PLATTE
Settlements in the Platte area in northern Charles Mix County date back to the early 1880s. Soon after these settlements were established, in 1889, North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted to the union.
For close to 12 years, Charles Mix County was the only county in the state without a railroad. This changed when the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Co. constructed the railroad line that stopped at what was to become Platte. Lots for the town were available for sale in March of 1900. Soon after, the railroad arrived and buildings were moved from settlements at Castalia, Old Platte and Edgerton.
A school building was constructed in 1924 and is still used as Platte-Geddes High School. The National Guard Armory was constructed in 1969.
The Depression and drought of the 1930s affected the Platte area, with an out-migration of individuals in search of employment and escape from the conditions. However, since that time, the town's population has remained stable at around 1,300 people for numerous years.
The hospital in Platte dates back to the late 1940s. In September of 1947, the former residence of Senator Edwin Johnson was purchased for $11,000. This two-story house was the only hospital space until 1955 when a one-story addition was added. Since that time, expansions have been made to improve the campus to a 15-bed hospital, a 48-bed nursing home, a recently expanded medical clinic, and the Platte Dental Clinic. The hospital is the community's largest employer.
Fort Randall Dam was completed in the early 1950s and Lake Francis Case has become a recreational attraction, bringing many visitors to the area. Three state parks are located in the immediate area and are instrumental to the Platte economy.
The opening of the Platte-Winner Bridge in 1966 gave travelers a new route to and from the Black Hills. It also allowed easier travel to Platte from the west.

PLATTE
Platte is located 15 miles east of the Missouri River on Highways 44 and 45 in south central South Dakota.
Platte is a friendly, family community with a wide range of recreational opportunities, strong
economy, and excellent educational system.
Platte is a leader in retail sales for towns of its size and thriving with diverse businesses and unique
shopping opportunities. Platte has two motels, a bed and breakfast and six lodges. There are eight different eating
establishments and three convenience stores to satisfy any food craving.
Nine churches, most of fairly recent construction, serve the spiritual needs of the town and area.
Platte has always been dependent upon agriculture and the area offers many choices. Pastures in the hills near the Missouri River support many cattle operations. Crops grown in the area include corn, wheat, soybeans, oats, alfalfa and grasses and there are cattle, hog and sheep operations.
The city has completed projects in recent years, replacing a large share of the water mains and sewer lines, construction of curb and gutter, and hard surfaced streets in nearly all areas of the city.
The Platte Volunteer Fire Department dates back to the beginning of the town. A rural fire district was formed several years ago and the department is well-equipped. One of Platte’s first firetrucks, a 1923 American LaFranc truck, was saved and is housed in Anne’s Firehouse on Main Street.
The Platte Ambulance Association serves the area with trained EMT’s
and up-to-date equipment.

Yellow Rose Arena
Lyric TheatreThe Lyric Theatre building opened
as the Lyric Opera House in the early 1900s and became a movie theatre in the 1930s. In the 1970s, the theatre closed. It reopened as the Lyric Museum, which housed a collection of memorabilia from the Platte area.
Early in 2004, the Lyric Museum moved across the street to its present location in the Creamery building. Later that year, the renovated Lyric Theatre reopened. A new movie is shown every Friday through Monday evenings.
The theatre is also home to productions of musical entertainment, plays, and community events, all in an intimate 250-seat setting.
Two meeting rooms are used for dinner theatres, meetings, and special events and can accommodate
up to 125 people.
Feel free to stop by and visit the restaurant and lounge, however, the big draw is the
activities. Equine events include team roping, barrel racing, cuttings, team pennings, and clinics. Other special events
include wedding receptions, dances, horseshoes, pool, darts, and
most party needs. The steakhouse and lounge specializes in
steaks, seafood, burgers and more.

