All lights at green! With this positive headline, we wish to wel-come our esteemed POLYTEC WORLD readers to this year’s final issue of our company journal, while at the same time presenting an extremely interesting reference project from our non-auto-motive segment. We have made a multimillion investment at our production plant in Ebensee (Austria) for the fully automatic pro-duction of green and black, returnable transport boxes for our customer IFCO. In future, when running at full capacity, the plant will turn out an average of one plastic box every two seconds.

Since July 2015, POLYTEC TOOLING has augmented our group portfolio with its vast expertise in the field of tool development and production, and we have reports on both this company and the progress being made with regard to the construction of our new plant in Tianjin, China. Spring 2016 will see the begin of serial production of transmission oil pans in the People’s Republic, thereby echoing the success along the entire value added chain achieved by our plant in Lohne, Germany, which started produc-tion in May 2015. You can follow this project from pre-develop-ment to logistics on pages 22-23.

Furthermore, we are also proud of the fact that in this edition we can showcase two projects, in the course of which our own material developments have attained serial production maturity. The first of these is PUR RRIM Lightweight, an innovative mate-rial that has enabled a 23 per cent cut in the weight of the rear bumper of the new Porsche GT3 RS. The second is VICS, an intel-ligent fibre compound combination, which is being used for the hybrid underbody of the Jaguar F-Type AWD in order to provide a significant increase in mechanical capacity in combination with low weight.

Our everyday working activities are characterised by many other exciting projects. Accordingly, I am already looking forward to presenting them to you in upcoming editions of POLYTEC WORLD and would like to also take this opportunity to wish you a joyous and restful festive season, and a positive start to the New Year.

Yours sincerely,

FRIEDRICH HUEMER, CEO

The tool making company based in Thannhausen in Bavaria, which has now become part of the POLYTEC GROUP, was founded in 1960 and since 1983 has had a particular focus on the pro-duction of high-tech, injection mould-ing tools. On July 1st 2015, the tool specialist commenced operations under the name POLYTEC TOOLING GmbH & Co. KG and now greatly enriches the scope of group value added.

Markus Huemer, the POLYTEC GROUP’s dep-uty chairperson and COO explains the back-ground to the takeover as follows: “Tool construction and production influence the competitiveness of our components and therefore tool design know-how is of major importance. The take-over has bolstered our internal resources and we have obtained experienced personnel. Moreover, the share of in-house production and the protection of intellectual property have both been strengthened. As a consequence, we have extended our value added as a sizeable con-tribution to the development and manu-facture of increasingly complex product solutions. Accordingly, the modification and expansion of current production capacity is planned in line with our needs.”

TOOL MAKING IS A CORE COMPETENCEApart from individual consulting regard-ing optimum tool construction, POLYTEC TOOLING’s core competences include the development and production of top quality prototypes and reliable, serial processing

tools for technically demanding automo-tive components. The bulk of the compa-ny’s sales revenues (2014: approximately EUR 3.6 million) derives from one- and two-component injection moulding tools. Among the highlights are moulds for intake manifolds, water boxes and air duct parts employing 2C technology, which involves the use of turning, turntable and index plate techniques. In addition to aluminium, pre-series tools, steel is the primary mate-rial utilised in production. Foam tools for PUR-RRIM production processes also round off the POLYTEC TOOLING product portfo-lio to perfection.

Stefan Lewald, the POLYTEC TOOLING Plant Manager: “My team of 25 and I are all pleased to be new members of the POLYTEC GROUP. With our extensive range of expe-rience in the tool making sector, we aug-ment the group’s portfolio to perfection. The planned investments will also serve to further supplement our competences, which allows us to look forward with motivation to a shared, successful future.”

STRUCTURAL CHALLENGESThe extremely ambitious schedule leading up to the SOP of the first two projects in spring 2016 required a highly efficient construction phase if the plant were to be occupied in November 2015. Following a time-consum-ing audit, efficient local partners were taken on board. Bencer assumed the project man-agement, which was planned down to the minutest detail, and the general contractor S+E took over the building work.

The loose alluvial soil that is typical of the area around Tianjin represented an addi-tional challenge for the entire team and in order to achieve the required floor load bear-ing capacity of 3,000 kg/m2, the POLYTEC plant stands on 123 piles, which are all anchored in the ground at a depth of 16m.

