Section R1 (13 marks) Read the following article and answer all the questions.
Rainbow Swamps
Last year, Brent Rossen was walking through a forest in Virginia, USA. In many forests there are swamps, which are very wet areas of land. On this particular day, Brent noticed something very unusual about the swamp. The water was not the normal muddy brown, but many different, bright colours. Thinking there had been a toxic oil spill, he took a photo and uploaded it to the internet. It immediately received a lot of attention. Many people said that they had seen something similar, but nobody had ever taken a high-quality photo quite like Rossen’s before. One commenter described it as looking like a coloured chalk painting, while for others it looked like weird stripes of coloured sweets. Rossen himself compared the colours to stained glass windows found in churches, but nobody seemed to have an explanation. Eventually Jeff Ripple, a biologist, posted a comment saying that the effects were due to natural oils in the ground – a result of old, decaying vegetation. A resident of Florida, Michael Hussey, explained further. ‘There is a swamp like this near my house. The rainbow effect is stronger when the weather is still. Strong winds are bad for it and if it doesn't rain for a while, the colours become brighter.’ Hussey says that in the last forty years, he has seen it roughly every four. ‘I’ve probably seen it happen ten times in my life,’ he said. Hussey’s rainbow swamp in Florida is typical, claims Jeff Ripple. It’s small, so it is easy
for the colours to group together and become bright. However, Rossen’s swamp was
different because it was the size of a lake. The decaying process must be very intense
for the colours to be visible at all. Unfortunately, when scientists went to the swamp,
the colours had already gone. The area had been disturbed by those who went to see
it, something a growing number of people are doing.
In questions 1–3, please answer in complete sentences. (2 marks each) 1. At first what did Brent Rossen believe had happened to the swamp?
2. What causes the rainbow effect in swamps like this?
3. What kind of weather is needed for a very bright rainbow swamp to occur?

Section R2 (7 marks) Read the five short texts below, which are all book reviews. Choose from the texts
(A to E) and complete the answer grid. The texts may be chosen more than once. One has been done for you as an example.
A. ‘Amazing Rainforest of the Amazon’ will be in bookshops next week! Read this book to
discover more about the wonderful rainforest and incredible creatures that live there.
There are hundreds of beautiful illustrations and images of birds and insects caught on
camera. The book is filled with fascinating information, including steps we can take to help
save the rainforest. Reserve your copy now!
B. Fans of historical fiction won’t be disappointed by Philippa Mosse’s latest novel. Set in
19th century America, it is carefully researched and tells the story of a poor family living
on a farm in Ohio. Their youngest son leaves home to join the Gold Rush in California,
hoping to make a fortune. You’ll remember the characters in this book long after you’ve
finished the last page!
C. This is a wonderful picture book to read to little ones. Milly and Jacko climb into their
rocket and set off on an adventure together. Their destination is the Moon. Will they
manage to get there and back? Young readers will really enjoy the characters’ journey and
they will absolutely love the colourful illustrations.
D. The magical kingdom of Flandia is in danger. Can the young hero Carolus and his faithful
dragon save it from the evil enemy who plans to invade it? Will the huge birds with four
wings from the forest help them as they have done before? Fantastic descriptions of battles
will transport readers to another world and keep them turning the pages!
E. Lovers of crime fiction have been looking forward to the latest novel by best-selling
author Patrick White. Inspector Bonet of the French police is called in to investigate the
disappearance of a wealthy businessman. However, although the opening scene is exciting,
the novel then becomes slow-moving and is unfortunately not of the same high standard as
other books by this writer.