Golf Course
Bowling Alley
Lake Platte Golf Course challenges both beginners and seasoned veterans over the nine-hole course.
The semi-public course, completed in 1973, also offers open green fees. The clubhouse boasts a full-service restaurant, small pro-shop and cart rentals. A new, full-course irrigation system was installed in 2001.
Members added a driving range in 2005 and remodeled the club-house in 2007.
Available leagues include both men’s and women’s teams. On Tuesdays, the ladies tee it up
in a two-person league. On Wednesdays, the men compete in both two-person and four-person
leagues. A scenic setting next to Lake Platte, watered greens and fairways, and mature trees provide an enjoyable and challenging golfing experience.
Platte Lanes is a modern, six-lane facility with automatic scoring. Open from September 1 until May 1, the
bowling alley provides leagues for both men and women. The women
compete in leagues on Monday evenings and
Thursday afternoons. The men compete in leagues on
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Bowling is open to the
public Friday, Saturday and Sunday. High school students bowl in a separate league on Sunday afternoons.
A local merchants’ tourney was recently revived. Pizza, sandwiches and beverages are available.
PLATTE recreation
The Platte area boasts an aggressive schedule of opportunities for t-ball, softball and baseball players. Games and practices are held at the baseball and softball field complex. Ameri-can Legion Memorial Field is the site for regulation baseball. T-ball, softball and younger baseball teams utilize the two smaller fields, one
of which was completed in 2002, thanks to community support and donations
from the Minnesota Twins. The American Legion Memori-al Field hosted the 2008 State High School Baseball Tournament and the 2009 State Class B American Legion Tournament.
The Summer Recreation Program provides opportunities for girls and boys from Platte, Geddes and New Holland to play in local t-ball leagues from kindergarten through second grade. Teams are fielded in local pitching leagues for kids in grades three through six. Girls’ fast pitch softball teams of several ages compete in leagues with area teams--12 - under, 14 - under, 16 - under and 18 - under. Boys also play baseball in a league with other communities. A Pee Wee team consists of boys age nine and ten and a Midget team consists of boys age eleven through twelve. Teams are also fielded for Jr. Teener (13-14), Teener (15-16), and Jr. Legion (17-18) baseball. They all play in leagues with other communities. We had three state champion teams in 2007: Teener baseball and 12 - under and 14 - under girls’ softball.
The PGDC Honkers/Hutchies is a high school club baseball team. The season runs April through May.
Platte also has an amateur baseball team and a co-ed softball league hosts several local teams.

City ParksThe Platte community is fortunate to
have three city parks. North Park boasts a softball field, tennis court, and sand volleyball court. A variety of play-ground equipment can be found to entertain the younger crowd. Two shelters with tables provide opportu-nities for picnicking. Numerous community events are held throughout the year.
The main feature of the Swimming Pool Park is, of course, the swimming pool. Platte has one of the few pools in the state with heated water. The pool offers public lessons for swimmers of all abilities. The pool also sponsors a swim team where kids of all ages compete with area teams in meets throughout the summer. Two meets are held each summer. A picnic shelter, tables and playground equipment are additional features.
The newly developed South Park features two playground equipment sets, tennis court and picnic shelters. Plans are underway for a walking path, pond and waterpark.
The Platte Women’s Club founded the public library in 1938. The club now operates the library with assistance from the city. In 2002, a new facility was built during a remodeling project of the community center. The library is
open from 12:30-5 p.m. five days a week and from 3-5 p.m. on Saturdays. There are more
than 10,000 volumes on the shelves, as well as books on tape and CD. Four computers are available for public use. Patrons may use the reading table or the children’s corner with a table, chairs and beanbag chairs.
Pre-schoolers participate in a monthly story hour provided by the Women’s Club members. A reading program is held every summer for kindergarten through sixth grade students. A book club for adults meets every other month to discuss selected works.

The Platte area offers some of the finest hunting opportunities in the state for both small and big game. Long known as a “hot-bed” for ring-necked pheasants, the area continues to provide quality hunting experiences.
Active local chapters of Pheasants Forever and East River Sportsmen’s Club help insure future hunting through the development of habitat improvement projects.
The American Legion sponsors an annual Paralyzed Veterans’ Pheasant Hunt and Banquet in November with vets coming from many states.
Small lakes and sloughs provide plentiful waterfowl hunting. The migration of snow and blue geese
can also attract hunters. White-tail and mule deer trophies can be harvested in the area. Opportunities also exist to bag Merriam turkey.

