Peshawar Dental College was established
in the year 2010. It is the sister Institute
of Peshawar Medical College and is
working under the guidance and control
of Prime Foundation Pakistan. The
Dean/Principal of the Dental College was
desirous of extending oral & dental health
care services to the poor and needy
people who have minimal access to the
health care services. So the Department
of Community and Preventive dentistry
was instructed to devise a plan for such
activities. Free Dental Camps, Oral health
surveys and awareness campaigns were
organized for this purpose. It was decided
as a policy that during these programs
underprivileged will be served on priority.
This decision was taken on the basis of a
report given in a “Pathway Survey of Oral
health in Pakistan” that 50% people have
dental caries and among these over 97%
do not have access to the oral health care
providers.
Within six months of the start of the
college, the Department of Community
and Preventive Dentistry in collaboration
with other departments of the College
organized an Oral and Dental Health
survey and awareness campaign in the
1st week of June 2011. During this
program various schools in
Peshawar were visited
where oral and
dental
health status was recorded by a team of
20 doctors of Peshawar Dental College,
trained to educate the kids and staff of
Schools on Oral Health Awareness. Over
500 students were examined. The
students and staff were given a
demonstration of proper brushing
techniques. They were also given free
fluoridated toothpastes and tooth
brushes. The students who required
dental treatment were given
appointments and were treated in
Peshawar Dental College and Hospital
free of charge.
Second activity was a free dental camp
that was arranged in the first week of July
2011. During this free dental camp 862
patients were examined and were given
the needed treatment. All the patients
were also provided with free facilities for
Hepatitis B and C screening tests, dental
X-Rays in addition to free
medicines,
fluoridated
tooth pastes
and
brushes. Students of Peshawar Dental
College were actively involved during the
free dental camp. They were given the
responsibility of promotion of oral health
and education of the participants. Dental
students made flow charts and painted
different awareness messages. The
students were trained how to bring
awareness about Oral Hygiene and Dental
Health within the community and to teach
proper brushing techniques to the
participants of such events. All the staff
of concerned departments worked
tirelessly throughout the day. After the
required treatments the
patients were given appointments if
further treatment was required.
Department of Community and
Preventive Dentistry also participated in a
“Free Dental Health Month” campaign
arranged by Colgate and was conducted
from October 24th to October 28th 2011
in Peshawar Dental College. Local schools
were visited to record the oral health
status of school going children. School
children attended during this program
were almost one thousand. All the
children were provided with
fluoridated toothpastes

On the 18th of January 2014, Saturday the students of Peshawar Medical College
had the good fortune to attend the guest lecture arranged for them by the
Students Literary Society of Peshawar Medical College. The esteemed guest
speaker was Syed Sabeeh ibne Siddique from Medinah University who
enlightened the attendees about “Contradictions and connections between Islam
and Westernization”. Dr. Imran Qureshi, Staff Incharge of Students Literary
Society highlighted the dilemma faced by the Muslim youth and introduced the
guest to the audience.
Syed Sabeeh Ibne siddique started with a brief introduction about himself, he
then went on to captivate the audience with his engaging remarks about how
to best understand the message of Islam by not taking it as a burden as only
then can one truly take to heart its teachings.
He also showed a report from Cheryl benard who wrote a research report
trying to explain how to change Islam. In summary in the report the
authoress breaks the Muslims into four groups namely the fundamentalists,
tradionalists, modernists, secularists and also defines them and their way
of life and perspectives of Islam. He also explained how they (the west)
brainwash the
Muslims
with their
objective
being to
change the
religion of
Islam. During
his
explanation of the research
report he tells about the strategies that the authoress has come up
with in an effort to stop the Islamic system; firstly by finding partners
for the promotion of democratic Islam.
He quoted that if you stand for nothing you fall for anything i.e. if
we don’t gain enough knowledge about our religion to defend it
against false beliefs we will not be able to counter their strategies.
Syed sabeeh said that to counter these strategies that attack our
hearts and minds we have to wake up and acknowledge this
threat.
In concluding his lecture Syed Sabeeh ibne siddique narrated a
few stories from his life in which people confronted him
regarding Islam and its teachings. After the guest lecture there
was a question and answer session and presenting of the
college crest to the guest by the Principal Dr. Sajjad.
The attendees of the lecture were truly inspired and gained a
tremendous amount of knowledge. The feedback from the
students was also positive and most of them expressed the
hope to have such lectures arranged for them again in the
future.
