The act of leaving a country to start your own. Secession is the opposite of annexation.

Where are we heading?
Currently, this is a bridge unit – it does not really break away from what we covered during the end of the TX Revolution, but is key to understand how we became part of the USA.We are first going to examine how TX establishes itself as a country, and then examine the relationship of Native Americans and TexiansThe next unit will cover annexation of Texas and the Civil War.
Presidency of Sam Houston• Led us to victory at San Jacinto – people knew
who he was and liked him for his military heroism• First freely elected president
– We also decided in the same election that we want to be a part of the USA [annexation]
• Wanted annexation for TX– Unable to get TX annexed– Fear of civil war keeps TX out
• Adding another slave state would upset the balance
• Kept the State of Texas in debt– Cost of war put TX in $1M of debt
• Printed Star Money to run the government– Added more debt to government, some people
would not accept it as payment because they didn’t trust the government would pay them back
– Failed to solve debt problem
Election of 1838
• TX constitution puts limits for presidents at 2 years, then 3 years
• Houston’s Vice-President, Mirabeau Lamar runs for president
• Lamar and Houston thought very differently about what was best for Texas’ future

The New President, Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar
• The second elected president of Texas
• Joined the Texian militia during the Revolution– Made a courageous rescue of two
men during the Battle of San Jacinto that made him very famous
• People liked him and respected him for his military career
• He easily won the election – Houston did not run [term was up]
Relations with Mexico• Lamar was not successful in improving
relationships with Mexico– He didn’t care about peace
• In 1840 he sent the Texan navy to assist rebels in the Yucatan of Mexico– Enemy of your enemy is your friend
• Wanted to expand Texas into New Mexico– Treaty of Velasco that ended the war gave
this land to Mexico– Texan congress refused to give Lamar
permission to move into New Mexico because they knew it would start war

Santa Fe Expedition, 1841• Lamar’s idea of invading New Mexico was shot
down by congress but he still thought it was a good idea
• Lamar sent General McLeod and 270 men to Santa Fe to establish trade and convince residents that they should join Texas– Men traveled 1,300 miles across Comanche territory
• When in Santa Fe people refused to join Texas• Without supplies to return home, and strongly
outnumbered, they surrendered to Mexican troops– Men were marched back to Perote, Mexico and kept
in prison • Lamar wasted money and increased tensions
with Mexico with this act

A New Capital
• Lamar moved the capital of Texas from Houston to a small community along the Colorado River, about 100 miles north of San Antonio
• He felt the capital of Texas should be more centrally located
Austin, Texas
• This new capital was named Austin, in honor of Stephen F. Austin
Annexation with USA
• Lamar sets the bold traditions for Texians– “Rebel” spirit
• Unlike Houston Lamar DID NOT want annexation with the USA
• Knows that USA is probably not interested until they sort out their slavery issue
• Thought that we could improve relations with European countries and have them recognize our Republic of Texas as a “real country”
We don’t need the USA! We Texans are true rebels! We’ll do what we want when

Education• Lamar is best known for his
contributions to education in Texas• In Texas’ declaration of independence
they cite the failure of Mexico to provide schools as a great injustice
• Lamar believed that if we want to have a strong government we need to have intelligent people– Foolish voters foolish leaders
• Lamar convinces congress to set aside land for schools– 3 leagues for each county to create
schools– 220,000 acres for universities
