An optimized LinkedIn profile is vital for professional services business owners and executives.

LinkedIn profiles are fairly easy to complete. The value of working through each of the 4 stages is critical for any professional service firm to grow its business.

Product Summary:

Most professional services business CEOs and executives spend a lot of time making sure their website is up to date and reflects their brand image. However, few take the time to customize their LinkedIn profile. Those that do will differentiate their business, get more leads, and be better positioned as an industry expert.

This is particularly true if you’re going to use social media as one of your lead generation marketing strategies. You should know that social media outlets aren’t equal when it comes to producing B2B leads. For instance, a study of more than 5,000 businesses conducted by HubSpot revealed that traffic from LinkedIn had a conversion rate of 2.74 percent while traffic from Twitter and Facebook had conversion rates of 0.69 percent and 0.77 percent, respectively. In other words, the conversion rate for leads from LinkedIn is 277 percent greater than it is for leads from both Twitter and Facebook.

How to Write Your LinkedIn Profile

12

BEFORE You Update Your LinkedIn profile

Overview Before Updating Top of Profile Summary Section Remaining Sections Optimize

What your profile is useful for

LinkedIn profiles are central to modern networking, hiring, and recruiting practices. LinkedIn users can uncover opportunities by reaching out to past and present colleagues, industry peers, and potential customers, prospects and partners.

Writing a complete and professional LinkedIn profile is a critical part of your online brand. In order to make the most out of LinkedIn’s tools and services, your first step should be to strengthen your profile page and create what LinkedIn calls an “All-Star Profile.”

How to Write Your LinkedIn Profile

Simply put, the more complete your profile, the better the odds that your target audience will find you in the first place. Once people land on your profile it’s important to showcase what your skills are, where you’ve worked, and what people think of you.

So fill out every single section of your profile. The good news? LinkedIn will actually measure the “completeness” of your profile as you work and offer suggestions on how to make it stronger.

Before you make changes to your profile make sure you turn off this setting. Otherwise your network will be notified of any changes you make to your profile

If you want to view your competitors’ profile or your prospects without them knowing you should turn this to private model

Review the information that can be seen by non-logged in members. To gain more exposure, consider showing most of your information in your profile.

If you have not already done so, claim your custom URL by clicking on the Edit URL. You can use whatever you want but we suggest you use your name.

1

Consider turning this off, some of the visitors to your profile could see other competitors who might have looked at your profile and move off of your page and on to theirs.

Again, the more information you are willing to share, the more likely you will be found.

The Basics - Your name

It’s best to keep your name plain and simple. More importantly, it makes it easier for potential employers and prospects to find your profile.

Design your Headline for Success

Your headline is one of the most important portions of your LinkedIn profile – it doesn’t have to be your current job title and company. Starting with a headline that's engaging and to-the-point is crucial - it's the first piece of information a lead will see about you, so it has to say a lot in only 120 characters. It is an excellent place to include keywords for your industry, your specialties and your value proposition, and the more specific you can be about what sets you apart from the competition the better. It will also show up frequently throughout key LinkedIn locations such as:

Search Results

Connection Invitations

Employee Listings

Company Pages

Messages

Look at your competitors, industry leaders and clients to identify good practices and terminology from within your industry when writing your headline and profile

Your Profile Picture

Picking a LinkedIn profile picture can be tricky. You’ll want to choose a picture that's appropriate and professional, but what else should you be looking for?

A professional headshot looking to the camera gives the impression of a focused and attentive professional who is an engaged listener that’s ready to learn how they can help a business succeed.

1

It’s much easier to publicize your profile with a customized URL (ideally linkedin.com/yourname), rather than the clunky combination of numbers that LinkedIn automatically assigns when you sign up.

How to get one? On the Edit Profile screen, at the bottom of the gray window that shows your basic information, you’ll see a Public Profile URL. Click “Edit” next to the URL, and specify what you’d like your address to be. When you’re finished, click Set Custom URL.

