2012PORTFOLIOVol. 4.1

Welcome to the latest copy of my portfolio. I am a freelance industrial designer based in the UK with four years experience designing helmets and apparel for the motorcycle industry. Having taken many products from concept through sourcing, development, testing and manufacture I believe I have gained a strong commercial understanding of product development, enabling me to add real value to products in a diverse range of industries.

I am passionate about designing commercially successful products which offer clients the best opportunity for a high return on investment, whilst adding maximum value for the end consumer through a focus on incorporating function, style and innovation. I have a keen eye for detail and a sensitive understanding of cost control, from manufacturing decisions to shipping considerations; skills which I think are increasingly important.

Thank you for taking the time to look through this selection of my work. If you have a project you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact me.

ABOUT ME

ImpactaArmordillo Knee BraceVelo Protector Short

Project Background:Impacta is a innovative start up from the UK focusing on products for injury prevention. Originally concerned with the medical market, Impacta have recently

been making moves to branch out into the sports industry. They approached me to help them develop their first products in this field; their Armordillo knee brace for sports injury prevention/rehabilitation and their Velo padded protector shorts for extreme sports. The knee brace is being developed in carbon fibre for its weight and structural strength and features anatomically correct

hinge, patella protection and a breathable, moisture wicking CoolMax® lining. The body of the Velo short is constructed from stretch lycra and will feature Koroyd® impact absorbing pads in critical ares and a heat pressed, mositure wicking chamois pad for comfort. Both products will be on the market later this year.

Akito / Nitro / G-MacMotorcycle Apparel

Brand/Range Management:As Clothing Development Manager within Group Lloyd’s in-house design team, I was responsible for managing the Akito, Nitro and G-Mac clothing brands. In addition to new product development, this included

art direction on everything from outsourced product design to catalogues, photoshoots, advertisements and other marketing media, ensuring continuity of brand identity throughout. Quality control was another vital part of the role which included the spot checking of shipments. Strict QC standards meant that all concerns would be relayed to the suppliers, no matter how minor, to

ensure consistent quality. Warranty returned items would be reviewed on a monthly basis and reoccuring issues would be addressed with the suppliers through redesign or component upgrade. Feedback from the sales team and end users was encouraged and used to constantly fine tune and evolve the product ranges.

Clothing Design & Development:Within the Akito, Nitro and G-Mac brands a garment’s design is taken from concept to production in-house and would include all aspects of a product’s make-up from woven washing instructions to the shipping

carton design. From initial concept sketch the design is then drafted up on the computer and thoroughly annotated with material specifications, colour swatches, construction notes etc. before being sent to the supplier along with detailed making instructions, reference swatches and size charts. Subsequent samples are then tested thoroughly on and off a motorcycle. The

garment’s comfort and fit will be evaluated by a pattern maker as well as a cross section of end users. A garment’s safety credentials are checked by ensuring the armour conforms to EC reguations and sits correctly in the garment’s lining. Seam construction and fabric qualtiy / durablility are checked thoroughly.

Akito MotorcycleSportsrider Race Glove

The Brief:Design, source and develop a long leather race glove at a highly competitive price point.

Project Background:This glove was designed to be low cost and high value. Supple drum dyed goat nappa is used in low risk areas to offer better comfort and freedom of movement whilst cow hide is used at critical points to provide a better level of safety. Perforated leather promotes airflow and accordion stretch panels offer superior flexibility. Polyurethane knuckle

guards and foam padded panels provide impact and abrasion protection. Reflective 3M panels offer some improved visibility. The silicon printed palm provides better grip and control. Carbon effect PU leather, contrast stitching, material breaks, thermo plastic rubber badges and printing add to the glove’s aesthetic and promote a feeling of quality.

SPORTSRIDER RACE GLOVE

Nitro RacingNLS102 Race Suit

The Brief:Design, source and develop a leather race suit. The principle considerations being fit and freedom of movement.

