Introduce We are going to play a game called

“Eliminator”. You are going to draw 6 small lines on

your whiteboards. I am going to roll a die, and after each

time you are going to place that number on one of the lines.

The goal is to create the largest 6-digit number that you can.

Also, draw a box under your lines. This box allows you to place one of the numbers you do not like in it one time.

Understanding Place Value

In 2004, the number of Labrador retrievers registered with the American Kennel Club was 146, 692.

What is the value of the digit 4 in 146, 692?

Let’s look at a place value chart to help us understand the value of each digit in a number.

Remember - the value of a digit depends on its place-value position in the number!!

Period I thought we only used

periods for sentences! A period is a group of

three digits separated by a commas in a large number.

These periods help when writing in different forms. They help reading and writing numbers correctly.

Every period is separated by a comma.
