This is your AutoAid Breakdown Recovery Document.Read this booklet and the schedule carefully and keepthem in a safe place.

This insurance is written in English and allcommunications about it will be in English.Unless we have agreed otherwise with you, inwriting,this insurance is governed by English Law.

If the vehicle that you or your legal spouse or civil partnerare driving breaks down, call the 24-hour Rescue ControlCentre on free phone 0800 3284439 or 01277 720700.Our trained staff will deal with your request quickly,avoiding any further stress or worry.

Please have the following information available whenyou phone.

■ Your document number.■ The phone number (including the area code) you are

calling from.■ The location of the broken-down vehicle, including

road numbers or names and landmarks.■ The registration number, make, model and colour.■ Details of how you will pay the recovery firm.

Please stay with the vehicle until a rescue vehicle arrives.

These guidance notes areto help you to understand

 your insurance. They do

not form part of thecontract. In all situationsthe guidance notes must be read with the full text of your document.

Our AutoAid helplineis open 24 hours a day,365 days a year and will

help you to arrangeassistance if the vehiclebreaks down.

 When you phone the AutoAid 24-hour helpline,please make sure youhave the informationshown opposite.

 You will have to pay for costs and expenses.

 We will then refund any amounts covered by thisinsurance as soon as wereceive the invoices,receipts and a filled inclaim form and agree to

 your claim.

We, us, our – Equity Red Star.

Equity Red Star – is made up of the Lloyd’s underwriters

who have insured you under this contract. Eachunderwriter is only liable for their own share of the risk and not for any other’s share. You can ask us for thenames of the underwriters and the share of the risk eachhas taken on.

The administrators – Equity Red Star Services Ltd.

You, your – the person named as ‘the insured’ in

the schedule.

The schedule – provides evidence that your insurance isin force and shows details such as your name, documentnumber and period of insurance.

Document of insurance – this booklet together with theschedule, form your AutoAid Breakdown RecoveryInsurance Document.

Period of insurance – the period of time covered by thisinsurance (as shown in the schedule).

Breakdown – mechanical or electrical breakdown(failures or breakages), flat batteries, punctures, lack of fuel, lost ignition keys or damage which is caused by anaccident, vandalism or theft and results in you not being

able to drive the vehicle.

The vehicle – a saloon car, hatchback, estate car,car derived van or motorcycle over 150 c.c's. Motorisedcaravans can be covered provided they are under 2.5tons gross vehicle weight and with an engine capacity of no more than 2500 cc.

Territorial limits – within the mainland of England,

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

If the vehicle cannot be driven as a result of a breakdown,that happens while you or your legal spouse or civilpartner are driving, we will refund the costs shown belowas long as they are as a direct result of the breakdown andare paid immediately after the breakdown.

We will provide this cover for any breakdown, and any

costs involved with the breakdown, which occur duringthe period of insurance and within the territorial limits.

Emergency roadside repairsWe will refund call-out fees and labour charges torepair the vehicle at the roadside and so allow your journey to continue. If the vehicle cannot be repaired atthe scene of the breakdown, we will refund the cost of taking the vehicle, you and up to 5 passengers from theplace where the vehicle has broken down to the nearest

available garage.Recovery of the vehicle and its passengersWe will refund the cost of taking the vehicle, you and upto 5 passengers from the place where the vehicle has broken-down to any one place you choose.

Alternative travel or Emergency overnight hotelaccommodation

If the vehicle breaks down while it is more than 25 miles

from your home and it cannot be repaired at theroadside or at a garage during the same day and is notrecovered to your home or destination, we will refund

the cost of onward travel arrangements or emergencyovernight hotel accommodation.We will refund:■ the cost of alternative travel (by road or rail) so that

you and up to 5 passengers can finish your journeyor return home; or

■ the cost of one night's hotel accommodation for youand up to 5 passengers (The amount we will refundwill only be for the rooms. We will not pay anyamount for meals or drinks).

We will also refund the cost of one person travelling byroad or rail to collect the vehicle from where it is being repaired, after the repairs have been finished.

Home breakdownsIf the vehicle breaks down at your home or within onemile of your home, we will only refund up to £65 for:■ call-out fees and labour charges needed to start

the vehicle; or■ costs involved in taking the vehicle to the nearest

available garage.

Theft or vandalism

If the vehicle is stolen and recovered, or cannot bedriven as a result of damage caused by vandalism, wewill refund the cost of taking the vehicle to your homeaddress or to a repairer of your choice.

Caravan and trailers

If your vehicle breaks down any attached caravan orsmall trailer will be entitled to the same service as thevehicle as long as it is attached to the vehicle by a

standard 50 millimetre (2 inch) towing coupling.

Trailers can only be covered if they are not more than 3metres (10 feet) long and used for private purposes.

Toll authority fees

If the breakdown occurs in a Toll authority area, we willrefund the cost of any Toll authority vehicle used torecover the vehicle.

If the vehicle is not repaired at theroadside or taken to

 your home or 

destination, we willrefund the cost of alternative travel or onenight’s accommodationfor you and up to 5passengers in a hotelnear to where the

 vehicle has brokendown.

The most we will refundif the vehicle breaksdown within one mileof your home addressis £65.

 We will refund the cost of repairing or recovering any caravanor small trailer which isproperly attached to

the vehicle.

This insurance does not cover the following.■ The cost of any parts, components or materials used to

repair the vehicle.

■ The cost of any repairs not carried out at the roadside.

This insurance does not cover the following.