Project Background:I worked in close collaboration with World Superbike Champion Neil Hodgson to ensure high performance from this suit. Through numerous sample iterations and testing we were able to fine tune the suit’s degrees of movement to produce a garment which is both comfortable and functional. Manufactured in Vietnam from aniline dyed,

premium quality, 1.3mm thick, full grain, Brazilian cow hide, this suit incorporates state-of-the-art armour and offers superior protection. The temperature and humidity of the leather is regulated throughout the manufacturing process to keep the leather supple and prevent it from pitting, warping or rotting.

Nitro RacingIgnition Motocross Kit

The Brief:Design and develop an entry level motocross range with low manufacture costs and wide market appeal.

Project Background:Due to the ever changing nature of the trend-driven motocross market, a clean race style was chosen for this kit as it could run for a number of years. The kit’s spec is basic but carefully considered details were used to set it apart from other products in the same price range. Thermoplastic rubber (TPR) badges are used to promote a feeling

of quality and high denier materials and triple stitched seams are used at crucial areas for durability. Spandex stretch panels are strategically placed for freedom of movement.

Nitro HelmetsNGXF Motocross Helmet

The Brief:Product regeneration - revitalise a factory’s helmet shell by designing and developing new components.

Project Background:Following a sourcing trip to China it was decided that the best course of action with a new supplier was to revitalise one of the supplier’s own helmet moulds to reduce the risk of investing in costly new shell moulds. A new ABS peak, synthetic rubber goggle trim, ABS mouth vent and CoolMax® covered foam comfort liner were developed around

the factory’s existing ABS shell. The project was taken through sketching, rendering, CAD and rapid prototyping. Working closely with Chinese engineers and technicians to realise the final solution. Above you can see the original Photoshop renderings.

Nitro RacingNB102 Motorcycle Race Boot

The Brief:Design and develop a race focused superbike boot to supercede Nitro’s NB101 boot.

Project background:The boot’s concept centres around the thermoplastic pivot system which was designed to restrict freedom of movement by supporting the ankle rigidly in lateral movement and preventing hyper flexion/extension of the joint in the vertical plane. The pivot allows enough movement to change gear and brake but would prevent

the foot moving at greater angles than this. This design was based around existing sole and heel moulds to save on expensive development costs inherent with footwear sizings. Constructed from 1.5mm thick, full grain leather the boot features accordion leather stretch panels, polyurethane toe slider, reinforced gear change panel and a non-slip and oil resistant PU rubber sole.

NB-102 MOTORCYCLE RACE BOOT

Nitro RacingPivot Motocross Boot

The Brief:Design and develop an entry level motocross boot with low manufacture costs and wide market appeal.

Project background:This boot was designed to be Nitro’s first motocross boot on the market. Costs were saved by incorporating stock factory parts into the boot, such as the sole and buckles. For a market which is very fashion orientated, the aesthetic was kept relatively simple to promote wider appeal and ensure the model’s life-span would last many years to

achieve the best return on investment. To keep up with market trends, limited edition runs of boots with printed designs would be produced.

These boot designs were rendered in Adobe Photoshop.

Nitro Helmets / Dougie LampkinMotorcycle Trials Helmet

The Brief:Transform an old best selling open-faced scooter helmet model into a sporty trials helmet to revive the shell and expand the helmet’s appeal.

Project Background:This project was completed in collaboration with 12 times World Trials Champion, Dougie Lampkin. A new peak was designed to give the helmet a sportier shilouette. The peak design was sketched out and then modelled around the original helmet CAD using proENGINEER. The peak was then

rapid prototyped to check the proportions and fit and finally manufactured in ABS. The liner was redesigned to offer better moisture management and provide improved acoustic qualities. Ear cavities were included to allow the trials rider to hear the subtle tones of the engine. A sporty graphic was designed to fit the trials market and adjust the helmet’s demographic.

MOTORCYCLE TRIALS HELMET

Original scooter helmet

Nitro RacingOpen-face motorcycle helmet

The Brief:Design a new polycarbonate, open-faced, well vented, jet style helmet for southern European markets.

