From earliest infancy, play is the primary way children learn. Through play, children eagerly use all

the “tools” they have at their disposal - their bodies, their relationships with their family and peers,

and the world around them. Play, more than any other activity, fuels healthy development of young

children. It is through play that much of children’s early learning is achieved.

What is play and why is it important?

There’s a lot happening during playtime.

Little ones are lifting, dropping, looking, pouring, bouncing, hiding, building,

knocking down, and more. Children are busy when they’re playing. And, more than that, they are learning. They are

learning key scientific concepts, such as what sinks and floats; mathematical concepts, including how to balance blocks to

build a tower; and literacy skills, such as trying out new vocabulary or storytelling skills as children “act out” different roles. Play

is the true work of childhood.

According to Fromberg and Gullo (1992), play enhances language development, social competence, creativity, imagination,

and thinking skills. Frost (1992) concurred, stating that "play is the chief vehicle for the development of imagination and

intelligence, language, social skills, and perceptual-motor abilities in infants and young children".

When children use fine and gross motor skills in their play, they react to each other socially. They will think about what they are

doing or going to do. They will communicate with the playmates by language and respond emotionally to the play activity. The

integration of these different behaviors is a key to the cognitive development of the toddlers/preschoolers.

The commitment to a right to play"States Parties recognize the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts." Not only do children have the right to play but States must also "encourage the provision of appropriate and equal opportunities for cultural, artistic, recreational and leisure activity."- Article 31, United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989)Apart from the UN States commitment, parents should act as an active role to encourage the provision of for various activities to their child.

Four essences of Right to PlayChild-oriented: Children have the right to decide what to play and how to play, rather than following the instructions given by adults all the time. Active exploration is a key of play for children to explore, invent and create.Growing fun and healthy: Every child needs to play; happiness coming from play is very crucial to children’s development as it helps to relax and relieve stress.Anytime & anywhere: Giving a flat refusal when children want to play may have negative impact on children. Adult should support and facilitate children’s play whenever they express the will of play. For example, if children want to play on the table, adults can respond to the requests by trying quiet activities such as arts & crafts activities.Playable Space: It includes playgrounds, recreational facilities and space designated for children; parents’ attitude towards children’s play; children’s opportunity to play; and children’s freedom of choosing what and how to play etc.

Providing enough sensory integration activities is important at the Early Childhood development. A person with Sensory Processing Disorder finds it difficult to process and act upon information received through the senses, which creates challenges in performing countless everyday tasks. Motor clumsiness, behavioral problems, anxiety, depression, school failure, and other impacts may result if the disorder is not treated effectively.

Gross Motor development involves the larger, stronger muscle groups of the body. Gross motor skills are larger movements your baby makes with his arms, legs, feet, or his entire body. Gross motor activities help your child to really “feel” their muscles and joints. Jumping, running, crawling, sliding, climbing and riding gives good proprioceptive input.

Balance and coordination skills help toddlers interact with the world around them and perform more complex physical activities. Running, jumping, kicking, throwing, drawing pictures or constructing block towers are all examples of activities that develop a toddler's balance and coordination. Balance and coordination skills develop over time as children play and experiment with their worlds, so it's important to provide a safe, supportive environment as your toddler learns to develop these skills.

Self-confidence is an essential ingredient for all aspects of the child’s healthy development and a key ingredient for school success. Confidence is a belief in your ability to master your body, behavior, and the challenges you encounter in the world. Children who are confident are eager to learn new skills and face new challenges.

Fine motor movements involve the coordination of small muscles in the hands and fingers. Strong fine motor skills are essential to complete tasks such as writing, cutting, using a fork or spoon, threading beads, moving puzzle pieces, zipping, buttoning, and tying shoe laces. Without well-developed fine motor skills, a child may have difficulty learning to write or performing many of the other critical tasks presented in the preschool and kindergarten classrooms.

Creative power increases a young child's desire to learn and supports intellectual development. Creativity fuels the ability to problem-solve, innovate, and explore new and unfamiliar areas. It is the hallmark of ingenuity, which leads to successes in the world of art, science, and technology. Children who are encouraged to think creatively exhibit higher self-esteem and motivation.

All children need to learn appropriate social skills. Social skills are behaviors that promote positive interaction with others and the environment.Through the use of modeling, role-play, reinforcement and other specially designed techniques a child can learn to make and keep friends, deal with bullies, manage anger, and lead a satisfying life.

Sharing is not an innate ability that occurs along the developmental pathway. Instead, it is a skill that needs be learned verbally, through observation, and from experience. Reinforcing the importance of sharing throughout childhood fosters cooperation, a sense of social responsibility and responsibility to others, the ability to engage in teamwork, empathy, kindness, and social skills, among other attributes.
