Tena Koutou te Whanau.

As we are nearing the end of Term 1, I am pleased to see students demonstrating our school values of PRIDE

(Pride - Whakahī; Respect - Whakauti; Integrity - Ngākau Tapatahi; Diversity (to value) - Manaakitanga; and

Excellence - Panekiretanga).

This has been our focus for Term 1 and it’s important that we continue this throughout the school year. We are

in the core business of learning and achieving, and by modelling and reflecting these values and doing the best

we can, our mana strengthens and so to that of our kura.

I would like to congratulate Jada James for her outstanding work on our school values. Jada is the epitome of a

Piopio College student who displays PRIDE in all she does. Whakataukī o te wiki (strive for personal excel-

lence) is prominent in her schoolwork and attitude around school.

Jada has a passion for Te Reo and says her favourite Nga uara is: Ko taku reo taku ohooho, ko taku reo taku

mapihi mauria — My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul.

Jada has been awarded a Principal’s Merit as well as a canteen voucher for her outstanding penmanship and

bookwork. Ka pai ki te mahi!

at 10am and will be held in the school gymnasium. I warmly invite all whanau and members of our community to

come and join our celebration.

ences on Wednesday, 12 April. This is an ideal opportunity for you to talk to our teachers to find out how your

child/ren are doing and ask any questions you may have about their learning journeys.

Nga korero i ō tātou rūnanga — A word from our Assembly

Tēnā koutou katoa. It was great to be back in assembly this week. Due to two Teacher only days we haven't had an assembly for the last fortnight so, it felt great to be back together in the formal setting once again. It was a jam packed agenda with lots to celebrate and share. After the traditional routine of karakia and singing of our National Anthem, Mr Bodger started by connecting this week's whakataukī to individual passions. He shared how we shouldn't forget old passions we once had, such as his passion for Rugby being reignited this year in assisting Mr Draper with the 1st XV, as well as sharing how he loves re learning about Dinosaurs with his children. To conclude, he asked a student from each whare to share a passion they have. Mrs Rauputu then took the stage to celebrate our Year 12 students, as well as our Attendance Officer, Emelia Harris, for gaining their First Aid Certificates in a 3 Day workshop that took place a couple of weeks a go. Before she started, Mrs Rauputu shared her passion for Rugby, sharing memories of her playing Lock for Waitete and playing in front of a young Farah Palmer. Thanks Mrs Rauputu. Senior student, Te Kohuai Ikin then shared his experience he gained on an Agricultural Leadership programme, he won a scholarship for and participated in during the last few weeks of January. TK shared how much he learned and enjoyed the course and then he urged those with a passion for the Agricultural Industry to apply. Well done TK. The Year 13s were up next, with Head Girl, Puhiwaiora Ngawaka presenting a video of the Year 13 camp held during February. It was great to see some of the fun they had, kayaking, sailing and bonding. It was also great to see the passion Mr Draper has for Photography, filming from all kinds of angles and capturing some magical moments he shared with this group of rangatahi. Thanks Puhi. Mr Draper then announced our Athletics champions and we celebrated Rata whare's overall win. But the highlight was recognising the extra special achieve-ments of Rali Hayes-Purnell, Kyryn Young, Sidney Baker and Jessie James for breaking school records. Ka mau te wehi! Our Principal then added his thoughts on passion, and gave us all something to think about when he told us, that it is through following our passions that we reach Excellence. A message we can all take in to the classroom to try our best. Our merit winner this week was K’Lee Reiri. Till next week, e noho ora mai. Steve Bodger

The Agriculture/Horticulture group used their initiative and worked solidly

to complete the clearing, creating, draining, levelling and liming of a

section of pathway through the College's native bush area last Friday.

A special thank you must go to the group of staff who worked together to

facilitate such a wonderful learning experience

HOCKEY

We are looking for a coach for the Y7/8 hockey team. They are a great bunch of kids with enthusiastic parents who are willing to help someone coach them.

Coach would be for one after school session per week.

Games are on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons on the hockey turfs at Te Kuiti High School, but the coach would not be expected to attend the games unless

they were keen to do so. Please let Sue Draper at the College know if you are keen to help out.

CLASS PHOTOS

Piopio College has chosen to use the Online Ordering system for photographs again this year.

The online system works off each student’s name, giving them an individual ‘shoot key’ to view and order their photographs. Students were given these at

whanau time on Tuesday, 28 March. Piopio College’s FREE DELIVERY period expires at midnight on Sunday, 23 April 2017. The free delivery deadline date

is clearly displayed when families go online to view their photos.

TIMETABLE

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6

PASSION / AWATA: Definition: An intense desire or enthusiasm for something. Whakataukī: Ko taku reo taku ohooho, ko taku reo taku mapihi mauria. Translation: My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul. Explanation: This is a proverb closely associated with language revitalization, a struggle which is very important in maintaining culture and something we must all be passionate about.

ICAS Tests

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent, skills-based assessment programme which recognises and rewards

student achievement. The programme has been running for more than 30 years. Every year, 1 million student entries are accepted from over 6,300 schools in

Australia and New Zealand annually. Students from more than 20 countries participate in ICAS each year. Piopio College students have the opportunity to

enter these external tests and sit them at the College. They are best attempted by students who are academically able. The following tests are available:

It should be noted that these tests are sent to Australia to be marked and in previous years there has been considerable delay in receiving firstly, the results

(via an online portal) and then another delay until the certificates and official results sheet is sent. I have a few previous years’ test papers which the students

can borrow to help them prepare. Practice papers with answers can also be purchased online. Please send the appropriate fee(s) into the College by the

closing date listed if you wish your child to enter these tests. If you have any queries please contact me.
