Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) notes that the country’s povertylevels have dropped since 2006, reaching 45.5% in 2011 whenapplying the upper-bound poverty line.

The country has a set of three national poverty lines, namely thefood poverty line (FPL); the lower-bound poverty line (LBPL) and theupper-bound poverty line (UBPL), which are used to measurepoverty.

Roughly 23 million people living below the upper-bound povertyline. When one looks at extreme poverty, defined as those livingbelow the food poverty line, we can see the dramatic impact theglobal financial crisis of 2008/09 has had on the livelihoods of SouthAfrica’s poorest.

The number of people living below the food line increased to15.8 million in 2009, from 12.6 million in 2006, before dropping to10.2 million people in 2011.

Good Friday is a religious holiday observed primarily by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at calvary. It isalso known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday or Easter Friday, though the latter properly refers to the Friday in Easter week. This isthe time when families and friends often take a break from their work and get together to celebrate the easter weekend. Ideally this is meant tobe a time for joy.Ensure that you conduct thorough multi point safety check which includes electrical components, brakes, tyres, steering mechanism and shockabsorbers before embarking on a long journey. Plan long trips with sufficient rest stops and viewing time for enjoying the beautiful scenery thatSouth Africa is blessed with.Drive as if you are driving for others as well, be constantly aware of your surroundings and drive defensively. Road rage is a reality- do not bethe cause therefore do not be the perpetrator either, it never ends pleasantly.Do not take unnecessary risks- use common sense if in doubt, distracted driving is a killer and do not text or take calls while driving. Adjustyour speed according to the prevailing conditions. An advanced driver is mindful of pedestrians, stray animals, potholes, weather conditions, environmental issues and the like.

Remember that your safety is our concernDon’t speed or drive aggressivelyDon’t drive under the influenceDon’t drive an unsafe vehicleBuckle upDon’t overload your vehicle

Our main objectives are to reduce accidents, fatalities and serious injuries, to create a heightened awareness of road traffic safety issues, toreduce offence rates on all key safety indices, to harmonise and coordinate common operations on all three tiers of service delivery, tocontribute towards the reduction of crime in general, to maximise communications and publicity exposure on enforcement issues, to changethe perception of ‘I will not get caught’ to I will be caught and be punished. To avoid such, pay your outstanding traffic fines, renew yourvehicle license disc on time.
