Merafe’s attributable ferrochrome production from the Glencore-Merafe Chrome Ventureincreased by 28% period on period for the first quarter of the year.

The company says this significant increase was primarily attributable to a strongermarket, the impact of the non-recurring Eskom buy-back agreements and the goodperformance of the venture’s furnaces.

The Rustenburg smelter continues to operate efficiently due to the positive impact of theTswelopele pelletising and sintering plant. The venture’s operating capacity utilisation for thefirst quarter of 2014 was 95% compared to 74% for the comparative period. Ferrochromesales volumes for the first quarter of 2014 increased by 9% period on period. The comapnysays the ongoing strike in the platinum industry has resulted in reduced UG2 production andhigher chrome ore input costs at the venture’s furnaces during the first quarter of 2014, as aconsequence of a higher percentage of own mined ore compared to UG2

Merafe also announced that production from the first furnace of the venture’s R5000million Project Lion II commenced on 6 April 2014, saying ferrochrome production at theplant will ramp up gradually and it is envisaged that the smelter will be fully operationaltoward the middle of 2014.

The project has an excellent safety record with more than 8.5 million man hours worked, without a lost time injury.

What a hole!

Driving through Steelpoort hasbecome a whole or rather ‘hole’nightmare. The size of the potholes areeven forcing trucks to drive aroundthem rather than through it (seephotograph below).Attempts to fix some of the holes on

the internal streets has been underway, butthe best that has been done to the mainsection with the most traffic is some soilfilling.Road markings are also non-existent -having crumbled and washed away with theroad.

Maintenance& Upgrades

No, RS does not stand for Rocket Ship, rather Rally Sport, which is a perfectdescription for the new turbocharged andsportier Chevrolet Sonic RS.

R225000 buys you the newestperformance offering from General MotorsSouth Africa and Platinum Gazette had theopportunity to sample a specimen fromWestvaal Steelpoort this week.

Orange Rock Metallic with subdued, yetprominent RS nomenclature, the car isstriking from the outside, lying low (withlowered suspension) on attractive 17 inchalloys. Large air dam in front and trapezoidalexhaust at the back, the RS isunquestionably attractive and looks like itmeans to put the fun back into driving.

The 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine fitted tothe car does not necessarily make more firethan the same powerplant in other GMmodels distributed here, but the tunedsuspension ups handling prowess, while thesix speed gearbox moves like a dream andthe short final ratio makes for loads of fun.

The fit and finish of the body panels andtrim are up there with the best and mirroredin the quality of the materials on the inside.Black leather and suede, red stitching, redtrim everywhere you look (not too much, justenough to liven up the almost all blackluxury of the rest of the inside) andaluminum pedals. A sport style steeringwheel with a flat bottom frames a largeanalog rev counter and digital speedometer.Very nice.

The steering wheel is a multi functionaffair and brings some of the functionality ofthe new extensive infotainment system toyour fingertips.

Called MyLink, it brings smartphonefunctionality to the car and the system is anintegration of the most popular andadvanced infotainment functionsincorporated into an easy-to-use, attractiveand effective interface which transforms theChevrolet Sonic RS into a connectedentertainment hub while on the move.

And moves it does. Turning out ofSteelpoort on the tarred road towardsMashishing the turbocharged ECOTECpetrol engine makes good use of 103 kW at6 000 rpm and 200 Nm at 4 000 rpm.Audibly exciting as well, the tuned exhaustsystem allows the improved performance tobe heard while still maintaining comfortablenoise levels at all times. And it sits. Theturbocharged performance is according tothe manufacturer good for a 0-100 km/hsprint time of 9.5 seconds and a top speedof 197 km/h. We did not try this with thebrand new car, but easily dodged everypothole in the greatest comfort – the car didnot lurch once and at speed it is as steadyas a rock.

The car is not a heavy hitter like somemore expensive offerings in the market, butthe ideal vehicle for someone who has theurge for something sportier than the normaland top quality and safety. Safety equipmentincludes disc brakes all-round with ABS,EBD and BAS, ESC and Traction Control, afull-size spare wheel, ISOFIX child seatanchors and four airbags. The RS isavailable as standard with a 5-year/ 120 000km warranty and a 3-year/ 60 000 kmservice plan linked to service intervals of 15000 km. Phone Westvaal Mashishing on 013230 9519.
