On Beth Nielsen Chapman’s new release, “Uncovered” she rolls out a batch of premium songs she’s written but never recorded that have already been hits or covers by other artists. Most were top ten hits, seven of which topped the charts at #1. The title, “UnCovered” was suggested by none other than Bob Harris. “Once I heard that name I knew exactly what this record needed to be.” Recorded in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and her own “Tree House” studio in Nashville, “Uncovered” bursts open with a crystalline piano, which gives way into an infectious groove on “Simple Things”, with backing vocals by Kim Carnes (She’s Got Betty Davis Eyes). In fact, “Uncovered” features a number of amazing guest artists including legendary guitarist Duane Eddy on “Shine On Me”, a song Beth wrote with Waylon Jennings, which also features backing vocals by Waylon’s widow, artist Jessie Colter-Jennings. Vince Gill duets with Beth on “Here We Are”, a # 1 hit she and Vince wrote for Alabama. Darrell Scott sings and plays on “Maybe That’s All It Takes” a stunning ballad, which was a hit for Don Williams. Pam Tillis & Lorrie Morgan sing on “Five Minutes” , Lorrie’s first #1 hit. Then, Amy Grant along with Ruth Trimble & Eilidh Patterson sing on the stand out track “Pray” written with, and featuring guitar instrumentalist extraordinaire Muriel Andersen. “Almost Home”, a Mary Chapin Carpenter single from her greatest hits package “Party Doll”, was written by Chapin, Beth and longtime collaborator Annie Roboff who also co-produces several tracks on this collection. “Almost Home” features the rollicking background vocals of “Wine Women & Song” artists Gretchen Peters, Suzy Bogguss and Matraca Berg, alongside Bekka Bramlett who also appears playing blistering tambourine and backing vocals with George Marinelli’s electric guitar on “Meet Me Halfway”, the bluesy deeply groovy track written by Beth, Bonnie Raitt and Annie Roboff for Bonnie’s “Fundamental” release. The Scottish sessions co-produced with Phil Cunningham, feature top grade musicians including Duncan Chisholm, John McCusker, James Mackintosh, Euan Burton, and Matheu Watson. Legendary bassist and longtime sideman on Beth’s UK tours, former Fairport Convention member Martin Allcock plays on several tracks. Formed in 2000 to share a fascination with the improvisation and monophonic nature of Ornette Coleman’s earlier works, the Bristol-based four-piece can now boast a truly international fan base and the last two years have seen them take their cellophane masks half way round the world and back (it was the rhythm of movement and travel experienced on the road that gave way to the new album and inspired the title). Throughout this time, the line-up has remained the same with Portishead rhythm masters Jim Barr and Clive Deamer on bass and drums respectively, Pete Judge on trumpet and Jake McMurchie on saxophone. And all this despite other commitments for everyone, not least Deamer’s recruitment as Radiohead’s second live drummer in 2012. The band’s old friend and collaborator – and Portishead guitarist - Adrian Utley also returns to make a guest appearance with Bat for Lashes guitarist Tim Allen brought in to engineer the recording sessions. The use of guitar effects pedals and other electronic gizmos had become a big part of what the band do live, but until now had never been fully integrated into the recording process. As well as extensive use of delay by the horns, the rockiest track on the album, ‘Little Ease’ also features the trumpet routed through a distortion pedal, bought for a song on the way to the first day of recording (it also features on ‘Trope’). The saxophone is treated in a similar way, producing the Theremin-like pitch bends that can be heard on ‘Quiet’. This could lead you to think that ‘Lope & Antilope’ is an effects heavy, raucous album, but in fact the opposite would be more accurate. ‘Lope & Antilope’ is more textured than previous work, shifting from the atmospheric ambience of ‘Luposcope’ to the pulsing, almost Nordic menace of ’Viking Death Moped’ – but all the way through maintaining the trademark bass riffs that carry the album through giving it that quintessential ‘Get The Blessing’ Sound. iTunes Jazz 'Best Of 2013' #1 Seldom has a band on the British jazz scene created such a buzz before releasing an album, but Sons of Kemet have done just that. And they’ve continued to do so. A super-group of sorts led by clarinetist, saxophonist and composer Shabaka Hutchings with Oren Marshall on tuba and both Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford on drums, Sons of Kemet release their stunning debut album Burn. Although born in London, Hutchings spent most of his childhood in Barbados. On returning to the UK in 1999 he was soon heralded as an exceptional talent on the British jazz scene, not only playing with luminaries such as Soweto Kinch, Courtney Pine and The Heliocentrics but also being named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. However, he felt the music he was playing lacked the Caribbean slant of his background and thus, Sons of Kemet (Kemet is one of the first recognised names for ancient Egypt and its last Nubian king was called Shabaka) was born. It's partly the deployment of two drummers - and two powerhouse drummers at that - gives Sons of Kemet their compelling and infectious sound. Skinner and Rochford's visceral exchange of rhythmic ideas is an unforgettable, highly danceable experience. Throw into this one of the great wild cards of contemporary British music, Oren Marshall on tuba, and you have a wonderfully unorthodox configuration. A curiously addictive album that manages to appeal to both heart and mind, there is little to compare it with. He could have comfortably rested on his laurels for the remainder of 2013 following February's well-received New Veteran - released via his own production unit Riddimworks. The same can be said of US reggae producing triumvirate, Zion I Kings, who have already put out a superb Cornel Campbell project this summer.
