The Gamba Complex of Protected Areas in
southwestern Gabon is composed of four main
areas: Loango and Moukalaba-Doudou National
Parks, Rabi-Toucan and Gamba and its surround-
ings. Mammals are an important component
of the ecosystem of the Complex. There are a
number of well- publicized species, such as forest
elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, buffalo, and
hippopotamus. It was however not until the
1990s that assessments were first conducted to
gain a better understanding of the mammalian
diversity in the area. We recorded 39 species
of small mammals, including 9 shrews and 13
bats, and 71 species of medium-large mammals,
including the manatee, galagos, mongooses,
civets, golden cat, leopard and duikers. Among
the marine mammals, we included only those
living close to the coast and thus likely to be seen
by ecotourists visiting the Complex. The species
inventory being still incomplete, do not hesitate
to document through pictures and to report pos-
sible new species records and valuable observa-
tions to the Park or Wildlife authorities.
