BACKGROUND • PIETER BRUEGHEL was also a Pinter maker and also

known for painting landscapes• His other nickname was “peasant Brueghel”• In 1559 he dropped the “H” from his name and

started signing his paintings as Bruegel • He had a son • was the first in a family of Flemish painters• he settled in Antwerp but ten years later moved

permanently to Brussels.• He married van Aelst's daughter, Mayken, in 1563
