Piecefully Yours - Page 1 PIECEFULLY YOURS Bayberry Quilters of Cape cod Volume XXX Issue 3 March 2012 PIECE FROM THE TOP Dear Quilting Friends, We really don’t want to jinx our winter by saying this, but with all the sunny blue sky days we’ve had since December, we’re calling this Cape Cod season Florida with Mittens. Those of you now reading this under the shade of palm trees in some warm part of the country have escaped snow shoveling, but so have we hearty Old Salts. We’re so excited to tell you that the idea of selling note cards has expanded to include cards made from photos of a number of last summer’s National Seashore Challenge Quilts. Diane McGuire will get permission from each member whose quilt will become a card, and later in the spring we plan to make available at least one series of five different cards with three to four additional series to be forthcoming. Each card will have the quilt maker’s name and Bayberry Quilters of Cape Cod on the back, and they will sell in sets of five. The 2011 raffle quilt cards will still be available, and a portion of all proceeds will be used to donate books on quilting to libraries all over the Cape. We have tried to make new members welcome in a number of ways, but as our guild now approaches 290 members it becomes harder to reach out personally to each new member. We’d like to start to pair up each new member with an experienced one, hopefully living in the same town - sort of a casual Bayberry buddy system. This would be as simple as meeting at the tea and exchanging phone numbers, and the new member would have her buddy to answer questions and perhaps invite her to go to a quilt-in or quilt bank for the first time. If you think you would like to be a buddy, please contact Carol Salerno in the next weeks. We often have 35 to 40 new members each year, and even if you are a one- or two-year member, you might like doing this. Preview of Coming Attractions: Turn to Page 8 to see the lineup of teachers the 2013 Program Chairs have selected to come to Bayberry. It’s not too early to start planning your choice of workshops. The Raffle Quilt for 2013 is well underway. Diane McGuire has come up with a quilt design depicting different size blocks which will then be filled in with Cape Cod scenes. Many members have taken on the responsibility of filling these blocks and there are only two left that need doing. Talk to Diane and your fellow members to see if this is something you would like to do. The deadline for submitting your finished block to Diane is June 15th. This will allow time for the quilt to be assembled, quilted and ready for showing at the fall/winter fairs and festivals. Many congratulations to the Director and Office Manager of Brewster Council on Aging who won our 2011 raffle quilt “Our Cape Cod” which was re-raffled by the Lower Cape Outreach Council when our last summer winner donated it to them for their own fundraiser. The quilt will hang at the Brewster COA for all to see and enjoy! Happy Stitches as we sew for the show, Carol Salerno, President Christine White, Vice President

PIECE FROM THE TOP

Dear Quilting Friends, We really don’t want to jinx our winter by saying this, but with all the sunny blue sky days we’ve had since December, we’re calling this Cape Cod season Florida with Mittens. Those of you now reading this under the shade of palm trees in some warm part of the country have escaped snow shoveling, but so have we hearty Old Salts. OCTOBER 2012 - Ann Lainhart

We close out the year with a fantastic piecing workshop by Bayberry’s own Ann Lainhart. She is a contemporary traditionalist when it comes to quilting. Much of her work is based on traditional quilt blocks — such as Card Trick, Mariner’s Compass, and Eight-Pointed Star. By using modern cottons, hand-dyed fabrics, border prints, and fussy-cutting, her work has a very contemporary feel.

Lecture: October 23 - Working with Color Families Lecture: October 24 - Fussy-Cutting Trunk Show

Two-Day Workshop: October 25 and 26 - Color Shift Bargello

This is an interesting technique that may end up being a lifetime favorite for you. Ann’s bargello designs are based on needlepoint work from the Middle Ages; but in her color-shift bargello, she makes use of all the marvelous new designs being used in modern cottons, including batiks and metallics. www.quiltedgallery.com