Moreover, not only are the piles integrated under the floor plate, but also a water tank with a volume of 10,000 m3, which in future will

feed the sprinkler system from below and thus provide modern fire protection in the plant.

FULLY EQUIPPEDA total of five, fully electric injection mould-ing machines with a clamping force of 80t to 450t and the related automation technol-ogy will be installed in the plant by the end of this year and prepared for the SOP and annual output of 480,000 transmission oil pans and 550,000 oil separators.

In the meantime, the core POLYTEC AUTO PARTS Tianjin team consisting of a plant manager, managerial assistant, tool engineer and a key account manager has been aug-mented with a quality and a logistics man-ager. In addition, two experienced expats from our injection moulding plant in Lohne (Germany) are looking after the tool tech-nology and mechatronics areas, and train-ing local employees on the spot in order to ensure smooth production procedures.

Apart from the two projects in the run-up phase, in future it is planned that Tianjin will manufacture intake manifolds and cylinder head covers. In the medium-term, the pro-duction of non-automotive components and high-tech, engine compartment parts for the Integrated Acoustic Solutions product area is also foreseen.

LONG-TERM COMMITMENTThe architectural design of the newly constructed, value retaining building is based on the best practice example of the POLYTEC plant in Wolmirstedt, Germany. The hall, office, engineering and production facilities have been planned using a mod-ular system, which is capable of accom-modating future expansion. Furthermore, POLYTEC also has the option of doubling the area of its site in Tianjin to a total of 24,000 m2 at any time.

THE NEW POLYTEC PLANT IN THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC IS GETTING REAdY FOR SERIAL PROdUCTION

Following complex approval processes in connection with environmental technology and fire protection, land purchase and certification, the construction of the new production plant commenced in spring 2015 on the 12,000 m2-site in the TEDA West industrial park in Tianjin.

These central issues have led us to a new and uniform understanding of management, which is encapsulated by the POLYTEC Leadership Principles.

Employees using their own initiative in an organisation with a culture of open dialogue, the ongoing advancement of personnel

through target-oriented assignments and the systematic demand for performance play a major role in this connection.

In the practice-related POLYTEC Leader-ship Academy, which represents a mod-ular training programme for managerial staff and since July 2015 has been running throughout the group with the support of the Institut für Führung, the focus is on the active implementation of these principles during day-to-day managerial activities.

A NON-AUTOMOTIVE PROJECT CREATES FRESH dRIVE!

The location in Upper Austria’s salzkammergut region with its roughly 190 employees and 54.000 m2 of floor space has been part of the POLYTEC GROUP since 2011. Originally the plant focused on the production of leisure furniture and logistics boxes, but in recent years it has become increasingly involved in the coverage of the existing capacity requirements of the PLAsTICs business unit with injection moulded, automotive components. It has thus moved closer to achieving the future aim of being responsible for the production of complex, injection-moulded items for both the automotive and non-automotive sectors. In line with this aim, the production location has recently been further upgraded for a far-reaching, non-automotive project involving the manufacture of a new generation of ten types of returnable transport containers for fruit and vegetables.

Friedrich Huemer, the POLYTEC GROUP CEO: “All the parties involved profited from this type of comprehensive and open partner-ship, which in recent years had been encour-aged by the network of the Confederation of Upper Austrian Industry. We are delighted to have been able to cooperate with two reli-able, local partners on this new contract, especially as this enabled us to use short logistical and communication routes in order to push ahead efficiently with this important non-automotive project.”

MAJOR CONSOLIDATION OF THE EBENSEE PRODUCTION LOCATIONThese opinions are confirmed by Markus Huemer, the POLYTEC GROUP’s COO: “Owing to its historical character as a non-automo-tive location, Ebensee offers free space that at other facilities one would have had to cre-ate. Moreover, the geographical proximity to our Bavarian customer and not least the avail-able production infrastructure predestined the plant for this level of output. A solid basis for the strengthening of the location was also provided by the close cooperation with the local works council. Accordingly, in combina-tion with existing automotive business, the plant’s existence is secured in the long-term.”

