The corrugated iron shack is not a tool shedor a house, but the classroom of the GradeR class of 2011 at Maepa Primary Schoolnear Ohrigstad.
This year, the school has 12 learners inthis class starting their school careers. Theprincipal, Mr Steven Mkhabela ,says theschool has requested better facilities andmore classrooms “even mobile classroomswill be ok, but up until now, nothing isforthcoming.
The rest of the school building is quitenew and comprises four classrooms, withgrades sharing the classrooms, exceptGrade 7, who have their own classroom.
The corrugated iron structure was nicelyfurnished, and everything was ready forschool and education by the Grade Rteacher, Mrs Catherine Malepane.Unfortunately their wretre also no desks orspace for desks in the hot little building.Luckily a cool breeze brought some reliefthrough the large windows on the one sideof the shack.
Meanwhile the District Mayor and MECfor Education in Limpopo visited severalschools in the area on Wednesday, functioning and non-functioning to see whatis happening on ground level. They did notvisit Maepa Primary School.
The little ones were quite content in theircorrugated (iron) classroom (left). With thenis the principal, Mr Steven Mkhabela andtheir educator, Mrs Catherine Malapane. Therest of the school comprises a brickbuilding (bottom).
