VIII.VIII. Lessons LearnedLessons Learnedp. 1p. 1

Budgeting Many smaller activities (e.g., Screenplay

Contest, Year 1 Speakers DVDs) are long-term investments, either monetary or “institutional promotion” in nature

Our principal effort at income generation in Year 2 is the Workshops; we are finding that our principal income generation will probably be for the University at large (i.e., tuition generation) rather than for Picture This:

VIII.VIII. Lessons LearnedLessons Learnedp. 2p. 2

The Community: We have begun to educate the Film Community about

Full-Scale Workshops—this will clearly take some time. . . BUT we do believe that this process will be worth it—introducing a new level of rigor to film education in the region

Area Arts Organizations are enthusiastic—but cautious, due to budget woes

Confusion between new CSU initiatives (e.g., School of Communication) and Picture This entity—both good and bad; relationships need greater formalization

Page 23: Picture This: The Filmmakers Program @ Cleveland State University Kimberly A. Neuendorf, Ph.D., Austin Allen, Ph.D. John Ban, M.A. School of Communication

VIII. Lessons Learnedp. 3

The University: Operating an innovative program within a large

bureaucracy has special challenges (e.g., promotions, legal, budget records)—perhaps this could be taken into account when evaluating schedule deviations

Some administrators view PIF grants as “personal” faculty grants, and resist giving in-kind resources (rationale—if they assist one faculty member, they must assist all); not all PIFs are of personal benefit to faculty, and CSU should recognize this (via course releases, “credit” for extraordinary service or teaching, etc.)

Page 24: Picture This: The Filmmakers Program @ Cleveland State University Kimberly A. Neuendorf, Ph.D., Austin Allen, Ph.D. John Ban, M.A. School of Communication

IX.IX. Looking Forward—Year 3Looking Forward—Year 3p. 1p. 1

From Year 2--another cycle for Workshops/Short Film Production and Short Screenplay Competition—New Workshops to have distinct CSU multidisciplinary flavor, serve as “incubators” for cross-departmental collaboration

Page 25: Picture This: The Filmmakers Program @ Cleveland State University Kimberly A. Neuendorf, Ph.D., Austin Allen, Ph.D. John Ban, M.A. School of Communication

IX.IX. Looking Forward—Year 3Looking Forward—Year 3p. 2p. 2

External partners have sought out Picture This for potential Year 3 projects— Partner with Cleveland Film Society on “Local Heroes”

series during Cleveland International Film Festival—with Workshops to generate income

Further develop partnership with Greater Cleveland Film Commission for “Celebrity Fundraisers for Film Scholarships,” capitalizing on film industry professionals visiting on scouting or other trips to Cleveland

Page 26: Picture This: The Filmmakers Program @ Cleveland State University Kimberly A. Neuendorf, Ph.D., Austin Allen, Ph.D. John Ban, M.A. School of Communication

IX.IX. Looking Forward—Year 3Looking Forward—Year 3p. 3p. 3

Other potential partnerships in the works: Produce pilot episodes of TV/Cable program “Cool

Cleveland Cinema” in conjunction with Cleveland Cinematheque, Cool Cleveland Arts Initiative, other partners

Develop Formal P.A. (Production Assistant) Certification with Greater Cleveland Film Commission + Independent Pictures or Tri-C

Coordination of key activities—e.g., a “Local Hero” film director who conducts a Workshop in conjunction with the Cleveland International Film Festival might also appear on ”Cool Cleveland Cinema” and participate in a “Celebrity Scholarship” fundraiser with the Film Commission

Page 27: Picture This: The Filmmakers Program @ Cleveland State University Kimberly A. Neuendorf, Ph.D., Austin Allen, Ph.D. John Ban, M.A. School of Communication

IX. Looking Forward—Year 3p. 4

And at CSU: Organize CSU student chapter of U.F.V.A. (University

Film & Video Association) and/or S.C.M.S. (Society for Cinema and Media Studies)—with such activities as Cleveland Regional Student Film Contest

Develop Distance Learning modules with Education (particular emphasis on Online Learning)

Work with Development to identify sources of underwriting for annual cycle of Short Screenplay Competition and Short Film Production