POLYTEC GROUP INVESTMENTS IN THE EBENSEE LOCATIONIFCO, the Germany-based supplier of international logistics services is a long-term POLYTEC customer, and earlier this year it reaffirmed its confidence in the group’s non-automotive competence by

awarding the Ebensee location a contract for the production of a new box generation (pleases see the following double pages for details). In response, POLYTEC has invested in nine new injection moulding machines and high-end automation technology for a total of fourteen production lines. This

will mean that in future, when working at full capacity the Ebensee location will turn out an average of one plastic box every two seconds. The production of the individual tools for the new machines commenced in August 2015.

WHETHER FOR THE INTERIOR, EXTE-RIOR OR POWER TRAIN, AUTOMO-TIVE PART BUSINESS REMAINS AN IMPORTANT VALUE ADDED MOTORIrrespective of all these new developments, Ebensee will continue to maintain its proven production of injection moulded automotive components. For example, some 400,000 tailgate trims are manufactured annually in the Salzkammergut for the Audi A3, Q5 and A4 Avant models.

Furthermore, various types of covers for BMW and Audi engines are also in produc-tion in Ebensee and additional automotive projects are in the planning phase.

REALISATION WITH REGIONAL PARTNERSImmense time pressure and the highly com-plex production lines confronted POLYTEC with a major challenge, which was mastered with the help of strong, regional partners.ENGEL from Schwertberg in Upper Austria, the global injection moulding technology market leader, assumed responsibility for the new production machinery and part of the automation. In addition, POLYTEC suc-ceeded in obtaining the services of another highly qualified Upper Austrian partner for the project in the shape of the tool mak-ing and automation specialist HAIDLMAIR from Nußbach.

A NON-AUTOMOTIVE PROJECT AT THE EBENSEE PLANT BEARS FRUIT

IFCO, the Germany-based supplier of international logistics services and returnable transport containers, is a long-term POLYTEC customer and has underlined its trust in the group’s non-automotive competence by awarding the PLAsTICs business unit’s location in Ebensee with an order for the production of a new box generation called GREEN LIFT LOCK. The boxes are to be used to carry fruit and vegetables from the producer to the consumer markets.

In roughly four months from the allocation of the contract, a multi-million investment was implemented at the Ebensee plant and the production facilities modified to accommo-date the highly automated manufacture of the plastic boxes. The returnable containers are made from tough plastic and with regard to durability and cost efficiency are virtually unsurpassable. This reusable packing system can be fully recycled, offers hygienic and safe protection for the fresh goods and reduces storage demands through simple and secure stacking.

The signal green and black boxes are pro-duced in ten variations with various base areas and heights for loads of 5 to 20 kg. Each of the differing box types has seven

parts (floor, 4 sides, 2 handles) and in future the assembly of these components, the printing, labelling and subsequent stacking of the boxes will take place fully automat-ically on fourteen production lines. Initial, semi-automatic manufacturing commenced in August 2015.

PRODUCTION LOCATION PREPARATIONSIn order to create the ideal preconditions for the new order, the hall floor in the future pro-duction area was completely renovated. This involved the tricky problem of maintaining existing production with uniform high qual-ity, while the existing injection moulding machines were adjusted and structural alter-ations were undertaken.

In addition to the moving of the tool mak-ing and maintenance departments, mas-sive infrastructural adjustments were made, which ranged from the flow of materials and power to the injection moulding machines, to tool cooling and the suitable compressed air supply. For example, in order to secure a suitable level of cooling in future, a new well was bored and a large part of the water sup-ply system including pumps, heat exchangers, controls and piping was renewed.

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS - A PRODUCTION START IN 13 WEEKS!During semi-automatic production, the boxes are assembled and stacked manually, while printing and labelling is already auto-matic. The start-up of the first semi-auto-matic machines and the delivery of the first boxes took place in mid-August, only thirteen weeks after the contractual allocation.

Serial output using the first fully automatic line followed at the end of November and subsequently one additional, fully auto-mated line will start production every week. By mid-March 2016, the returnable boxes will be produced fully automatically on a total of fourteen lines.