31st Annual Quilt Show August 2, 3, and 4, 2012

The Quilt Show will be here before you know it and we should all be gearing up to prepare ourselves for another great show. The Show Committee is working hard to make sure this happens. The 2012 Blue and White Raffle Quilt was on display at the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School Craft Fair last fall where a goodly number of tickets were sold. We will resume marketing the raffle quilt in April and are looking for members to volunteer their time to sit at a number of different venues to sell tickets. Contact Carol Salerno or Leslie Bird for further information and details. Please don't forget to get your raffle tickets from Leslie Bird if you haven't done so yet. Remember, the sale of these tickets help to fund scholarships and toolships for students at the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. The more tickets we sell, the more funds we have to disburse to help these students in their chosen careers. We are happy to report that all positions have been filled on the Show Committee. Thank you to Marilyn Swenson for stepping forward to fill the Sign position, Mickie Heath for assisting Mary Ann Hamshire and Shirley Anderson for taking over Publicity Mailings. We'd like to welcome and thank all the new committee members for volunteering to help us with new ideas and energy to improve our Quilt Show. At our meeting in February, Marian Cawley, Vendor Chair, informed us that 60% of last year’s vendors are returning, and there is a waiting list of vendors who would like to do our show. We will need lots of great things for the Bayberry Boutique; with that in mind, it is not too early to start thinking about making something. If you need ideas for a contribution contact Sheila Garran, our Boutique Chairman. Please keep in mind we will need volunteers for various positions during the show. Sign-up sheets will be at our monthly meetings in the near future. If you have any questions or ideas you'd like to offer please contact either Claude Danner or Linda Dobbins.

Block of the Month

The January block of the month with the red and white Jacob's Ladder was a delight with 14 BOMs

which were won by Paula Tuaño. For February we had a heart: red, of course, on a white background. It's on the website and is easy to make. The method of making half-square triangles may be new to some but will be easy for all. The March BOM will be posted shortly. Thanks for the great participation.

June Calender Block of the Month

Leslie Bird has an envelope with two books of six tickets for each member either to buy for herself or family members, sell to others,

or return with a $10 donation to our Scholarship/Toolships Fund which the annual raffle quilt supports. This is one of the few responsibilities each member has that comes with Bayberry membership. Please seek Leslie out at either of the guild meetings or monthly quilt in to take your envelope. Starting in April when more people return to the Cape, Carol Salerno will be asking members to spend two hours with a friend at a local event, library, or farmers' market to sell tickets for the raffle quilt. The portable stand, the quilt, and one tote holding tickets, money, and small signs make it easy and fun to volunteer on the date of your choice. Last June, a member hung the quilt on the front porch of her cottage which is on the way to the beach. She sat there drinking iced tea in the shade and ran out of tickets to sell. The are two other Raffle Prizes: a Bernina Sewing Machine donated by Ann’s Fabrics of Canton, MA and a basket full of red and white strips and other red and white goodies donated by Bayberry Members. When donating strips, please cut them in the following length: 6” wide by 44” long. Ruth Wilcox will then cut them into jelly roll size and add to the basket along with the other red and white items. So, go on a treasure hunt in your stash, closets, attics, basements, etc. and see what you can come up with for a donation.

Quilt Registration for Bayberry’s 31st Annual Quilt Show

The Bayberry Quilt Show is only as good as the quilts that are entered. Help make it a success by entering your wonderful quilts. All quilts entered in the show will need a Registration Form. If you have any questions about the form, please feel free to call or email me. Please fill in all areas that apply to your quilt. For example: if the quilt is a Golden Stork UFO, check that off, as well as information in the Categories and Techniques sections. Any UFO Forms received in February also need this form. Each Featured and Memoriam quilt must also be registered. Each quilt entered MUST have its own form. Please photocopy the form on Page 5 to use for all your quilts. Include a PICTURE of your quilt with the form. Registration Deadline is May 1, 2011. However, the forms will be accepted at any time up to May 1st. When the forms come early, it makes my job easier. Look around, gather up your quilts, fill in the blanks, and send along your form, with a photo, to me as soon as possible. Any questions? Call or email me.

PHOTOS NEEDED FOR ALL QUILTS

The Show Chair and Curators would like a photo of each quilt you enter for exhibit at this year’s quilt show. The quilt does not have to be quilted, so if you only have the top done by May 1st, take a picture of it to include with your Registration Form. Take a picture before you send it to your quilter. I know this can be an inconvenience, but it

contributes so much to the planning, arrangement, and wonderful display at the show. For those of you who are unable to get your quilt photographed, please bring it to a monthly meeting or one of the Quilt-Ins before the May 1st deadline. Someone will be available to take a photo of your quilt. The quilt photograph is essential to planning how the quilts will look at the show since color, theme and size determine the placement of the quilts when they are hung. They are also instrumental in helping the Curator and her assistants hang the quilts once you drop them off at the Tech School.

