated nation, comprising active and healthy young people, is the best investment we can make in the future and an understanding that school is a very significant setting for children’s intellectual, physical, social and emotional development. The assertions of this position statement have strong foundations in both research related to children and adolescents and in current curriculum.
The position of ACHPER toward the Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area in Australian schools is briefly summarised as:• ACHPER recognises HPE as a unique and essential learning area focused on educative purposes
[Australian Curriculum – Health and Physical Education (AC-HPE), 2014].
• ACHPER asserts that HPE is an entitlement for all young people in Australian schools.
• ACHPER believes the purpose of the HPE learning area is to provide ongoing, developmentally appropriate and explicit learning about health and movement (AC-HPE, 2014).
• ACHPER concurs with curriculum priorities that provide opportunities for students to:
- acquire the knowledge, skills and dispositions to advocate for and positively influence their own and others health and wellbeing; and
- acquire movement skills, concepts and strategies to confidently, competently and creatively participate in a range of physical activities (AC-HPE, 2014).
• ACHPER subscribes to a strengths-based approach in Health and Physical Education, wherein teachers take account of the range of their students’ current levels of learning, abilities, strengths, goals and interests (AC-HPE, 2014), and accommodate diversity by providing flexible groupings, multiple means of demonstrating knowledge and skills, and ongoing assessment.

A quality health and physical education (HPE) program will enable students to:• Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to make decisions and take
action that leads to a healthy and physically active lifestyle for themselves and the community in which they live.
It takes a quality health and physical education professional to provide:• A developmentally appropriate and meaningful program that enhances the physical, • cognitive, and affective development of all students• Inclusive instruction that maximises engagement by all students in class activities• Ongoing assessment and feedback to all students that is used to guide student
learning• A program that supports lifelong learning toward leading a healthy and physically
active life
How much time does your school allocate to HPE?If your physical education program does not meet the recommended time mandate, or is under threat from the crowded curriculum remind your peers that:• Evidence suggests that time in physical education and physical activity* may actually
improve academic learning. Research conducted has found no negative effect on academic performance when physical education and physical activity time has been increased during the school day.
• A major barrier to increasing physical education time in schools is the perception that time spent in activities such as physical education, physical activity and recess will undermine academic learning but nothing could be further from the truth.
*Physical education and physical activity ARE NOT the same but there is evidence that when classroom teachers use activity breaks this can result in an improvement in cognitive function and classroom behaviour.

ACHPER (SA) Minimum Time Recommendations for Physical and Sport Education
ACHPER (SA) recommends: • A strengths-based approach to H&PE curriculum that acknowledges that most students come
to the learning area feeling positive about their health and their participation in physical activity (ACARA, 2012)
• That all schools have access to qualified H&PE specialist teachers. • That consistent with the Melbourne Declaration (2008) H&PE be positioned as an essential
component of the curriculum for students within the compulsory ages of schooling (R-10); with physical education occurring weekly (ACARA, 2012).
• The reintroduction of “daily physical education” for all early years and primary school settings because of the vital role played by physical activity in healthy brain and body development (Ratey, 2008).
• The reaffirmation of the importance of “active schools” (Fox, 1996; Pill, 2006) where schools become sites that act to enhance daily physical activity accumulation.
• That eighty hours H&PE in curriculum time per year (ACARA, 2012) is the minimum time entitlement for H&PE for students within the compulsory age of schooling, and that 100 minutes per week is the minimum expectation for physical education (Government of South Australia, 1996)
Questions to ask about your school1. Has our school developed an up to date written Health and Physical Education policy?2. Do we currently meet or surpass the minimum time mandates for Sport & Physical Education?3. Do we have a planned and sequential program that addresses key content descriptors and
elaborations of AusVELS?4. Does our HPE program provide learning experiences that are inclusive of all students and are
safe, enjoyable and promote an active and healthy lifestyle?5. Does our HPE program include ongoing, authentic assessment as an integrated part of
learning?
If you answered No or Maybe to any of these questions and would like support in further developing your program, please contact the Professional Learning Team at ACHPER (SA) Branch.

Surf Education Program
This activity would be especially appropriate for:• Year 3, 4 & 5 students• Schools wishing to provide children with the
opportunity to participate in a Open Water Safety program at a beach centre.
The DECD Swimming and Aquatics Unit has approved hours, outside of the yearly allowance, for Physical Education Week. Registration for the Surf Program will give students the opportunity to experience a variety of activities including surfboard paddling, beach skills, surf awareness and sun safety.
Swimming and aquatic consent forms for every participant need to be taken to each venue. If any student requires increased supervision while in the water due to an illness or disability (ie severe asthma, epilepsy, severe physical disability) the Surf Program Instructor in charge should be notified prior to the school attending on the day so that additional instructors can be provided.
Qualified instructors approved by DECD and Surf Life Saving SA will supervise the activities.