Project Background:This helmet’s design is based on a rising trend for aviator style aesthetics within the European scooter market. Following the design of this helmet, I worked closely with factory engineers and technicians to ensure that the design sketches/renders were interpreted correctly, reviewing and amending CAD models and rapid

prototypes to achieve the desired result. The helmet features a retractable inner sun visor, micrometric adjustable ratchet strap, large adjustable vents on the crown and twin exhaust vents to draw out hot air.

S10 CONCEPT MOTORCYCLE HELMET

University Major ProjectS-10 Concept Helmet

Project Background:The project was set by a company called Koroyd who manufacture energy absorbing cores which effectively manage impact energy. The brief was to capitalise on the benefits of this revolutionary new material

in the design of a motorcycle helmet and showcase what is achievable in terms of helmet safety and performance. Koroyd has the potential to enable the energy absorbing lining of a helmet to be up to 25% thinner whilst still performing better than EPS foams currently used. Instead of exploiting this opportunity to make the helmet smaller in size, the S-10 has a larger head cavity inside,

allowing for a removable inner liner system offering a modular interior to better fit the shape and size of the individual consumer’s head. Rather than simply purchasing a helmet based on the circumference of your head, you would be able to purchase a helmet to fit your head type and shape. This modular lining system offers a number of advantages: Dealers would be able

The helmet’s smooth shape prevents low frequency noise from wind turbulence which can cause hearing damage. This also adds to the helmet’s safety as projections from the shell are undesirable as they can quickly and dramatically alter the direction of the head during a high speed impact, potentially causing brain damage or neck injury.

to stock a smaller range of shell sizes and instead stock a wider range of lining shapes and sizes to fit a greater range of customers. Comfort and fit would be improved leading to greater concentration and therefore safety as a by-product.

The vents are designed to be operated easily with a gloved hand to prevent too

much distraction during their operation. The brow vent incorporates a simple touch latch mechanism to enable it to be pushed to open and again to close. The chin vent dial can be turned incrementally to adjust the volume of airflow. Koroyd offers superior ventilation and air flow management due to its inherent honeycomb structure. Strategic angling of the cells directs air through.

University Major ProjectS-10 Concept Helmet

Project Background:This helmet was modelled in ProENGINEER. The visor and visor mechanism were stock factory parts which were modelled first by taking dimensions from the physical parts with the rest of the helmet then created

around these features. A physical clay model had been sculpted as part of the design process to better understand the proportions and form. Photographs of this model were used as underlays in the CAD file as a guide. This model was then taken into a virtual wind tunnel to analyse its aerodynamic properties, after which, necessary adjustments were made. The

final CAD model was used to rapid prototype the shell and formed a component of a complete prototype which can be seen on pages 15 and 16. This prototype was then utilised in user trials to analyse comfort and fit.

COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN (CAD)

University CAD ProjectReverse Engineering of a Braun Shaver

Project Background:This university project was an exercise in CAD surfacing. The brief was to accurately model an existing handheld consumer product using ProENGINEER. I chose this Braun electric shaver as its complex curves and numerous intersecting surfaces presented a significant challenge. The model was created using photographs of the shaver as

an underlay. Measurements were taken from the original shaver using a vernier calipers to maintain accuracy.

The above rendering was created using Alias Image Studio and highlights the quality of class A surfaces created in ProENGINEER.

OSIM InternationaliBike Xplorer

Project Background:This was a week long university project set by Singapore based, health and well-being company, OSIM. The brief was to develop a piece of exercise equipment for busy, inner city professionals. The iBike Xplorer is not only

an exercise bike, it is a cycling simulator. The integrated computer system gives the user the opportunity to pedal their way through a variety of different virtual landscapes, bringing the enjoyment of cycling through the alps or beating your lap times in the velodrome to the comfort of your own home. The ability to save and analyse your progress allows you to race your ‘ghost’ from previous

workouts and networking the iBike allows you to race live with other users across the globe. The bike is mounted on elastomer pivots which allows the rider to lean and steer the bike. Keeping the bike balanced engages the upper body and core muscles. The large central fly wheel mimicks the gyroscopic stabilising effect of a real bicycle wheel, helping the user to balance.