Ellie Held Registration Chair

"OUR CAPE COD" will soon hang at the Brewster Council on Aging. The Director and Office Manager bought $100 worth of raffle tickets (out of their own pockets) from Bayberry last year and were extremely sad that they didn't win the quilt for the COA.

When they found out it was at The Hope Chest in Orleans and was again being raffled off, they bought another $110 worth of tickets out of their own pockets. When they found out they won the quilt they were ecstatic. Everyone was jumping up and down with joy. Even though they used their own money to purchase the winning ticket, the quilt will hang at the COA so everyone can come and visit it.

International Quilt Festival Houston, TX—November 2011

The Houston International Quilt Show is serious business. Major companies sponsor awards with monetary prizes ranging from $300 up to $10,000, with the winning entries judged by an international team of experts. And, if you’re lucky enough to win the Viewer’s Choice Award, you will go home with $500. Can we get any more serious than this? The quilters who entered this competition worked extremely hard to win these prizes. Some of the winners spent up to four years or more working on these winning quilts. These are not UFO’s – they are a journey where the quilter takes her/his first step with an idea and then expands on it to create a masterpiece. And what masterpieces! At the end of the first day, I went back to my hotel with lockjaw, mainly because my jaw dropped so much each and every time I looked at the workmanship and detail on these award-winning quilts. This is not to say that some of our Bayberry Quilters don’t fall into this category, but to see so many amazing quilts in one venue is mind boggling! There were more than 30 categories culminating in over 1,000 quilts on display. Entries came from Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea, and needless to say, the United States. There were Challenge Quilts, Quilts to Celebrate Spring, Doll Beds and Their Quilts, Texas Guilds’ Award Winning Traditional Quilts 2011, Alice’s Odyssey: Alice in Wonderland Quilts, healing quilts such as Cancer Coats, the Briscoe Center’s Reflections on 9/11 Quilt Collection, just to name a few, plus Text on Textiles 2011 with entries from Bayberry’s Sandy Gregg and Priscilla Smith. A quirky exhibit called “In Celebration of the Doll” showcased three-dimensional figures with titles such as ‘Fools Read, Too’, ‘Alejandro the Beaded Blowfish’, ‘Elspeth the Fortune Teller’, ‘Manuela the Money Lender’, just to name a few. The titles represented what the dolls portrayed. My favorite was ‘Leo was Allergic to Dogs’; this doll portrayed a man out for a stroll with an alligator on a leash. Leo was smartly dressed in a tweed cap, plaid blazer, rust colored turtleneck sweater, gold medallion hanging on his chest and brown wool trousers with shoes to match his turtleneck. The alligator strolled in front of Leo without a care in the world. There were many hands on activities for us quilters, such as ‘Make It University’ where participants were chosen by a lottery to participate in an hour long class, ‘Open Studios” where free motion stitching was demonstrated, small projects made, an opportunity to dye and paint fabric, and more. There was also a ‘Trading Post’ where you could trade one of your own works for someone else’s. While there was much to see and do, and you were overwhelmed by the number of quilts, the number of vendors and the sheer numbers of people, quilters always found time to chat with complete strangers when purchasing a piece of fabric, a quilting tool or that newly coveted sewing machine. If you’ve never been to Houston, grab your walking shoes, your wallet and leave your husband at home. However, if you decide to bring him, as I did for a day, there’s a ‘Husband’s Lounge’ complete with comfy chairs and a big screen television. If you want to immerse yourself in quilts, take a trip to Houston. The show is open for four days and that is still not enough time to see everything. However, you can pick and choose what you want to view from the program booklet. A thoroughly enjoyable experience which I hope to repeat in the future.

National Seashore Challenge 2011

The National Seashore Challenge quilts had a successful showing at Tumbleweeds during the month of January. They have been safely packed away for future showings. We have been asked to have them featured at the Herring Run Quilt Show in September 2012. In the meantime, if any one knows of a museum, school, library or anywhere else that would be safe to show the quilts, please let me know. My plan is to give them back at the October 2012 meetings. They make a wonderful collection and you should all be proud of yourselves.

