  • Nobody disputes the role of culture as a driving engine for development any longer. Culture is an unwaivable constitutional right and one of the core elements in the policies of any government thanks to its capacity to shape the knowledge society, to improve our quality of life, to create employment, and to infl uence urban regeneration and social inclusion. However, there is a lot more at stake with culture, given that our whole system of life, our beliefs, the foundations of our civilization and progress all depend on it.

In Spain, the cultural industry is the fourth in terms of GDP and gives employment to around 800,000 people. As such, it is of capital importance in achieving the goals of the Lisbon Strategy, whose aim is to make the European Union the most dynamic and competitive knowledge-based economy in the world, capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion by 2010.

Opened in March 2007, LABoral Centro de Arte y Creacin Industrial is a project driven by the regional government of the Principality of Asturias with a twofold mandate: fi rstly, to contribute to the confi guration of the knowledge society and, secondly, to stimulate creativity through technological tools and networking. LABoral offers artists, creators, technicians, teachers and other professionals a space for research, experimentation and production. This art centre in Gijn provides a working environment customised to the needs of the happening expressions and manifestations of todays art: on the intersection between society, art, science and technology.

LABoral is a pioneering centre in recognising the importance of the videogame in art and in society as a whole, analysing the various aspects of the phenomenon in Gameworld, Playware, Homo Ludens Ludens and Arcadia. In fact, these exhibitions outlined a new path that is now being followed by other museums and a path we are exploring further in Playlist.

Playlist invites us to discover a phenomenon in which a whole series of artists use obsolete game platforms to create music and visuals which they then play in public performances. I would also invite you to explore a budding exhibition format LABoral is offering with its recently inaugurated Mediateca Expandida, a permanent observatory on the evolution in creativity and innovation in technological culture; a showcase for outstanding recent production in fi elds such as the independent creation of videogames, experimental ludic projects, prototypes for proposals exploring new forms of gaming as well as video, animation and media art projects.

The curator, Domenico Quaranta, and all the artists taking part in this project have done their utmost to ensure that the exhibition, and the magazine you are now reading, will be a total success, and of course, we have no doubts as to the outcome.