Edit your URL

Go to your profile and in the upper-right corner, you will find a block called “Edit public profile and URL”. Click that open.

Again, in the upper right corner, you will have the option of editing your URL. This is a chance for you to clean your URL and make sure it isn’t a random set of letters and numbers, which LinkedIn has automatically generated for you.

If you have a common name and it’s already in use, you can still use your own name and control the rest of the URL, by for example inserting “john-snow-king-of-north” instead of just “john-snow”.

If your name has special characters, consider changing them to more universal characters. This will make you easier to find through Google or Bing, and as your URL is cleaner, it is nicer to copy or add to your email subject line or other instances.

Writing Your LinkedIn Summary and About Section

Overview Before Updating Top of Profile Summary Section Remaining Sections Optimize

Determine your Audience

Below your profile photo, name, and headline is your LinkedIn profile summary, also known as the About section. This section is underutilized or left blank by many LinkedIn users but serves as your introduction to anyone visiting your profile.

Make Your Summary the Focal Point of Your Profile

Just like the summary on a resume, the summary on your LinkedIn profile really gives you an opportunity to shine. This is your space to differentiate yourself from all the other executives and firms in your industry. With 2,000 characters to work with, the profile summary section gives you plenty of room to convey information that might not fit elsewhere in your profile.

Before you begin writing your summary, take a moment to consider your audience and goals. The tone, language, or calls to action you include in your profile summary will depend on who you’re trying to reach:

Existing customers

Prospects / potential customers

Channel partners / distributors

Press/analysts that cover your industry

Clarifying your goals and audience beforehand helps lay down some guidelines before you begin writing.

Writing Your LinkedIn Summary and About Section

Overview Before Updating Top of Profile Summary Section Remaining Sections Optimize

Use Your Summary Space

“Ideally, your summary should be around 3–5 short paragraphs long, preferably with a bulleted section in the middle. It should walk the reader through your work passions, key skills, unique qualifications, and a list of the various industries you’ve had exposure to over the years.”

Use Numbers Right Up Front

“Highlight past results in your summary. When possible, include numbers and case studies that prove success. Social media consultant and speaker Wayne Breitbarth, for example, quickly establishes credibility with his audience by stating in his summary’s second sentence: ‘I have helped more than 40,000 businesspeople—from entry level to CEO—understand how to effectively use LinkedIn.’ Never underestimate the power of a few key stats to impress a reader.” American Express OPEN ForumMake Your Summary Warm and Welcoming

The summary section is your prime opportunity to showcase the good things about you, with your target audience in mind. Let them get to know you. Make sure you don’t come across as pretentious, or write your profile in the third person. Make it easy for the reader to get a feel for your personality and style. Be you here - keep the brand message in line with all of your other professional marketing materials, but realize that LinkedIn is a platform designed for interaction.

The remaining portions of your profile are self explanatory. All of the information should be up to date and fully completed. Make sure you think about the keywords that will drive traffic to your profile. One area you should look at is your skills section.

1

2

By default LinkedIn highlights the skills(only the top three unless a visitor wants to see more) that received the highest amount of endorsements. Make sure those are the ones you want highlighted in your profile, if not, you can rearrange them.

1

To show up in more searches, make sure you maximize the amount of skills are shown. Take full advantage of this option.

2

Resist the temptation to cut and paste your resume into the experience column of your LinkedIn profile. Try to use words in this section to paint a revealing portrait of the skills and talents you possess.

Experience

Don’t list all of your previous jobs, unless all of them are relevant to your current situation. Instead, focus on the workplaces and experiences that benefit you and your firm the most, and list your greatest achievements and areas of focus.

Remember to update your current position every once and then as well! Many people refresh their job experience for a specific position only after they have left their post and moved on to a new job.

However, many of us see our job descriptions change while we work, and if you are involved in an interesting project or manage to achieve something exceptional while in your current post, it makes sense to update it to your current job experience.