Mistake-Proof Trimming Method: When you want to trim the batting, but not the backing on a quilted piece, slip the edge of your Rotary Cutting Mat between the backing and batting before you begin. This will prevent you from inadvertently cutting into the backing fabric.

See It to Believe It: To decide if your quilting thread contrasts or blends the way you wish, practice your quilting designs of quilt sandwiches made from the same fabrics used in your quilt. If the color is not right, experiment with thread a shade darker or lighter.

Donations are still needed for the supplemental raffle, "Pieced Treasures". I have received two wall hanging donations at this point and a promise of two more from the Tuesday morning Stitch and Chatter Group. Donations for this part of the Quilt Show mean more excitement for the participants. I am looking for donations of lap sized quilts (52” x 64”) or small wall hangings.

Please come forward and make a donation. I will be at the meetings to accept your treasures. Thanks in advance for your support.

My Wife, The Quilter

She learned to quilt on Monday, Her stitches were very fine. She forgot to thaw out dinner, So we went out to dine.

She quilted miniatures on Tuesday, She says they are a must. They really were quite lovely, But she forgot to dust.

On Wednesday, it was a sampler, She says the stipplin’s fun What highlights! Oh what shadows, But the laundry was not done.

Her charm quilt was on Thursday, Green patches, blue and red. I guess she really was engrossed, She never made the bed.

It was wall hangings on Friday, In colors she adores. But she forgot to notice, The crumbs on all the floors

I found a maid on Saturday! My week is now complete. My wife can quilt the hours away, The house will still be neat.

Well, it’s already Sunday, I think I’m about to wilt. I cursed, I ranted, I raved - The MAID has learned to quilt!

“The secret of achievement is not to let what you are doing get to you, before you get to it. If you can't find the time to do a job right, when will you find the time to do it over? The problem with doing nothing is that you'll never know when you're through”.

The Coastal Quilt Artists (CQA),

including Bayberry members Betty Crowell, Sandy Gregg, and Mary Lou Schwinn, won an honorable mention for their slice quilt "Copley Square" (see photo below) at the International Quilt Festival in Houston in November, 2011. This quilt is the latest in a series of slice quilts made by the CQA group depicting places in New England. The group meets twice a month in Scituate and will exhibit their latest art quilts at the Bridgewater Library in March and April, and at the North River Arts Society in Marshfield from June 16 to the end of July. The group also had a featured article in the February/March 2012 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine on their “slicing” method. Once again, we find that a Bayberry member has talents that go beyond quilting. In 2011 Prime Time Cape Cod and Academy for Lifelong Learning of Cape Cod, Inc. at Cape Cod Community College sponsored a writing contest. The winners were announced in the January 2012 issue of Prime Time. June Calender won an Honorable Mention in the prose category for her short story “The Intruder”. It’s a story that makes you think about the consequences of your actions in a given circumstance. Congratulations, June, is there a story for next year? Bayberry member Sandy Gregg had a quilt in the "New Legacies: Contemporary Art Quilt" exhibit at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins, CO. Several quilts from that exhibit, including Sandy's, were featured in the January/February issue of Machine Quilting Unlimited. Sandy will also have two art quilts in the exhibit "Fiber in the Present Tense" at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA from March 1 to April 21. Opening reception will be on March 24 from 12-4.

In February, Marge Lydecker was honored as Teacher Emeritus by Elly Sienkiewicz at the Appliqué Academy in Williamsburg, VA. Marge and her students, Patty Clayton, Sue Hart, Marge Farquharson and Marilyn Swenson were asked to have quilts that they brought for “Show and Tell” hung at the Saturday evening social. Other attendees and teachers asked for the opportunity to study the quilts more closely. Hung as a group, the quilts exhibited an originality that Marge encourages and a definite New England esthetic. Elly noted that Marge Lydecker’s quilt sets are truly unique and her influences have contributed to quilting history.

Quilt Bank Update

The Quilt Bank, an outreach of the Bayberry Quilt Guild, is defined by two words: caring and giving....key words that are the framework for Quilt Bank friends (some joined seemingly forever, others

working elbow-to-elbow for the very first time). Caring and giving enabled the Quilt Bank to distribute 433 quilts this past year. Hopefully, 433 lives were touched in some way as to enable their moments of need to be easier to meet knowing that others care.
