Beautiful century homes abound in Port Perry bringing a unique

sense of Victorian era charm to the historic downtown

• Ebbles/Carnegie House: Built by Hubert L. Ebbles in 1869 on

Cochrane Street, still in the Carnegie family for the past over

80 years.

• The Currie Residence: Prestigious house built at Queen and Ella

Street in 1873.

• The Purdy Residence: Built in 1873 on the west side of Simcoe Street

• Joseph Bigelow Residence: Port Perry’s largest and fi nest example

of Italianate architecture was built on Cochrane Street in 1876.

• Courtice/Jeffrey Residence: Also on Cochrane Street this fi ne

century home was built in 1883.

• Adams/Hutcheson Residence: Built about 1871 on Cochrane St.

• Lockerby House was built by Major Thomas C. Forman in 1885 at

the corner of Queen and Caleb Streets.

• The Dr. Graham House: Built on Queens Street by local

veterinarian in 1885.

• The Burnham House: On Perry Street overlooking Lake Scugog to

the east, the house was built in 1878.

Historic Architecture:A Living Heritage

Truth or Fiction? The Lake Scugog Sea MonsterOne afternoon in May 1881, Daniel Ireland, Wm. Harper and P. Brown of

Port Perry were shooting at Beaver Meadow Creek along the shores of

Lake Scugog when they suddenly heard a loud splashing. Heading off

to investigate, they were soon confronted by a sea-monster of gigantic

dimensions that they estimated to be about 20’ long with large head,

eyes as big a saucers, a body as big around as a flower barrel and

weighing over 500 lbs. Mr. Ireland reportedly aimed his gun at the beast

and fired four shots but to no effect, and the monster submerged in the

water– never to be seen again. Truth or too much tipple? You decide.
