    PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

    Dear Members,

In February we think of hearts and love- with that we are going to give from ourhearts and show some love to women in need in our area by purging our closets. This is a great time to make yourself stick to those New Year's resolutions- if youhave lost a size, get rid of the clothing in the old size and you will be less likely toallow yourself to go back to those old habits because it will not only hit you in thewaistline, it will hit you in your wallet! In this way you are actually not onlyshowing love to others by giving them things they need, you are showing love toyourself by taking care of yourself. This is not just limited to your closet- tellyour friends and family too.

I look forward to a great meeting with our friends at the Durham Association aswe welcome our State President and Secretary. See you all on Tuesday! Don'tforget to RSVP to Katy if you have not already done so.

    Respectfully,Kelly Bryant, CISRPresident

    Top Online Scams of 2009

Last year, one group of people carried on business with their usual dedicationand ingenuity: scammers. Thanks to their diligent efforts, millions of innocentconsumers were harassed, defrauded, and robbed of valuable personal information thatcould do serious damage to their credit and privacy for years to come. Here, in noparticular order, were some of the most memorable scams of 2009and ones to watchfor in the year ahead.

    1. Spoofing attacks: Whether they're pretending to be your bank or the Centers forDisease Control and Prevention, the scammer will send you an email asking you to goto a very official-looking web site... and divulge all the personal information your bankor the CDC either already has or would never ask for.2. Economy related scams:These preyed on people's natural concerns about theeconomy and offered bogus offers for loan consolidation, debt relief, andunemployment insurance.3. Work at home scams:These have always been popular, but they took on newsignificance due to the poor economy. The most notable feature of these scams: theylure people in by promising them easy moneybut they always require an upfront fee.4. Social networking scams:The continued popularity of Facebook, Twitter, and

other social networking sites offered a big fat target to scammers and malwaremakers looking to spread viruses, hack into people's personal accounts, or con peopleout of money.5. Classified ad and auction scams: Sites like Craigslist and eBay are great placesto find everything from a roommate to concert tickets. Unfortunately, fraudsters canalso use it as a vehicle to find victims for check overpayment cons, counterfeit ticketsales, and other scams.

Tax Season Alert: Avoid Fake IRS Scams

It may feel early, but it's time to start cracking on your 2009 taxes. By January 31,you should have received W-2s and 1099 forms for the 2009 tax yearwhich means you

can file any time. Be advised, though, that law-abiding citizens aren't the only people

keeping a close eye on the IRS's yearly schedule. Identity thieves will take full advantage of

the tax-filing season to prey on the unwary.

One clever new scheme they've developed is an email, purporting to be from the IRS,

accusing the recipient of having underreported their income. The victim is asked to

    5

  • 8/6/2019 Pinecone - Feb. 2010

    6/13

download an attachment that the sender claims is the relevant part of the victim's most

recent tax return. Of course, the attachment is actually a virus.

A similar scam relies on people's fear of an audit to get them to download a bogus

information form. If the victim doesn't complete and return the form, the emailer, posing as

an IRS representative, threatens to levy penalties and interest.

In both these casesand in any other situation in which you get an email

purporting to be from the IRSremember that the IRS does not contact

taxpayers over the Internet for any reason. Here's the word straight from the horse'smouth. All official communication is conducted the old-fashioned wayby the US Postal

Service. If you do receive an email that appears to be from the IRS, don't open it. Junk it.

    And pay your taxes.

    The Daily Telegraph

Facebook users are sitting ducks for identity

    theft

By Nick Tabakoff From: The Daily Telegraph December 05, 2009 12:00AM

USERS of networking site Facebook are sitting ducks for internetcriminals looking to steal their identities.

In research commissioned by The Daily Telegraph, which has shocked even top fraudsquad police, almost half of users in their 20s agreed to a request from a rubber duck tobe Facebook "friends".

A similar result occurred with a group of internet users in their 50s, with many agreeingto be Facebook friends with a photo of two cats.

Many of the Facebook users in both age groups volunteered some of their mostintimate details to both the rubber duck and the cats, including their full date of birth, workplace, email address and location. Some even volunteered full addresses andphone numbers without prompting.

The study was conducted by leading internet security firm Sophos.

It has raised serious questions about the wisdom of average internet users, given thefriend requests were sent without any introduction.

One of the world's top experts on cyber-crime, Superintendent Brian Hay of theQueensland Fraud Squad, said the results were "frightening".

"Some people have surrendered almost all the information a criminal needs as thefoundation to represent those people and take out financial instruments in their name,"he said."It shows scammers don't have to work very hard to find their victims."

The rubber duck posed under the bogus name Daisy Feletin, an anagram of "FalseIdentity". Sophos asked 100 Facebook users in their 20s to be the duck's friend.

    7

  • 8/6/2019 Pinecone - Feb. 2010

    8/13

More than 46 per cent who were sent requests agreed to be friends with Daisy within

    two weeks.

Of those who accepted Daisy as a friend, 98 per cent gave either a full or partial date ofbirth to the duck. All provided a full email address.

Most alarmingly, 4 per cent even gave their full address and 7 per cent gave phonenumbers. Other details given included photographs, the names ofspouses/siblings/relatives/friends, job and education histories and social interests.

Even those in their 50s gave out far too much information to the cats dubbed DinetteStonily (anagram of Stolen Identity). Of the 41 per cent who accepted "friend" requestsin the Sophos study, 92 per cent gave a full or partial date of birth, 88 per cent gave anemail address and 22 per cent gave a place of work or study.

Older people were also more willing than younger people to give out their full addressand phone information -22 per cent provided a personal phone number.

Sophos boss Paul Ducklin said Facebook users were also compromising family andfriends: "People should assume that you can never permanently remove details."

Mr Ducklin said he was surprised people were so ready to volunteer such informationwith so little prompting from an anonymous toy.

"It's clearly not a person. Why would you trust a toy from a $2 shop?" he said.

Supt Hay said protecting identity was more imperative than ever, with the harvesting ofpersonal information the starting point for serious crimes such as mortgage fraud.

"We know criminals are out there targeting Facebook. Throw into the mix that peopleare giving away too much about themselves and you've got a real problem," he said.

"The risk that people are prepared to endure for social interaction could potentially spoil

    lives.

"If your identity is stolen, you have to continually prove yourself. The stress can break upmarriages and lead to serious health problems."

    The Donkey

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as thefarmer tried to figure out what to do.

Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it justwasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and beganto shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and criedhorribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at whathe saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing..He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it offand take a step up.

Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well andhappily trotted off!

    *****

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is toshake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out ofthe deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

Free your heart from hatred - learn to forgive.

Free your mind from worries - most never happen or aren't all that bad.

Live simply and appreciate what you have.Give more.

Expect lessNOW .......Enough of that crap. The donkey later came back, and bit the farmer who had tried to buryhim. The gash from the bite got infected andthe farmer eventually died in agony from septicshock.

    MORAL FROM TODAY'S LESSON:

When you do something wrong, and try to cover your ass, it always comes back to bite you.
