You must meet ALL proficient criteria plus one of the following to qualify:
Actively incorporates others into the discussion Challenges ideas and conclusions in thoughtful, well-
reasoned exchange of ideas Summarizes points of agreement and disagreement Qualifies or justifies own views and understanding Makes new connections in light of the evidence and
reasoning presented.
Preparing for a Socratic Seminar
• Use your sources to prepare statements and questions that you are want to present during tomorrow’s seminar.
• Remember, use this discussion will help you to gain ideas for writing your essay. Plan well and your essay will be easier to write
• Look at the Scoring Guide and choose a goal for this session. Write this goal in the space provided.

Socratic Seminar #1
• Find Your Shoulder Partner and say, “Don’t Leave me!”
• Partner A is the person with the person with the most pockets.
• Partner B will find a seat in the inside circle.• Partner A will find a seat in the outside circle,
close to their partner.

• Outside circle, fill in the heading of the Scoring Guide.
• Be sure to listen carefully. You may NOT check a box if you do not observe your partner doing the activity. I will be watching too.
• If you check an Advanced activity, you must note what they did next to the bullet if your partner is to get credit.
Socratic Seminar #1• Remember, you are in charge of the seminar. I
will observe. • There is ABSOLUTELY no talking unless you are
contributing to the seminar. If you break this rule you will be removed from the seminar and receive a “0” for today’s presentation.
• Listen carefully, respond thoughtfully, and stay on topic.
• Use the “Bounce Cards” and the posters for help.
Socratic Seminar #1• Remember, you are in charge of the seminar. I
will observe. • Inside circle, the first part of the seminar will last
8 minutes..• You will then have 2 minutes to conference with
your partner so that you may get ideas and add more to the discussion.
• Your discussion will continue for 5 more minutes.• Time to debrief and switch!

question?– What was the most interesting
idea to come from a participant?– What was the best thing you
observed?– What was the most troubling
thing you observed?– What do you think should be
done differently in the next seminar?
