We are now offering Supper thanks to the Bright From the Start Grant
Exciting new developments are taking place in the after
school program! One of the biggest additions to Project
Pirate is the dinner program! In addition to our students
receiving an after school snack, they now eat a hot meal
before returning home.
Some recent meals they have enjoyed include:
hamburgers, spaghetti, pizza and Salisbury steaks!
Students exit their break out classes around 5:45pm and enjoy their meals with their
classmates before getting ready to return home for the evening.
New Life Provides New Enrichment Classes!!!
The After School Program has added new enrichment classes to our rotation!
Art is now being taught by Mrs. Elizabeth Moulton from the Arts Council. Ms.
Elizabeth has tapped in to the students’ creative sides by encouraging them to
express themselves through art. Some recent projects they have worked on include:
name art, mosaic art, 3-d valentines and shape drawing.
Drama has also been enjoyed by all of the students in the program.
Will Murdock and Kate Willis, directors of Colquitt’s very own
Swamp Gravy, lead drama sessions allowing students to embrace
their theatrical side and have a lot of fun! Charades, Modern Day Hansel and Gretel,
Interpersonal/Expressional drama and other fun activities take place!

Notes from the Site Coordinator… Good day! So glad you could join me for a few moments to reflect on some of the things we have done since our last newsletter. The Christmas party was so much fun and the ornaments and crafts that you made for your family members were beautiful. Oh, and do not forget about Parent night in January where we had Spaghetti for supper and talked about the Georgia Milestones and Literacy. What about those Valentine’s Cupcakes and Marshmallow pops? Yum!!! In all honesty, we do have fun but the best thing of all is seeing how so many of you are trying to get help and pull your grades up. Remember we have teachers here to help you in your struggling subjects; you just have to ask for that help. Participating in the program is something that many schools do not have a chance at and so please remember to take advantage of this. Attendance and doing your work are the keys to helping those grades grow. Parents, if you have any
questions, concerns, or
ideas please feel free to
come by or call and talk.

INGREDIENTS
1 ⁄2cup chopped onion 1 ⁄4teaspoon pepper
1garlic clove, finely chopped 1(14 1/2 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1(8 ounce) can tomato sauce 1tablespoon chili powder
3 ⁄4teaspoon ground cumin 1 ⁄4teaspoon salt
1lb extra lean ground beef
1(15 -16 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained or 1 (15 -16 ounce) can pinto beans, if desired
Cook beef, onion and garlic in 3 qt saucepan until beef is brown.. Stir in remaining ingredients except beans.. Heat to boiling, reduce heat to low.. Cover and simmer 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir in beans.. Heat to boiling,
reduce heat to low. Simmer uncovered about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until desired thickness.. To freeze for
OAMC: Let chili cool to room temperature and then place into quart-size freezer bag. Remove air and freeze flat on a cookie sheet. Once frozen, can be stored in freezer standing up or stacked horizontally. To serve, thaw in fridge
overnight and then transfer to a pot and reheat over medium.

Teachers in the Bleachers
Ms. Lauren Brinson teaches Journalism and Technology for the After School
Program. Her goal is for the students to be familiar with different types of
computer programs and applications.
Ms. Lauren’s class meets every Wednesday. Students work on the 21st
Century newsletter along with many other computer projects. Students take
pictures and provide input for the newsletter.
Before Christmas break, students created a Power Point presentation with
slides about themselves. They were encouraged to use technology to help get
to know each other better.
Other projects include creating a brochure on Microsoft Publisher which they
will hand out to students who are not in the program to encourage more
participation. The class used the program Animoto to create short picture
videos of themselves and their classmates. In addition to these projects, the
students have also worked with programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

Haven is a 6th grader at Miller County Middle School. Haven's favorite thing to do in his spare time is play football. His favorite subject is Social Studies, and his favorite food is pizza! Haven enjoys spending time with his friends Harlson, Yasmine and Jadon.

Jada Sutton "I enjoy basketball and baking. My specialty is a lemon cake with strawberry icing!"
Celebrate Success!!! The Program’s 2nd Celebrate
Success Parent’s Night was held on 01/27/15. A spaghetti
dinner was served as parents and students listened to Mr.
Green, Mrs. Kicklighter and Mrs. Long talk about fun new things
in the program, Georgia Milestones, literacy information and
the possibility of a 21st Century Grant for Elementary School
students. Parents were allowed to ask questions and give
feedback. Projects were also on display for parents to see what
their child has accomplished in the program!
A 21st Century Christmas!
Christmas was celebrated in the afterschool program! Teachers and students were in the Christmas
spirit centering lessons around a Christmas theme. Cinnamon-scented ornaments, puzzle
piece ornaments, ribbon trees, jewelry and wire ornaments were among some of the
crafts completed. The students enjoyed a party
with finger foods served by the school’s
Superintendent, Dr. Kicklighter. Participants took
pictures by the Christmas tree to take home as
keep-sakes for their parents!
Michael Bryant Visits Project
Pirate! Michael Bryant, Field Representative for United States Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr., paid the high
school students a visit during the after school program. He talked to them about making good choices in life
and how good behavior can direct your path to a brighter future. The students really enjoyed visiting with
Michael and benefited from his advice. The program for the High School has introduced intensive tutoring
sessions, Plato and physical activity time to its schedule.

Important Stakeholder Information: Dr. Larry Green, our
external evaluator, recently completed our formative assessment.
We want you to know these results. We have 18 objectives with
end of year goals. Of these, 8 already are met or are close, 4
cannot be measured until the end of the year, 4 are GA Milestones
based and must be postponed until next year, 1 is showing
progress and 1 is not showing progress. This is just our “progress
report.” We will have the Summative evaluation in June. Dr. Green
recommended extra follow up for attendance, encouraging
parents to attend parent meetings, stronger follow up with
homework and revising goals and objectives when this is possible.
