TECHNIQUES PLANT

FK Lowry completed the design and installation of a £2.8 million CFA and Rotary Bored Piling project for a new Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in South London.

Construction of the £205 million state-of-the-art Energy Recovery Facility at the existing landfill and recycling site in Beddington, Sutton, commenced in 2015. The facility upon completion will provide the South London Waste Partnership with a safe and cost-effective alternative to landfill.

FK Lowry Piling were sub-contracted to Lagan Construction Group to design and install Rotary Bored and CFA Piles for the new facility over a 26 week period. The piling project consisted of 100 linear metres of hard/firm secant bored pile wall for the main waste bunker on the project. This required the installation of up to 125 rotary bored piles at 1000mm diameter segmentally cased. The rotary bored piles were installed at depths of up to 27.5 metres deep with 11 metres of 750mm diameter CFA firm piles to form a water tight basement.

A further 75 linear meters of hard/firm CFA wall was constructed for the ash bunker with secondary male piles being formed to 22.2 metres and primary female piles to 9 metres. The project also required the design and installation of approximately 900 No. 450mm, 600mm and 750mm diameter CFA Piles to depths of 25 metres to support the new structure. In order to verify the pile design, FK Lowry Piling installed and tested a preliminary test pile followed by nine static load tests on working piles.

FK Lowry Piling were awarded the £600,000 contract by principal contractor Farrans Construction for the piled foundations on a wind farm at Goole Fields in East Yorkshire.

This was a logistically challenging project with efficient delivery of piles key to its success. With 16 individual turbines to construct, some 1km apart, piles could only be delivered when piling equipment was present at each base for offloading purposes.

Timing of installation and inter-site moves was therefore critical to mitigate idle plant. More so, as piles were cast and loaded in the manufacturing yard in Lisburn and shipped to the East coast 2 days prior to driving.

The 16 bases comprised of some 645 No. 270mm square Precast Piles varying in depth from 12-22 metres. Non-standard stock piles were cast using DC3 concrete, increased reinforcement and special joints to cater for tension capacity requirements.

The project was completed utilising the Junttan PM20 driven rig with a 5 tonne accelerated hammer within the 14 week tender programme.

GOOLE WINDFARM

This project addressed a piling solution for a new biomass plant at the Port of Tyne. Driven precast concrete piles were used as the preferred foundations for a new portal frame and RC slab to store imported wood fuel pellets.

C Spencer commissioned FK Lowry Piling for the £1 million project which was delivered in seven weeks. The new handling and storage facility has the capacity to manage 1.4 million tonnes of biomass per year for use at the Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire.

Works entailed the installation of 1,515 precast piles - 270mm square and up to 32 metres in length, bearing in gravel for loads up to 1000kN, with various proof and dynamic tests undertaken.

The client was specific in the programming of the works as their priority was the installation of the piles for the ring beam supporting the portal frame to enable them to progress this element of the works. Upon completion of this element of the project all three rigs commenced installation of the slab piles inside the ring beam.

Each rig installed in excess of 500 linear metres of piles each day so the logistics of delivery were key to the timely success of the project.

Dew Piling completed a £150,000 Sheet Piling Project for Simons Group at the Riverside Project, Stafford. The regeneration of “Riverside” is a major scheme on the site of the old Riverside Recreation Centre and the former Tesco and multi-storey car park.

The regeneration of “Riverside” is a major scheme on the site of the old Riverside Recreation Centre and the former Tesco and multi-storey car park. The regeneration Project comprised of a 18-unit retail development of over 190,000 sq ft to compliment and strengthen the town centre economy and create new business and hundreds of new jobs in the town.

Dew Piling were subcontracted to install up to 100 tonnes of Sheet Piles for a new retaining wall adjacent to the busy A34 Queensway. The Sheet Piling project had a number of challenges namely, logistics and management of deliveries due to the proximity of the adjacent A34. However Dew Piling formed an excellent relationship with the clients operations team which meant the piling team were able to programme and manage the work areas to allow the site to run safely and efficiently.

PORT OF TYNE

FK Lowry Piling successfully completed piling works on a new bypass in North Yorkshire. The 4 week project at Bedale Bypass for client Wills Bros saw FK Lowry Piling design and install piles for the new traffic route in Yorkshire.

FK Lowry Piling undertook this £270,000 piling scheme for McAleer & Rushe in Edinburgh, Scotland. The £19 million, 146-bedroom hotel project was located on the famous Royal Mile in central Edinburgh.

The first major works to be carried out was the construction of roundabouts at each end of the scheme and FK Lowry Piling

designed and installed 350mm square precast piles for two structures and six bridge abutments on the £200,000 project.

North Yorkshire Highways say that around 14,000 vehicles use the existing road each day, causing considerable congestion and

the new route aims to cut traffic flow through the towns and urban areas by half. The three-mile long Bedale, Aiskew and Leeming

Bar bypass will take the main A684 road into the Yorkshire Dales and around the communities.

FK Lowry Piling were sub-contracted to design and install Bearing

Piles and a Contiguous Bored Pile Retaining Wall consisting of

154 CFA piles at 600mm diameter as well as 136 No. Rotary

Bored piles using their range of 70 tonne high torque Soilmec

Piling Rigs.

The ground conditions consisted of up to 5 metres of made ground/

fill. This was underlain with Weathered Siltstone and Mudstone

Bedrock at depth. The use of CFA Piles being installed with 70

tonne rigs proved extremely successful as FK Lowry Piling were

able to deliver the project almost two weeks ahead of programme.

FK Lowry Piling completed a £375,000 contract to construct a secant bored pile wall in Chiswick, West London. Over 400 CFA piles at 600mm diameter were installed on the project in Chiswick to form 180 linear metres of secant wall for a 6 metre deep basement for a new safestore/self storage facility.

FK Lowry Piling were subcontracted to Barratt Homes to design and install piles for their prestigious Botanics Residential Scheme off Queen Margaret Drive in Glasgow. The contract worth £700,000 saw FK Lowry Piling undertake both Driven Precast and CFA Methods on the development project.

The high profile scheme for client Underwood Carpenter was located

adjacent to the busy A40 Dual Carriageway, the main Western thoroughfare

into and out of London that carries thousands of vehicles every day.

The ground conditions consisted of made ground and fill overlying water

bearing loose to medium dense sands and gravels before very stiff clays

were encountered at depth.

FK Lowry Piling were able to mobilise their 75 tonne Soilmec SR-75 Piling

Rig working alongside the Kent based contractor, Underwood Carpenter.

Good working relationships ensured that FK Lowry Piling completed the

project to programme and budget.

FK Lowry Piling’s Soilmec SR-75 piling rig is a dual discipline Rig and has a

maximum CFA depth capability of 29 metres.

Set within the former grounds of the renowned BBC Studios, the Botanics will

feature a collection of 94 unique homes. The development will include two and

three bedroom apartments, three and four bedroom duplex apartments and

three and four bedroom townhouses.

FK Lowry Piling initially installed 195 No. 250mm square Precast Driven Piles at

2.5 metre centre to support a load-transfer platform adjacent to the river Kelvin.

This load-transfer platform was then used to support the bearing pressures of

the Soilmec SR-70 Piling Rig as it installed 110 metres of a 600mm diameter

Contiguous Bored Pile Wall. CFA Methods were also used to install 306 No.

600mm diameter bearing piles to support loads for the four new apartment

blocks on the scheme.