INTERIM REPORTQ3 2015GROUP RESULTS

During the first nine months of 2015, the consolidated sales revenues of the POLYTEC GROUP rose by 30.5% to EUR 465.5 mil-lion. This figure includes an earnings con-tribution of approximately EUR 82.3 million from the two Dutch plants in Roosendaal and Putte acquired at the end of November 2014. If this acquisitive effect is excluded, organic sales growth of EUR 26.6 million or 7.5% results. In the third quarter, this was

again driven in particular by the marked rise in sales of passenger cars in the small series segment.

Group EBIT was almost doubled in the first nine months of 2015 to EUR 26.7 million. In addition to the earnings contribution from the locations in the Netherlands, the acqui-sition of the property portfolio with a value of EUR 4.7 million previously held by Huemer

Holding GmbH had a positive impact on the operating result.

In the first nine months of 2015, the EBIT margin amounted to 5.7% (Q1-Q3 2014: 3.8%). The EBIT margin in the third quar-ter totalled 5.5%. As compared to last year, this represents an improvement of 1.7 per-centage points. As a result of a fall in prices, the material cost ratio fell by 1.9 percentage points to 47.9%.

The financial result amounted to EUR -3.1 million (Q1-Q3 2014: EUR -0.8 million). This change was due largely to the inter-est expense derived from the promissory note issued at the end of September 2014. The POLYTEC GROUP’s tax rate at the end of the third quarter of 2015 stood at 23.8%. The group’s tax rate for the whole of 2014 came to 24.9%. In the first nine months of 2015, the group generated a net profit of 18.0 million (Q1-Q3 2014: EUR 10.0 million). This corresponds with earnings per share of EUR 0.80 (Q1-Q3 2014: EUR 0.43).

Comparision of the group sales and EBIT margin in the previous four quarters with Q3 2015

Work started immediately on the construc-tion of a special jig for the simulation of the desired temperature and pressure loads, and thus the creation of a reliable testing envi-ronment. At the same time, in a move paral-lel to the development and testing phase at POLYTEC ELASTOFORM in Marchtrenk, field testing was initiated at a leading steel man-ufacturer and logistics company.

WHY STORE COILS WEIGHING TONNES ON PLASTIC PARTS?In the case of both high-quality, steel sheet for the automotive industry and alumin-ium sheet, it is essential that the raw mate-rial remains unblemished. Every metre that cannot be used for the finished product due to indentations caused by incorrect storage represents a serious loss. Moreover, when an aluminium coil is stored on an under-lay of the same material, it is frequently the case that the first fifteen windings are unsuitable for the manufacturing process. With a diameter of up to 2,400 mm, this constitutes material wastage of over 100 m.

Conversely, storage on mats made from TECTHAN® polyurethane reduces these losses to a minimum.

In recent years, POLYTEC INDUSTRIAL has completed numerous successful projects that assist the correct storage and safe

transport of coils. For example, the use of TECTHAN® polyurethane prevents abrasive corrosion and thus protects valuable metres of this first class material.

HOLISTIC SOLUTIONS FROM POLYTEC INDUSTRIALHigh-quality sheet is cold rolled, while alu-minium coils leave the mill with a tempera-ture of around 150°C. As the sensitive coil cannot be simply placed on the ground to cool off, protective storage is especially important in this phase. Our heat-resistant parts made from TECTHAN® polyurethane facilitate a smooth production sequence, as the coils do not have to remain in the plant for cooling. Instead, they can be placed on the plastic mats immediately and trans-ported to their storage location.

INSPIRATION BEATS PERSPIRATION

At the beginning of 2015, POLYTEC INDUsTRIAL received a customer enquiry, which with regard to the heat resistance of polyurethane elastomers entailed a technological quantum leap. The target was 150°C in combination with loads of up to 40t. To date, the limit for polyurethane elastomers was around 80°C, but nonetheless the developers at the location in Marchtrenk, Upper Austria did not break out in a cold sweat.

INFOCoil is the word used for metal strip and wire windings and the technical term applied to rolls of steel and steel wire. Strip coils are used frequently for the transport of steel and alloys from the manufacturers to the processing plants (e.g. in the automotive industry). Coils produced in rolling mills can have weights of up to 45 t.