Trap ClubFor shotgun enthusiasts interested in
sharpening their shooting skills, the Platte Trap Club maintains a shooting range and offers several leagues for participa-tion. The club recently finished a new clubhouse. The range has two houses and has upgraded them to PAT status. These are auto-sets that can also be voice-activated. Two regular leagues meet in the summer. On Monday evenings, a men’s league competes. This league is also open to women and youth participants. On Wednesday evenings, a youth league competes. Youth up to age 18 may participate in this league. Later in the evening on Wednesdays, open shooting is provided for everyone. Another league is offered every two or three years. This is a WOBBLE league, where different types of targets and flight patterns are used.

Due to Platte’s location near the Missouri River, numerous camping opportunities are available. The Department of Game, Fish and Parks owns and manages three modern campgrounds in the area.
Snake Creek and Platte Creek Recreation Area are located on
the east side of the river and Buryanek Recreation Area is located on the west side. A total of 214 campsites
are available between the three areas; all but 23 spots have electrical service. Camping cabins nestled among the trees or over-looking the water can be found at Snake Creek and Buryanek. All areas have modern restrooms and shower facilities, dump stations, boat ramps, and fish cleaning stations.
Snake Creek Recreation Area also offers a marina, complete with restaurant, lounge, convenience store, bait shop, floating fuel dock and cabin rentals.
Over 12,000 campers use these areas on an annual basis.
Camping
Saddle up your horses and explore the peaceful scenery of the Missouri River hills on a newly established horse trail at Pease Creek Recreation Area. Four miles of marked trail leads through wooded areas and offers scenic views of the Missouri River. A horse camp with camping and water nearby accommodates riders. From Platte, take SD Highway 44 seven miles east, then take SD Highway 50 16 miles south, one mile east and one mile south.
Some area lodges offer horse trails and boarding.

Walleye fishing is at its best just 14 miles west of Platte on the Missouri River. Lake Francis Case provides some of the best walleye fishing, not only in South Dakota, but in the mid-state region as well. Always known as an excel-lent walleye fishery, other species also inhabit this large, pristine, Missouri River reservoir. Sauger, small-mouth bass, white bass, crappie, and channel catfish offer other opportunities for angling enthusiasts.
Numerous boat ramp facilities exist in the area, along with modern fish cleaning stations. Several fishing tournaments, both public and private, are held in the area each year.

Follow the signs for the Lewis and Clark Trail and walk where the Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, journeyed in 1804. Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Expedition to survey the West for the purpose of discovering a new land route to the Pacific Ocean, developing trade relations with the Native American people and undertaking a scientific discovery of the wildlife and inhabitants of the Far West.
Near Snake Creek Recreation Area, visi-tors can learn about Private George Shan-non, who was lost in the area for nearly two weeks. An interpretive sign near the park’s entrance tells Shannon’s story. The youngest member of the expedi-tion at 19 years old, Shannon became lost when he was sent to fetch strayed horses. Thinking the crew had moved up river, Shannon raced to meet the boats. When he was found exhausted and starving, he learned that the expedition had been downstream the entire time.
Historians and visitors are welcome to follow the path of the historic trek of Lewis and Clark.

PLATTE
Even though the railroad created Platte, the backbone of the community has been the farmers, ranchers, and area businessmen who support them. As agriculture drives the economy of the Platte area, the business community is oriented to serving that segment of the population. Those businesses include a sale barn, implement dealerships, hardware stores, seed companies, feed stores, veterinarians, lumber yards, manufacturers, contractors, repair facilities and other ag-related businesses.
Platte’s agricultural community is as diverse as the land they farm. Whether growing corn, wheat, soybeans, oats, or numerous other crops on the rich farm ground, to raising cattle and sheep in the Bijou Hills or river hills of the Missouri, Platte is proud of its rich agricultural heritage.
Many things have changed in agriculture since the day the railroad first steamed through Platte. The horse-drawn plow was replaced by the tractor and plow, which was eventually replaced by the increased use of no-till or
limited-tillage farming. Horses were a staple on many ranches around Platte. Even
though some ranches still use horses, the pickup, horse trailer, four-wheeler and semi-tractor have changed the way we care for, handle, and move livestock.
Even though many things have changed in the past 100-plus years, the hard-working ethic and proud sense of community that Platte’s agricultural community possesses has not.
