Pick Up & Drop Off Zone Rostrevor College Junior Campus

Rostrevor College Pick Up & Drop Off Zone | 2

What is a Pick Up and Drop Off Zone? This is a designated area that is usually located near pedestrian exit gates on the school side for drivers to pick up children or drop them off. Rostrevor College Junior Campus exit gates are situated directly adjacent to the school crossing on Kintyre Road. The Pick Up and Drop Off Zone/Undercover Area is located the required 10 metres from the crossing area to the East along Kintyre Road.

What does a Pick Up and Drop Off Zone look like?It can be located as an indented bay or along the school’s kerb side. A Red, Black and White sign will clearly identify the designated zone. Rostrevor College Junior Campus has this area clearly defined by the correct signs and an indented bay that covers some 25 metres for the drop off and collection of children.

How does it work?• During school “Start and Finish” times, this

area is for dropping and picking up of students only and NOT for parking for longer periods.

• NO PARKING signs apply at the Pick Up and Drop Off Zone.

• The Driver of a vehicle must not stop in a NO PARKING area, unless stopping for the immediate purpose of picking up or dropping off passengers or goods. The Driver must remain with the vehicle and take no more than 2 Minutes.

• If you are the first Driver in the line, please pull up to the start of the pick-up line, enabling others to draw in behind your vehicle.

• If the Driver needs to leave the vehicle or your child is not waiting in the Pick Up and Drop Off Zone, the Driver should park in the allocated car park adjacent to Womma Oval on Kintyre Road.

Hints for Drivers parking around schools: • Ensure your children enter via the safety

door. This is the door on the left-hand side next to the kerb and away from the traffic.

• Slow down near schools and parked cars as there is a greater chance that a child could run out from between parked cars.

• It is illegal to ‘double park’ by stopping next to another car already parked near the kerb. Double parking restricts access for other traffic and can block sight lines for children on the side of the road.

How you can help:• Reinforce with your son that he should wait

on the footpath or the undercover area within the Pick Up and Drop Off Zone and enter the vehicle when the vehicle is at a complete stop.

• If someone else picks up your son, please explain the Pick Up and Drop Off Zone procedure to them.

• Talk to your son about what to do if you are not there – boys should report to the staff member on duty if they have concerns

• Children take notice of what we do as adults, so please let us all set a good example to the boys by behaving safely – obey the parking signs and restrictions around the College

• Consider the safety of other children as well as your own

Available spacesParking is available along both sides of Kintyre Road (up to the Crossing area). There is access to one Disabled Parking space on the Northern side of the road.

The Parking Area for Staff of the Junior Campus and Parents/Caregivers/Family members is the area opposite the Entrance/Exit gate on Kintyre Road (adjacent to the Yertabirriti Womma – Cricket Oval).

This parking area can be accessed from either the East or West along Kintyre Road. When entering the car-park, Drivers should KEEP LEFT (stay left of the tree in the middle of the drive way) and the same applies upon exiting.

There are no lines marked in the car park however it is required that all Drivers park in a safe manner that is considerate of others. Drivers MUST NOT park behind other vehicles or block off access or exit points for others.

Parking

Near School CrossingsParking is generally banned at school or other pedestrian crossings for 20 metres before and 10 metres after the crossing unless signs indicate otherwise.

It is vital that Drivers do not park near crossings (on the area marked with yellow lines) as it can make it harder to see children and other pedestrians using the crossing.

The Continuous Yellow LineA continuous yellow line marked on the edge of the road has the same meaning as a no stopping zone. There is no parking at any time if there is a yellow line.

Emu Crossing

The EMU CrossingRostrevor College Junior Campus has what is known as an Emu Crossing. An Emu Crossing has a red or orange “CHILDREN CROSSING” flag displayed on red and white striped posts. When the flags are displayed Drivers must give way to all pedestrians crossing or about to cross the road. Emu Crossings are located within School Zones which have a speed limit of 25 km/h when children are on the road or the footpath. If the “CHILDREN CROSSING” flags are not up, the 25 km/h school zone speed limit applies if there are children present.

5 Helpful hints for School Zones

Allow enough time to drop off or collect your son without having to rush

Always observe the parking signs and speed limits

Talk about traffic signs and lights with your son, where it is safe to get out of the car and cross the road

Teach your son to look out for your arrival but not run to get to the car

You can always park a few streets away and walk your boy back to the car – great exercise and boys love to talk when they walk!