1. If the vehicle is recovered by sea or air, any amountwhich is more than the cost of taking the vehicle tothe nearest port or airport.

2. The cost of taking the vehicle and its passengers tomore than one address after any one breakdown.

3. The cost of recovering the vehicle and its passengers if the vehicle can be repaired within a reasonable periodof time at or near the place where it has broken-down.

4. Any costs or expenses if the breakdown is covered by

any other insurance or recovery service.

5. Loss of or damage to the vehicle or its contents, orany valuables carried in the vehicle.

6. Any recovery charges apart from recovery to thenearest available garage if the vehicle breaks down atyour home or within one mile of your home.

7. Any request for service if the vehicle has been used(from the time you bought it) for private hire, publichire, racing, rally, pacemaking or in any contest orspeed trial or any rigorous reliability testing.

8. Any request for service if the vehicle is off-road orcannot be reached due to snow, mud, sand or flood.

9. The repair or recovery of your vehicle if it breaksdown at the premises of a motor trader or repairer.

These generalexclusions apply tothe whole of your insurance.

 Accident, injury, loss,damage, direct or indirect loss or legalliability occurring as aresult of the itemsspecified opposite arenot covered.

10. Any results of war, invasion, act of foreign enemy,hostilities (whether war be declared or not), civilwar, rebellion, revolution, military or usurpedpower.

11. Direct or indirect loss, damage or liability caused by, contributed to or arising from:■ ionising radiation or contamination from any

radioactive nuclear fuel, or from any nuclearwaste from burning nuclear fuel;

■ the radioactive, toxic, explosive or otherdangerous property of any explosive nuclearassembly or nuclear part of that assembly; or

■ pressure waves caused by aircraft and other

flying objects.

12. Any liability, loss or damage arising directly orindirectly from acts of terrorism, as defined in theUK Terrorism Act 2000.

1. We will only provide the cover described in thisinsurance if:■ you have met all the terms and conditions in this

document of insurance;■ the information you have given to us is, as far as

you know, correct and complete. (Any paymentmade under this insurance will be based on theoriginal information given to us).

If you have failed to give us complete and accurate

information or have not met the terms andconditions, this could lead to your claim beingdenied or the insurance not being valid.

2. This insurance only applies to you and cannot betransferred to anyone else.

3. You may only have one document of insurance inforce at any one time.

4. Roadside help or recovery will only be provided ifyou or the driver stays with the vehicle until arescue vehicle arrives.

 We will only cover you

if you have met all of these conditions and allthe information given tous is true and complete.

5. If a claim is made which you or anyone acting onyour behalf knows is false, fraudulent orexaggerated, we will not pay the claim and coverunder this insurance will end.

6. You must take all reasonable steps to prevent a breakdown, and you and your legal spouse or civilpartner must not drive any vehicle whichis in an unsafe and unroadworthy condition.

7. We may cancel the insurance by sending 7 days’notice, by recorded delivery, to your last knownaddress. We will refund the part of your premiumwhich applies to the remaining period of the

insurance.

8. You must carry a roadworthy spare tyre with yourvehicle at all times, except where one is not fitted asstandard manufacturers equipment. If your vehicle isfitted with locking wheel nuts you must also carrythe key/tool to remove them.

9. You must keep your vehicle properly maintained

and serviced.

10. You may cancel this insurance, without giving us areason, by sending us written notice and returningthe insurance documents within the first 14 days ofthe policy, or (if later) within 14 days of youreceiving the insurance documents. This is knownas the withdrawal period. We will return anypremium paid subject to a minimum premium of

 £15 (plus IPT) for the number of days for which wehave provided cover. After this time, if you havenot made any claims in the current period ofinsurance, we will allow a proportion of yourpremium to be taken off any future premium, or wewill pay you a refund based on our short period ratesas shown below.

 We will not pay 

a claim which isfalse, fraudulent or exaggerated.

 You must keep the vehicle in a safe androadworthy condition.

 We may cancel theinsurance by sending

 you 7 days’ notice by recorded delivery. If wedo so, you are entitledto a refund of part of 

 your premium.

 You may cancel thisinsurance and beentitled to a refund if 

 you have not made aclaim and you returnthe document of 

insurance.

■ If you have any cause to complain about our

 breakdown insurance, or us please write to the ChiefExecutive of Equity Red Star. When you do this,quote your insurance document number, which is onyour policy schedule. Send your complaint to:Equity Red Star, Library House, New Road,Brentwood, Essex CM14 4GD.

■ After this action, if you are still not satisfied with theway a complaint has been dealt with, you may askthe Policyholder and Market Assistance department

at Lloyd's to review your case.■ The address is: Policyholder and Market Assistance,

Lloyd's Market Services, One Lime Street, London,EC3M 7HA.

■ Having followed this procedure your complaint can be referred to the Financial Ombudsman Service(FOS). The address is The Financial OmbudsmanService, South Quay Plaza, 183 Marsh Wall, LondonE14 9SR

(This procedure does not affect your rights to takelegal action if necessary).

■ FINANCIAL SERVICES COMPENSATIONSCHEME

As we are members of the Financial ServicesCompensation Scheme (FSCS), you may be entitledto compensation under the scheme if we cannot payout all valid claims under this insurance. This

depends on the type of policy you have and thecircumstances of the claim. The scheme will cover90% of the claim with no upper limit. For types of insurance you must have by law (such as third partyinsurance for motor claims), the scheme will coverthe whole claim. You can get more information aboutthe scheme from the FSCS or you can visit theirwebsite at www.fscs.org.uk.
