The faithful who are prevented by age or illness may also gain the Plenary Indulgence so long as they are sorry for their sins and have the intention of going to sacramental confession, attending mass and praying for the Pope’s intentions as soon as possible. They should spend time prayerfully before an image of St John Bosco, and say the prayers indicated above, and offer up their suffering or difficulties in life. Plenary Indulgence in this Holy Year of Don Bosco A plenary indulgence discloses the fullness of God’s mercy, which is expressed primarily in the sacra- ment of Penance and Reconciliation. This ancient practice needs to be properly understood. At the centre of the reconciliation process is the sacrament of Penance, but even after we received forgiveness for our sin through this sacrament, we continue to be marked by those ‘remnants’ or consequences of sin which prevent us from being fully open to grace, and we need purification through Christ’s grace. To obtain this, the gift of the indulgence is a great help to us. What is an indulgence? An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment (time in purgatory), for sins which have already been forgiven. Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence for this bicentennial of Don Bosco’s birth. How do I gain an indulgence? A faithful Christian who is duly disposed can gain an indulgence under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which dispenses and applies the treasury of the graces of Christ and the saints. A faithful Catholic may receive the indulgence if they are sorry for their sins, are motivated by charity, and who fulfill the usual three conditions, namely: 1. Go to sacramental confession 2. Participate in the Eucharist 3. Pray for the intentions of the Pope Ideally, all three conditions are met on the same day; if this is not possible, they should be fulfilled within a week. Can I offer my indulgence for someone else’s intentions? Yes. An indulgence may also applied in suffrage for the souls of those in Purgatory, if on January 31, 2015 (Solemnity of St John Bosco) or August 16, 2015 (his 200 th birthday), you: Participate fully in a sacred function celebrated in honour of St John Bosco or Spend some time in prayer before a relic or holy picture of St. John Bosco, concluding with the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and prayers to Our Lady and St. John Bosco or

At the centre of the reconciliation process is the sacrament of

Penance, but even after we received forgiveness for our sin through this sacrament, we continue to be marked by those ‘remnants’ or consequences of sin which prevent us from being fully open to grace, and we need purification through Christ’s grace.