In the cars market segment, which accounts for the major share of sales in the POLYTEC GROUP, as compared to the same period of the previous year sales rose by 34.3% to EUR 313.1 million. This sizeable increase was due in part to the sales revenue contribution from both of the Dutch plants acquired in the fourth quarter of 2014. The largest relative growth derived from the customers Daimler Car, Volvo Car and Jaguar/Land Rover. VW Car, which is the car customer providing the larg-

By the end of the third quarter of 2015, the group’s total assets had risen by EUR 45.9 million to EUR 469.9 million. This was due pri-marily to an increase in fixed assets of around EUR 104.1 million. The bulk of this figure (EUR 87.3 million) derived from the purchase of the property portfolio held previously by Huemer Holding GmbH. Conversely, cash and cash equivalents fell by EUR 67.1 million, mainly as a consequence of the payment of the pur-chase price for the property portfolio, corpo-

As compared to the same period of the pre-vious year, sales revenues in the commer-cial vehicles segment were up by 27.2% at EUR 111.0 million. On the one hand, this was due to the acquisitions in the Netherlands (new customer DAF Truck) and on the other, higher VW Truck sales revenues.

Sales revenues in the non-automotive seg-ment were 14.4% higher than the compara-ble figure for 2014 at EUR 41.4 million. The sales of transport boxes, which are manufac-tured at the Ebensee plant, were also raised further in the third quarter of 2015. rate acquisitions, repayment of a loan and the payment of the dividend.

The equity ratio as at September 30th 2015 was 0.8 percentage points higher than that in the previous quarter and stood at 33.2%. As compared to the balance sheet date of Decem-ber 31st 2014, the equity ratio at the end of the third quarter was 0.8 percentage points lower. This was due mainly to the initial consolidation of the POLYTEC real estate group.

from non-cash, purchase price shares. Of this sum, EUR 57.5 million emanated from the purchase price of the property portfolio. Detailed explanations of the impact of the acquisitions in the period from January to September 2015 are provided in the Notes.

As compared to the balance sheet date of December 31st 2014, net debt rose by EUR 97.0 million to EUR 108.8 million. The main driver in this connection was the financing of the purchase of the property portfolio. In addi-tion, corporate acquisitions and investments in POLYTEC GROUP fixed assets also contributed to this sizeable increase.

POLYTEC SHARE PRICE dEVELOPMENT

OUTLOOK

As compared to last year, Group workforce numbers (including leasing personnel) at the end of the third quarter of 2015 had

increased by 725. This rise was due primarily to the integration of the two Dutch plants at the beginning of December 2014. Other

small corporate acquisitions and the new foundation of the Chinese plant also con-tributed to the higher employees numbers.

Assuming a stable business cycle, the man-agement of the POLYTEC GROUP forecasts consolidated sales of more than EUR 600 million for the complete fiscal year 2015. As the substantial sales growth underlying

these expectations is backed by the full-year consolidation of the acquired two Dutch plants and the noticeable organic growth based on the launch of series pro-duction for new products. The earnings

figures should improve significantly. EBIT of significantly more than EUR 30 million to be expected.

A DEMANDING BEAUTYIrrespective of the surrounding conditions, the very latest technologies employed in the Jaguar F-Type ensure perfect road holding and an important role in this regard is played by the underbody construction. POLYTEC designed a convincing lightweight solution for this purpose using a material combina-tion composed of lightweight reinforced thermoplastic (LWRT), which minimises the weight of the structure, and glass mat ther-moplastic (GMT) on the sides for the provi-sion of the necessary rigidity.

COOL HEADS FOR A HOT PROBLEMThe ultimate test f or any fast car is the Nür-burgring and a masterly performance was required from POLYTEC’s development team in order that the Jaguar’s underbody would emit sufficient heat following a high-speed run. Using the new VICS material, strength-ened ventilation slits proved to be the answer. This sandwich comprised of a thermoplastic

matrix and woven glass fibres in a so-called organo sheet, provides pinpoint-accurate reinforcement of the backing material and can be pressed with LWRT and GMT in a sin-gle production step. In addition, VICS is so light that it has a barely noticeable effect on the weight of the component and the integration of the reinforced parts into the underbody solution also means that no addi-tional parts require assembly, which brings both optical and cost efficiency advantages.

THE NEXT EPISODE FOLLOWSSince October 2015, some 500 of these advanced underbody covers have been com-ing off the production line at our plant in Roosendaal in the Netherlands every month. This adds up to a yearly total of 6,000 pieces, which is soon to be tripled, as Jaguar Land Rover has also commissioned POLYTEC with the fitting of the standard version of the rear wheel driven F-Type with this under-body solution.

