Bus Shelter Badly DamagedFrom a post by Amy Ray on the Montford Listserve, May 29, 2018.I am sorry to report that an apparently drunk driver just hit a parked car south of the Montford/Cullowhee bus shelter on the northbound side of Montford and pushed the truck into the shelter and then to the retaining wall behind the shelter. The car also ran into the shelter. The bus shelter sustained significant damage. Police are there now. The driver fled on foot on Cullowhee headed west. With all of the foot traffic in the area it is a miracle no one was hurt.

Hopefully, the police can identify the driver through the license plate.

Thanks and stay safe, everyone. Sooner or later we need to do more to slow traffic on Montford.

Editor’s Note: Watch for updates on montford.org as we work with the City to repair the shelter and replace the historic panel.

Angel’s Return HomeAsheville Resident Publishes Novel Featuring Asheville Today and Thomas Wolfe’s Asheville in the Early 1900’s.

Jim Funk has just completed writing and publishing his second novel and third book. Jim and wife Marilyn are residents of Asheville.

“Angel’s Return Home” draws on Jim’s extensive education, and diverse career, to entertain readers with a refreshing, new, and creative form of storytelling.

The story takes place primarily in Asheville, favorably portraying today’s Asheville, as well as Thomas Wolfe’s Asheville of the early 1900’s.

“Asheville is a very special place for me,” Mr. Funk said. “I became fascinated by Thomas Wolfe’s life story, and the Asheville surrounding Wolfe’s legend. So, I combined those interests in a fictional story that brings Thomas Wolfe back to hometown Asheville.”

Characters are fictional, but residents will see an unmistakable resemblance to people and places they know.

Robert Morrow encounters the Ghost of epic American writer Thomas Wolfe, wandering endless—for over 75 years, ‘lost’ within confines of Riverside Cemetery in hometown Asheville, NC. Fame and fortune already bestowed upon him, serenity he’s still seeking. Ghost of lost flesh, why has this web been woven?

Which of us is not a Ghost, among a world of Ghosts? What is real? What isn’t? And, who are we to know?

Robert and Ghost work together, as friends—they find ‘memory’ a key to an unfound door. Ghost Tom revisits hometown Asheville, where he became an iconic legend. Robert and Ghost Tom revisit their childhood. After all, childhood matters!

Within our dreams, we find our self, worthy person all the more. We wake again, shreds of memory do return, saying: Come back again! Come home! For home, we never leave.

Elections, Registering, Voting and Working the Polls in MontfordBill EakinsAs your Chief Judge in our Montford polling place for many years, I want first of all to thank the voters of Montford. WE ALWAYS HAVE THE HIGHEST TURNOUT OF ANY POLLING PLACE IN BUNCOMBE COUNTY. That speaks well of you, the voters of our Precinct 2.1. You care, you show up, you make our system work.

This year the General Election is Tuesday, November 6. Polls open promptly at 6:30 a.m. and close promptly at 7:30 p.m. If a voter is online at 7:30 p.m., that voter will be permitted to vote. All poll workers are required (and happy) to wait as long as it takes for everyone online at poll closing time to vote. In a presidential year that may be up to an hour. Curbside voting is available for the handicapped on the Montford Avenue side of the building. Driving over a hose rings a bell inside the polling place and one of the poll workers will come out. Over a long day with school buses, cars, etc. the hose can become moved or otherwise malfunction. For that reason, a Board of Elections number is posted on a sign at the curbside voting spot. There is also a handicapped parking space next to the curbside voting space. Voter parking is available on the Courtland Avenue side of the polling place.

Over years of trial and error and limited by the location of a small number of outlets for equipment, location, and accessibility of exits, school security issues, etc., we have configured the polling place to allow the longest indoor line space can accommodate. We do not want voters deterred from voting by inclement weather.

Though we poll workers do our best to make the process as quick and pleasant as possible, any general election will have sometimes in the day when there are waits. To avoid them you may want to vote early. Early voting begins this year October 18 and continues until 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 3. Locations and times

are available on the Buncombe County website www.buncombecounty.org under “elections”. Also, voters with legitimate reason may apply for absentee ballots starting

September 7. Voter registration ends at 5:30 p.m. October 12. All necessary forms and information can be found on the website.

Last, we are always looking for more help at the polling place. The pay is a little better than jury service. Hours at the polls, for set up and for training are a commitment. The positive side is you. It is a pleasure to see our friends and neighbors. It is a pleasure to make the process, our process in our system of government, work fairly and efficiently. If you would like to work the polls contact your political party leader or go to the elections part of the Buncombe County website.