Your Skills

Add relevant skills and ask your friends and colleagues to endorse you. More is not more when it comes to LinkedIn Skills - it is better to list fever skills and gain endorsements than to list a wide array of different type of skills but have no one endorse them.

Make sure you update this section a few times a year as well - whenever you learn a new skill or feel like a skill you have listed is no longer relevant to your career. Add your interests, and again make regular changes accordingly.

Your Volunteer Experience

Jenny's past volunteer experiences give a glimpse into her personal passions. Listing volunteer experiences like Jenny has helps showcase what you care about outside of work.

Accomplishments

Adding accomplishments to your profile is another great way to set you apart from the competition. There's no reason to be humble here. Take a look at Allison's list for a little inspiration.

Prospects spend countless hours scouring LinkedIn in search of potential partners and suppliers. And when they find them, they contact said high performers. Knowing this, you’ll serve yourself well to market yourself and your organization as a high performer in your summary and experience section (think action words, accomplishments, talking about times your firm has been chosen for projects).

Recommendations

Lastly, recommendations can help build trust with potential new leads, making them more likely to hire your business. Here, Jordin has gotten recommendations from multiple roles to help balance out her diverse background.

Don’t Be Afraid to Pick Which Recommendations You Show

Let’s be honest, not every LinkedIn recommendation you receive is beautifully written or even relevant to your professional success. Luckily, the platform now sends you recommendations before they go public, and you can decide to add them to your profile, dismiss them, or simply allow them to languish in their pending status. You can also manage recommendations that are already on your profile by clicking the “Edit” icon on that section and toggling to “Show” or “Hide” each one. If it’s close but not quite right, you can also request revisions from the person who wrote it.

Manage Your Endorsements

Endorsements can be a great way to show off your skills—as long as your profile isn’t overloaded with too many to really send the right message. The secret to making them work for you is keeping your skills updated: As you transition between careers, develop new skills, or take on new responsibilities, drop outdated skills from your profile and add the ones you really want to be known for. Now, when connections land on your page, they’ll only see the most relevant skills.

Add Projects, Volunteer Experiences, or Languages

Do you speak Mandarin? Have a project management certification? Volunteer for Dress for Success every weekend? Adding these “additional” profile features (listed on the left when you’re editing your profile) is a great way to showcase your unique skills and experiences and stand out from the crowd.

Request One LinkedIn Recommendation a Month

When someone says, “You did a great job on that project!” ask him or her to take a snapshot of that success by writing a recommendation on LinkedIn. And don’t be afraid to specify what you’d like the recommender to focus on. Getting generic recommendations that say, “Lea was great to work with” aren’t very helpful—but something specific, like “Lea’s contributions on the project enabled us to increase forecasted savings by 5% over our original plan” will really showcase your strengths.

But Make Them Strategic

“Make a strategic plan for your recommendations,” says Nicole Williams of LinkedIn. “Approach different people and suggest particular skills or experiences you would like them to highlight.”

Page 31: Playbook · Playbook Overview - Why Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile? Overview Before Updating Top of Profile Summary Section Remaining Sections Optimize Introduce the plan to your

Update Your Status

Just like on Facebook, you can update your LinkedIn status as often as you wish. So, do! Update it professionally and strategically (share the article you just wrote, not what you ate for lunch today), ideally once a week. Your entire network will see your updates, both in their news feeds and in the weekly LinkedIn network updates emails they receive.

Become an Author

All users can write and publish their work on the platform. Share your perspective about what’s going on in your field, weigh in on a recent industry development, or show off your skills as a writer. It’s a great way to get noticed.

Read More: LinkedIn Has Added a Publishing Platform: Here’s Why That Matters

Or Add Your Blog

If you have a WordPress blog, consider using a plugin such as Social Media Auto Publish or WP LinkedIn Auto Publish to automatically publish your new posts to LinkedIn.

Be a Groupie

LinkedIn Groups are an incredible resource—and they can do wonders for your job search. By joining groups relevant to your profession or industry, you’ll show that you’re engaged in your field. But more importantly, you’ll instantly be connected to people and part of relevant discussions in your field – kind of like an ongoing, online networking event.