In 2013, POLYTEC accepted the challenge of developing an underbody solution for the all-wheel drive version of the Jaguar F-Type, which at that time was in the design phase. since January 2015, this dynamic sports car has been offering the ultimate driving expe-rience on Europe’s roads and is also the first car to be fitted with POLYTEC’s innovative VICs material on a serial production basis.

INFOVICS is an acronym for Vari-able In-moulded Composite Sandwich and is an innovative combina-tion of a thermoplastic matrix core with carbon or glass fibre reinforcement. The resultant manufactured parts demonstrate considerably enhanced mechanical properties in combination with lower weight. As compared to steel, weight reductions of up to 50 per cent are possible.

The new 911 GT 3 RS brings pure motor sport technology to the roads through the strictest demands with regard to aerodynamics and design

AS dEMONSTRATEd BY THE NEW PORSCHE 911 GT 3 RS WITH A REAR BUMPER MAdE FROM PUR RRIM LIGHTWEIGHT

Lightweight construction is becoming an increasingly important factor in automotive manufacture, as it lowers fuel con-sumption and thus reduces CO2 emissions, which makes cars more environment-friendly. Above all, these facts apply to cars with a performance that borders on professional racing and therefore holistic, lightweight construction solutions were a core issue with regard to the current Porsche 911 generation.

Plastics demonstrate their advantages clearly in the lightweight construction area and score owing to their low density, offer of design freedom and diverse pos-sibilities for functional integration. In the case of the rear bumper of the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the PUR RRIM Lightweight material innovation, which was brought to serial production maturity by POLYTEC CAR STYLING in Hörsching, furnishes a weight reduction of around 23 per cent as com-pared to conventional PUR RRIM. Moreover, the wall thickness is far lower than would be possible if injection moulded polypro-pylene were used, which means roughly 13 per cent less weight.

DEVELOPMENT OF INTELLIGENT MATERIAL COMBINATIONSThis latest weight reduction is achieved by the addition of hollow glass spheres and carbon fibres to the polyurethane base of the material. The hollow glass spheres lower the density of the material and hence its weight, while the carbon fibres strengthen its structure and thus permit thinner walls in combination with unchanged mechanical resistance and sur-face quality. The sizeable weight savings provided by the new material derive from close and successful teamwork between Porsche, POLYTEC CAR STYLING, 3M and Covestro (former Bayer Material Science).

AN OPTIMISED PRODUCTION CONCEPT FOR SMALL SERIESThe 0.7m high and 0.9m deep bumper has a length of 1.8 m and extends across the entire width of the vehicle. These dimen-sions mean that it numbers among the larg-est PUR car exterior parts. Nonetheless, this sporty component only weighs 4.14 kg and production employing the RRIM process provides decisive price advantages for small series, as it can take place using low-cost aluminium tools with low clamping pres-sure and comparatively simple mould sep-aration. This is in contrast to manufacture utilising polypropylene and an equi valent steel injection moulding tool, which only pays dividends with large numbers of parts.

POLYTEC CAR STYLING is also responsible for the production process, Class A painting and logistics of the rear bumper. The main chal-lenge that these assignments posed was the transfer of the new PUR RRIM Lightweight material to cost efficient serial production. Therefore, POLYTEC not only employed its expertise in the area of optimised tool con-struction and component design in line with the material, but also with respect to the choice of the ideal process parameters for the RRIM plant in connection with material

and tool temperatures, and the air loading and further processing of the component to achieve premium painting capacity.

DIVERSE APPLICATIONSParts made from PUR RRIM Lightweight are highly suitable for exterior use and their applications are correspondingly diverse. These extend from the production of spoil-ers and sill and door panelling to large-area front and rear bumpers. At the moment, POLYTEC’s engineers are concentrating on

pushing back the performance limits of the new material and the related RRIM tech-nology. The objective is to raise mechani-cal capacity still further in tandem with a simultaneous reduction in weight. In addi-tion, another vital, development work focus is on a cut in production costs aimed at also achieving competitive parity with injection moulding in the case of larger component quantities.

Passion creates. . .

