200 years ago one of the most important events in American and Britishhistory happened along the banks of the Thames River right here inpresent-day Chatham-Kent. Follow the newly established TecumsehParkway which begins at the Historic St. Peter’s Church nestled on theThames River. The picturesque Thames River winds its way throughChatham-Kent and features over 12 pull-offs where you can read aboutthe fateful journey taken by First Nations and the British as they werechased by the American forces in 1813 during the War of 1812. Tracethe steps of the past, leading to the site of the Tecumseh Monument andthe site of the Battle of the Thames where the great Chief Tecumsehwas killed, the dream of a Native nation was shattered, U.S. presidentialdreams were made and a British General’s career was destroyed. Youcan finish your day by stopping at Parks Blueberries and Country Storeor by visiting Fairfield Museum commemorating the Moravian Settlementthat was burned to the ground following the fateful Battle of the Thames.
