Dr. Boutintreating their pain. Today, she focuses her practice on providing non-surgical treatment, medical expertise and an objective opinion about orthopeadic issues and care.

“My patients come with joint paint, injuries and arthritis. Many of them have a strong desire to be engaged in their care and want to know the factors that influence their health, not to just have me treat them,” Dr. Boutin said. “I can suggest a range of non-surgical and surgical options.” However, she will not hesitate to confirm the benefits of surgical intervention if that is the best plan of care for a particular individual and condition.

“If an older woman comes to me with a broken arm, I won’t just put her arm in a cast,” Dr. Boutin notes. “I’ll ask her about her diet, menopausal symptoms, her balance, and I will assess the entire patient and not just the injury. A broken bone hurts, but it often reflects so much

more.” She believes the focus of her practice

meets the needs of the community and reflects the southern Berkshire com-munity, where people want to learn as much as possible about their health and are eager to be educated and explore evidence-based approaches that may be available to them.

“Sometimes a drug or surgical pro-cedure is not the only answer,” she said. “That’s why it’s important to take the time to talk through all of the options.

York’s Hospital for Special Surgery before completing a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.

“The majority of my practice serves patients of middle age and above who seek orthopaedic care including hips, knees, ankles, feet, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands,” he explains. Many of his adult patients come to him as a result of injuries from mistakes – fall-ing off ladders, walking in the middle of the night without a light on, and other everyday accidents, when suddenly something goes wrong.

As a veteran doctor, he appreciates his experience as an important asset to his practice and his philosophy re-flects a strong commitment to serve his patients.

“I’m a strong believer in ‘first, do no harm.’ Second, I pursue various treatment options before surgery, when feasible and available. Third, with many years in practice, I’ve seen a lot of treat-ment methods in our field come and go. I have repeatedly witnessed that the

newest treatments often do not stand up to the test of time. If your results are good, you don’t change just because you come upon a single article that says a new treatment is better.”

Dr. Cella is happy with his decision to practice in Berkshire County. “When I go to the supermarket or the hardware store, I see current and former patients all the time. I enjoy it,” he says. “You’re nice to those people and they’re nice to you.” a

Happy to Be Hiking Again

GREAT BARRINGTON RESIDENT Beth Moser loves to travel and al-

ways walks everywhere when visiting a new place. Five years ago, she says, “I was on a family trip in Pittsburg and couldn’t even walk a half mile back to the hotel because of hip pain. That was the moment I decided to address pain that had been progres-sively worsening for years.”

She consulted Pier Boutin, MD, at Fairview Hospital’s Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine practice, who reviewed her images and referred her to Dr. Cella. Thanks to the success of hip surgery, Moser recently returned from a three-week hiking trip to the Painted Hills of Oregon.

“This was something I never could have done two years ago,” she said. “Dr. Cella takes a long view in what is best for the patient, and I felt very confident in him.” a

Dr. Nancollasing in hand and upper extremity surgery at State University of New York at Buf-falo Affiliated Hospitals, Dr. Nancollas practiced hand surgery for 20 years in Syracuse, NY, before bringing his ex-pertise to the Berkshires in 2014.

In his practice, he sees people who have lived with numbness or pain for years unaware that there are options to treat their pain.

The surgeon recalls a patient who had suffered from thumb arthritis for years. “Her first reaction was surprise. “I didn’t think you could fix this!” Dr. Nancollas recalls. “After surgery and rehabilitation, she called to tell me she was the happiest person in the world because she no longer lived in pain. She was her original self again.”

“When patients come to me, I want them to understand what is wrong diag-nostically, why they have the problem, and what options they have. With few exceptions, we discuss alternative treat-ments,” notes Dr. Nancollas.

Dr. Nancollas feels that the southern Berkshire community is unique. “While the average age of my patient is older,

they act younger, like they are closer to middle age,” he says, noting that his patients come to with medical issues normally seen at a younger age.

He recognizes that many people living in rural areas often have limited access to orthopaedic care, but the

southern Berkshires is unusual in providing comprehensive care in this specialty. “We offer great medical care and a great medical communi-ty,” Dr. Nancollas states.

“Just because Fairview is a rural Critical Access Hospital doesn’t mean it’s short on talent.”

New Doctor at Fairview

Comedian Demetri Martin

Gala Honoree Dr. Veinoglou

ONE-LINE WONDER DEMETRI Martin will headline the 2019

Fairview Hospital Gala, bringing his one-man show Wandering Mind to Great Barrington on Saturday, Sep-tember 21 at the Mahaiwe Perform-ing Arts Center in downtown Great Barrington.