A MAJOR STEP TOWARdS THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF TOMORROW

In teamwork with our customer Audi, POLYTEC has developed a plastic transmission oil pan, which represents a major step towards the engine compartment of the future. The weight savings achieved as compared to standard magnesium versions amount to roughly 20 per cent and in addition, the plastic component is corrosion-free. A patented oil drain plug and a screw point for the oil cooler have also been integrated. Production commenced in May 2015 at our plant in Lohne, Germany.

POLYTEC AT THE

Already heard? The POLYTEC GROUP has combined elements of its automotive component development and production compe-tence to form its wide-ranging Integrated Acoustic solutions concept. Accordingly, the resultant “sound of silence” was spot-lighted on a 75 m2-stand at this year’s IAA, which among other aspects presented at first hand the advantages derived from the use of a diversity of plastics technologies in intelligent, acoustic concepts for engine and engine compartment encapsulation.

With over 930,000 visitors, 1,100 exhibi-tors from some 40 countries and 219 world premieres, in 2015 the IAA both strength-ened its position as the leading, interna-tional mobility trade fair and offered clear evidence of the continuing status of cars in society. POLYTEC was also present as an exhibitor from September 15th to 18th and was able to catch the eye with its light-weight construction technologies and inge-nious functional integration solutions under the “Sound of Silence” motto.

CONCENTRATED COMPETENCE IN A SHOW CARThe POLYTEC show car formed a bright red focal point in the centre of the stand and provided an impressive display of both the group’s long-term experience as a sub-sup-plier to the global automotive industry and its concentrated competence. The show car highlighted over fifty plastic parts, which demonstrated to the fair visitors POLYTEC’s vast technological diversity and prob-lem solving expertise with regard to the employment of injection moulding, fibre compounds and polyurethane in exterior, interior, engine bay, structural and acoustic components.

SOUND OF SILENCEIn the evening of Thursday, September 17th, the “Sounds of Silence” were literally on the programme! However, this time the acous-tic highlights were not supplied by our Integrated Acoustic Solutions, but a five-strong live band headed by Key Account Manager Eberhard Pfeiffer from POLYTEC COMPOSITES in Gochsheim (Germany). The result was lively chats in a relaxed atmo-sphere accompanied by classic rock num-bers that included “Sound of Silence” from Simon & Garfunkel.

SOUND OF SILENCEWhat began in 2013 with the launch of pro-duction of soft engine covers for petrol-driven Volvos and was then supplemented by flexi-ble foam parts that lie directly on the noise source, has by no means come to an end with hybrid underbody solutions. For tailor-made “Sounds of Silence” solutions POLYTEC can turn to comprehensive know-how: • For over 25 years POLYTEC has been a

synonym for passion in plastics processing. Both development competence and the necessary production technology expertise are firmly anchored within the group.

• POLYTEC implements individual acous-tic concepts for engine and engine bay encapsulation, as well as an intelligent mix of both.

• Thanks to in-house testing, acoustic ben-efits can be thoroughly measured and cus-tomer requirements fulfilled precisely. This provides a constant flow of high-potential impulses for future development projects.

• We also put our PASSION CREATES INNOVATION maxim into practice in the material development field, as exemplified by VICS and PISA. With its thermo plastic matrix core and carbon or

glass fibre reinforcement, the variable in-moulded composite sandwich (VICS) facilitates the creation of light under-bodies that offer a high level of mechan-ical performance capacity. Moreover, as part of underbody solutions, the POLYTEC in-moulded sound absorber (PISA) serves as a sealed, thin-walled absorber for the highest levels of acoustic insulation.

• High-end, one-shot production permits the low-cost pressing of up to five differ-ing materials in varying thicknesses.

OVER 150 IN-HOUSE-DEVELOPED POLYURETHANE RECIPES FOR INDIVIDUAL APPLICATIONSFor the second time in succession, POLYTEC INDUSTRIAL presented the application possi-bilities for moulded polyurethane parts and abrasion-protective coatings at the larg-est German Schüttgut (bulk material) fair, which is held in the Westfalenhalle in Dort-mund, the innovative fair has evolved into an important, supra-regional specialist event.

