Arrival of the Lake Expresson Sunday morning con-firmed that Spring is hereand boating season is aboutto begin.
As we approach launchtime, it is appropriate thatwe review our first quarterat Pointe Marine.
The first major event wasour Annual Meeting. Therewere 63 stockholders repre-sented by proxy and 7 inperson (although there weremore members in atten-dance, there stock was rep-resented by proxy). Thiswas by far the greatest num-ber of stockholders repre-sented in recent memory. Both proposals passed.Proposal #1 – dredging theechannel entrance – 60 infavor, 8 opposed, and 2 ab-
stentions: and Proposal #2,repairing the roof on ourunheated storage building –65 in favor, 3 opposed and 2abstentions. Bill Gerlingand Dick Jeannot wereelected to second terms, andJoel Gauthier was elected toa first term. Subsequent tothe official agenda, open
discussion occurred generat-ing many suggestions re-garding improvements tomarina operations. Theboard is reviewing them atthis time.
At the meeting I expressedconcern, that due primarilyto the Michigan economy;
we might have some diffi-culty filling our slips. For-tunately, this did not materi-alize.There are only 4 slips to berented. Slip revenue as of 3/31/07 is 9.15% above lastyear’s, with a whopping28.87% coming from nonstockholders, and now
stands at 2.69% over the$22,000.00 budgeted sliprevenue for this year.
Slip fees are allocated to themonths of April through Sep-tember. Storage is recognizedOctober through March. Forthe quarter, our revenue wasdown slightly (4.4%) with
service showing a decline andstorage an increase. Expenseswere down 19.9% resulting ina $22,261.27 small loss($13,267.11) than 2006. Firstquarter and fourth quarterlosses are expected since stor-age revenue allocations are$21,500.00 compared with$37,500.00 for slips.

Noel Koewers, our head mechanic forthe last several years, put in a letter of resignation at the end of the winter.Noel has always wanted a marine repairbusiness of his own, and when he had an
opportunity near his hometown of Bridgeton to buy one, he jumped at theopportunity. Noel and Pointe Marinehave parted company on very goodterms, and we all wish him well in hisnew venture.
When one door closes, another opens.
Enter our new mechanic, Brian Sturm.Brian has been a mechanic with Torre-sen marina for the last 6 years, and waslooking for change. Mr. Sturm has been
around engines and electronics most of his life. In boating terms, he is a
in Muskegon off from Laketon nearScrib’s restaurant.
Brian told me several times how
happy he is to be at Pointe Marineand how much he is looking forwardto the season.
Welcome Brian Sturm

his excellent work. After that, he workedin the automotive field for some 22 years.
At Torresens, Brian was a marine-mechanic, operated heavy equipment, andworked on marine electrical and plumbingprojects. He is certified in Yanmar dieselengines, and has had formal training inlarge Volvo diesels. He also has on the jobexperience on large barge outdrives.
Brian prides himself on being a regularworker; one that shows up everyday andputs in a full day of work. He is marriedand has one daughter. The Sturm’s live

Marina Equipment Requires Marina Personnel
During the April board meeting, board
members discussed the use of marinaequipment by members. In the past, members have operated the Travel-liftand gin pole, and used other pieces of marina equipment without the knowl-edge or assistance of marina personnel. The board voted unanimously that thisprocess must stop. Certainly, liabilityto the marina was a top concern. Lift-ing a large boat out of the water, or
Hoisting a 50 ft metal mast onto a sail-
boat in moderate wind requires substan-tial training, and our marina staff is atyour service. In addition, some smallerpieces of equipment like drills and sand-ers have come back to the marina inrough shape after being used on a job.
Please coordinate all of your service
needs with Tighe Wierengo.
It looks like all of the permits have
been approved, but our project todredge our marina entrance into Mus-kegon Lake has another hurdle to jump through. Dredging is not al-lowed in the months of May or Junein Michigan. It appears that work will begin in July on several week-days to minimize the affect on ourboating, and all of the dredged mate-rial will be carried away.

Marina Workboat
Tighe has been putting some time in this winter on convert-ing an old fiberglass hull into a useable marina work boat. The boat needs to have a wide beam for stability, with lowfreeboard and a lot of storage capability. Not only will thiscraft be of use in our own marina, but the plan is for ourservice personnel to be able to work on boats in other Mus-kegon Lake marinas. Capable marine mechanics and fiber-
glass workers are at a premium in the summer, and we havesome of the best right here at Pointe Marine. Service atother marinas will expose many new Muskegon Lake boat-ers to all that Pointe Marine has to offer in slips, service, and storage. If you get a chance, drop by the main servicearea and take a look at the progress !
Power Squadron Inspections
Nothing ruins a beautiful sunny boating day withguests on board like a Coast Guard inspection in themiddle of a busy channel. The Power Squadron hasonce again agreed to inspect your boat in the slip onSaturday, June 9th, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Takeadvantage of this free service, put the decal on yourboat, and rest easy this summer. Sign up sheets willbe at the office or at the Pilot House.