Born to a Greek-American family and raised in New Jersey, Demetri set his sights on law school after graduat-ing from Yale, turning down Harvard to take a full ride at New York University Law School, only to find his classes right across the street from The Comedy Cel-lar. He left law school to do standup comedy and worked as a staff writer for Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Demetri then became a regular per-former on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Winner of the Perrier Award at the Internation-al Fringe Festival in Ed-inburgh for his one-man show, If I, he also won Australia’s’ Barry Award at the Melbourne Inter-national Comedy festival, his show Dr. Earnest Parrot Presents Demetri Martin won Australia’s Barry Award. Demetri has released three standup comedy albums and four hour-long standup comedy specials, including his latest for Netflix, The Overthinker.

Demetri created and starred in his own television series for Comedy Central called Important Things with Demetri Martin. His books, This Is a Book and Point Your Face at This, are New York Times Bestsellers. His latest book, If It’s Not Funny It’s Art, fea-tures a collection of his original draw-ings. Demetri’s fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine. He recently

wrote and directed his first feature film, Dean, which won the Founder’s Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival for best narrative American feature film.

Honoring Surgeon George Veinoglou

Dr. George Veinoglou, MD, FACS, has been a one-man wonder since

coming to Fairview in the 90’s. He is being cele-brated as Fairview’s 2019 Gala Honoree. And he is Greek. Really.

In addition to be the first surgeon in Berkshire County to perform laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Veinoglou brought national atten-tion to Fairview Hospital on an episode of Rescue 911, Ski Instructor vs. Near-Death Experience when he saved the life of a ski accident victim who suffered a heart attack during surgery.

Dr. Veinoglou was raised in Greece. He attended medical school in Cairo at Ain Shams University. He left the Mediterranean climate for the Berkshires to complete his residency at Berkshire Medical Center

and came to Fairview Hospital to build Surgical Services Department that is now performing both in- and outpa-tient surgery.

He continues to lead Fairview through its growth and recognition as one of America’s Top Critical Access Hospitals and is a hallmark of the com-mitment of Fairview’s medical com-munity to the southern Berkshires. He is as busy as ever serving the southern Berkshire community providing surgi-cal care, mentoring new physicians and serving as the Medical Director of the Fairview Wound Center. a

The INDEX framework is used nationally by state offices of rural health, health systems and rural hospitals to measure and monitor rural hospital performance and is the foundation for several national rural recognition programs and legislative initiatives.

Chartis’ National Leader Michael Topic applauds each hos-pital as “a bellwether for provider performance. The Top 100 lists are never static, which we see as a strong indicator of how proactive hospitals are when it comes to pushing for perfor-mance improvement in key areas such as quality, outcomes, patient safety, market share and finance.”CMS Medicare 2019 Awards Fairview Five Stars

In March, Fairview Hospital received the coveted 5-star rating from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for hospital care. CMS’s Hospital Compare evaluates hospitals on up to 57 quality measures to calculate the star rating.

The seven key quality measures include mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging. Of

the more than 4,500 hospitals evaluated by CMS, only 337, or seven percent, received 5-star ratings. Carechex® Names Fairview A 2019 Top Hospital and #1 in State for Patient Satisfaction

Fairview Hospital has been named a Top Hospital for Overall Hospital Care, and the #1 Hospital in Massachusetts, according to Carechex, an information service of Quantros, Inc. which provides clinical, financial, and patient satisfac-tion findings to consumers, providers, and purchasers of U.S. medical care.

This award based on responses to the HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) patient satisfaction survey. The survey includes the following nine (9) categories: overall hospital rating (scale of 1 to 10), doctor communication, nurse communication, staff respon-siveness, medication explanation, pain control, hospital environment (quietness and cleanliness), post-discharge instructions, and care transition. FAIRVIEW HOSPITAL’S Life Enhance-ment Program has graduated over

200 community members to a life of better health. Now in its eleventh session the 12-week program offers a comprehensive wellness program giving participants the tools and support to create a new vision of health for them-selves and a plan to make the changes to meet their goals.

“I don’t feel like I am the same person with the many ways I have moved forward. I still have a long way to go and always will, but it is so won-derful to have people so dedicated,” states one former participant who lost 15 pounds during the program which helped her control her binge eating habit.

The program is led by a multi-disci-plinary team of healthcare professionals who present sessions on a different as-pect of wellness each week on subjects including mindful eating, movement, emotional wellness, heart health.