As the positive experiences gathered during the last trade fair presentations have shown, polyurethane has become an indis-pensable material where wear and noise protection for transport systems and components are involved. In particular, POLYTEC INDUSTRIAL’s ability to develop a diversity of recipes for individual applica-tions in-house is the object of great inter-est among the fair’s expert visitors.

At the Blechexpo 2015, POLYTEC INdUSTRIAL demonstrated its full range of advisory competence. On the company stand, interested fair visitors were able to obtain infor-mation about innovative plastics solutions for the steel industry.

DO-IT-YOURSELF: WEAR PROTECTION USING THELAN® POLYURETHANEUnder this motto, in 2015 POLYTEC INDUSTRIAL showcased a new cartridge system for sprayed coatings. Using a spe-cially coordinated 2-component system, users have the possibility to easily create top

quality, wear-resistant polyurethane layers for themselves. The POLYTEC spray gun and static mixers provide a homogenous, seam-less and highly wear-resistant coating for applications such as surface repairs.

WITH PURE PASSION... we convince as a reliable and competent supplier of heavy, sprayed polyurethane cor-rosion protection for all types of armatures. Therefore, it was only logical that POLYTEC INDUSTRIAL could not miss the DIAM, Ger-many’s specialist fair for industrial arma-tures, sealing, drive and plant technology.

In the tradition-rich Jahrhunderthalle, which is only a few kilometres away from the group subsidiary in Bochum, on the POLYTEC stand visitors to the fair were able to see for them-selves the advantages of armatures coated with polyurethane. Our coatings are impact- and chemical resistant and provide solid protection against corrosion and abrasion.

Now+Then

since its foundation in 1986, POLYTEC has been a think tank for trendset-ting innovations in the plastics field. Today, the group numbers amongst the world’s leading systems suppliers to the automotive sector and thus to an industry that is constantly developing.

The Upper Austrian location in Hörsching focuses on the development and production of original accessories and small part series and systems for the automotive world. In fact, POLYTEC was already a strong partner with regard to the individualisation of vehi-cle design at the beginning of the 1990s.

At that time, the rigid foaming of PUR and reaction injection moulding (RIM) were the main technologies used and above all, thick-walled and relatively heavy components with low surface quality were manufactured in small batches.

WEIGHT-SAVING MATERIALS AND COST-EFFICIENT DESIGN CONCEPTS In 2015, things look very different. A high speed RRIM process is employed for the production of thin-walled components with Class A surfaces and innovations such as PUR RRIM Lightweight furnish weight reductions of as much as 35 per cent as compared to standard PUR RRIM. Modern plant with an output of 10,000 g per sec-ond and clamping forces of 400 t facilitate shot times of less than 0.8 seconds even for large-volume parts.

Moreover, POLYTEC CAR STYLING acts as a proactive partner in the design process. Special customer and target group demands are thus fulfilled precisely and extensive accessory programmes and special models are realised on a one-stop-shop basis.

INNOVATIONwww.polytec-group.com

Dear Reader,

As you can see from this edition of POLYTEC WORLD, thanks to our innovative capacity and the multifaceted activities throughout our group, 2015 was a very exciting year in a challenging market envi-ronment. Under these circumstances, the ability to react flexibly in an extremely volatile European market is and will remain one of the main attributes demanded of any sub-supplier that wishes to remain successful.

In the course of this financial year, we were also concerned with strategic issues such as targeted acquisitions, a focus on long-term personnel development, group globalisation in the direction of China and last, but not least, the development of numerous inter-esting new projects and subsequent serial production.

The resultant successes constitute motivation for the tasks ahead and allow us to look forward with pleasure and confidence to the continuation of our excellent cooperation. In this spirit, may I offer you my sincere thanks and wish you and your family a joyous Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Friedrich Huemer, CEO

DONATION PROJECTS 2015

This year we once more deliberately refrain from giving out Christmas presents and instead support the following social projects:

Familienbund (Linz, Austria) - The “ICH-DU-WIR” (I-YOU-US) project facilitates the non-violent resolution of conflicts involving socially excluded children within the framework of family advice units.

Vitos Kalmenhof (Idstein, Germany) provides handi-capped children of school age with a home and peda gogic support in residential groups.

ARCHE IntensivKinder (Kuster-dingen, Germany) offers intensive care, support and therapy for children on permanent ventilation in their own homes.