Certificates

Many instances giving certifications have now made it very easy to add the certificate to LinkedIn, and you should explore this option to gain a competitive edge.

If a talent scout, media representative or a prospect is looking for someone who is experienced in Google Analytics, for example, you can stand out by showcasing your certificate in the matter instead of just listing Analytics as one of your skills.

Of course, adding it as a skill further polishes your expertise, especially if you gain endorsements from your peers.

You can simply add the certificate to the certifications-column in LinkedIn, and input the certificate data.

Then add the certificate URL to the last column, so people can check it if they wish to do so. You can store the certificate where you wish, as long as you make it visible to everyone with the link.

Ask For Recommendations

LinkedIn recommendations are becoming more and more popular and important.

There are two ways to get recommendations: you can send a request to a LinkedIn contact and ask them to write a recommendation to you (or just ask them in any other way as well), or you can write a recommendation to someone and hope they write one back to you.

Perhaps the best way to go about this is to agree with a colleague (or other affiliation) that you write recommendations for each other. The more precise and valuable your recommendation, the better recommendation you can expect to gain back!

You can find the buttons for requesting and writing a recommendation by going to your contact’s profile page and clicking the white “More…” button next to “Message”.

Keep the recommendation brief and preferably allow the contact to see and comment on the recommendation before you send it and they mark it as visible.

It is also polite to ask what the contact would prefer to be specifically recommended on. You can also make wishes once you ask for your recommendation in return.

The Profile Strength Meter

This tool gauges how robust your profile is. The strength of your profile will increase as you add more relevant content to it. The feature recommends which profile sections you could add to in order to improve the discoverability of your profile in search results, and to increase profile search appearances. The meter is displayed on both desktop and the LinkedIn mobile app.

To view the Profile Strength meter:

1. Click the ’Me’ icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage.

2. Select View profile.

3. Below your top card information, move your cursor over the meter to see which steps you’ve completed.

4. Click the Dropdown icon in the upper right corner of the meter to discover more information about the next profile strength completion step.

5. Follow the prompts to complete any of the steps listed.

6. Once the meter is full and all prompts are complete, you’ll receive an All-Star profile rating.

7. Note: Once the meter is full and all the prompts are complete, you’ll receive an All-Star profile rating and the profile strength meter will no longer be displayed on your profile.

Write Articles

LinkedIn isn’t necessarily the best place to add articles from the point of view of search visibility, but having articles is a good way to increase your professional credibility and improve your thought leadership position, as well as explain your professional viewpoints.

And LinkedIn articles do get indexed by Google (as long as they, and your profile, have been marked visible to public), so as long as you search engine optimize your text, it can be found through search engines as well.

Try to write a new article at least every three months, and activate your efforts especially if something in your industry becomes “hot”, and you have specific and accurate knowledge about it.

Writing an article and publishing it in your personal profile at the right time can help you develop and maintain thought leadership position in niche topics.

Pay attention to pictures and title length - your title should not exceed 60 characters. Add relevant hashtags to your social media message, when you publish and advertise the post.

If you can think of specific people who might enjoy the article, tag them in the message as well!

The organic reach of LinkedIn articles is quite low, so adding keywords and tagging people are good ways to increase your reach and help your article gain visibility.

Optimize Your Term Weight to Increase Search Visibility

Find out what are the most common terms in your current LinkedIn profile.

Once you find that out, you are able to make the necessary improvements to make sure you are found in the search terms that are most important to you.

There are a couple of ways you can find out and visualize your most common terms.

The easiest way is to go to your current profile and choose all text visible in your profile. You can then go to a website which allows you to create visual word maps (such as www.wordclouds.com), add copy-paste in your list of words, and see what are the most often recurring words in your word cloud.

Run this test and if you're not happy with the results, optimize accordingly! Pay attention to wording and using the right terminology to increase your visibility in search results.
