    CON OF THE DEAD

Title / Con Of The Dead

    Instructor / Kelly Conley

    Class / Graphic Design 3

    Project / Convention Design

Client / Con Of The Dead

Comments / The goal of this project was to design a convention

and all the materials that would go along with it. I really love

this project because it was so involved. The subject of the

convention was zombie movies in pop culture. The concept

for the design was the gradual stages of a zombie outbreak.

The early ads and flyers for the event would mimic news

reports about individuals found eating human flesh, later

materials released closer to the date of the event would be

items like a registration conformation sheet that looked like

a quarantine zone announcement. The actual event would

look like a military quarantine zone with posters and items

to match. All the type and textures were distressed by hand

    using various chemicals.

    Project / Store Rebranding Project

    Client / Petco

Comments / This project was all about rebranding a store.

I thought it would be nice to take Petco into a more small

town store feel. At this new Petco you would get fresher

ingredients and have more eco friendly items like reusable

store bags. For this project I hand made all the items including

the shopping bag and the employee apron. All the logos were

done with iron on transfers for the fabric pieces.

    Project / Band Line Expansion

    Client / Microsoft Xbox 360

Comments / The challenge for this project was to create a

line of packaging for house wear products that would be an

offshoot of an existing brand. It needed to fit within the brand,

but not be exactly the same. I chose to do the Xbox 360 as

my line to start with, because I love video games, but I also

thought it would be a line that I might buy myself if it were

real. There were many challenges that came up while doing

this project, the hardest of which was finding items that were

the right shapes to go into the line.

    THE HIDDEN MIND OF MAN

Title / The Hidden Mind of Man

    Instructor / Megumi Kiyama

    Class / Print 1

    Project / Ted Conference Topic

    Client / Ted Conference

Comments / This project revolved around the Ted Conference.

We needed to pick a topic that we thought could be discussed

at the conference, but wasnt used that year. I had recently

seen a PBS special about autistic savants and thought it

would make a perfect subject. When people with normal

brain functions take in information the brain filters out what

it feels is unnecessary to retain, but an autistic savants mind

takes in and keeps all information. This is why autistic savants

can listen to a song once and play it back perfectly or see a

city and be able to draw it accurately. Its the autistic savants

flood of information versus our filtered information intake

that I used as the concept to drive this project. I wanted to

show the viewer what its like to be an autistic savant while

at the same time educating them about autistic savants. This

is why I chose to do a small book within a lager book, to

illustrate the full amount of information versus the filtered

    amount of information we get.

  • 6SAVANTS WITH MUSIC SKILLSUnderstanding true sounds

Savants with musical skill are a lot like savants with image creation skills, but instead of visual information, they deal with audio information. Many times musical savant can play an instrument, most of the time it is the piano, without being taught. Some are able to reproduce melodies and identify notes in music after listing to it only once. In fact many musical savants are able to recreate entire songs after one listing. This skill is thought to work in the same way image based savant skills work. The person with this skill is able to retain the audio information in their mind without editing it in to a concept. On top of that the person is able to recall the notes and reproduce them.

    Project / chocolate Rebranding Project

    Client / Cte dOr

Comments / The goal of this project was to brand a line of

chocolates not marketed in the United States. We needed

to brand them as if it were going to be brought into the US

market. I chose Cte dOr for my brand. The original packaging

was very different from the way I ended up taking the design,

but the key element of the elephant was kept to connect it

with the original. I wanted the look of it to be very fresh and

fashionable. The packaging was inspired by the music of

    pop singer Kylie Minogue.

    KMART LIFE MADE EASY

    Title / Life Made Easy

    Instructor / Michael Osborne

    Class / Packaging 4

    Project / Kmart Redesign Project

    Client / Kmart

Comments / This was a group project for Packaging 4. As a

group we took Kmart in a new direction that would help them

do better against their competitors. This was a great project,

because it was the first time I worked in a group. Usually we

work alone so we dont get a lot of opportunities to work in

a group setting. I feel that I got a lot out of this experience,

because it taught me how to work as one unit. For this project

I painted all the cosmetics bottles and caps and made the

pillow and blanket. I also sculpted, molded, and cast the

    blocks for the milk.

  • Kmart became well known for it s Blue Light Specials in the early

90s. We recognized the value in the strong connection people made

between these promotions, Kmart, and savings. To expand this idea

into Kmarts own private line, we took a cue from the French word

soleil (meaning sun), and transformed it into a renewed light, for a

renewed Kmart. Inspired by the natural beauty and goodness of the

sun, Soleil products pair sustainable materials and organic ingredients

    A sub-brand of Catherine & Sebastian, C+S offers a line of premi-

um products for babies, toddlers, and mothers. Innovative packaging

structures, l ike the rice milk four-pack, promote learning and brand

loyalty: the cubed bottle caps help teach children the letters of the

alphabet, while collecting them encourages the continuous purchase

    of a Kmart product.

Serendipity honors the meaning of its name: good luck in making un-

expected, fortunate discoveries. Determined to make the new Kmart

a one-stop shopping experience, we created the Serendipity beauty

salon, and a line of beauty products that makes a direct connection

to the salon. This reciprocal connection strengthens the presence of

the beauty salon, while visiting the salon further promotes Serendipity.

We honored the founders by naming this first tier after them. Catherine

& Sebastian offers premium products at a great value. The package

design for these home goods are rich and sophisticated, providing the

consumer with a sense of pride in their purchase.

Inspired by Kmarts heritage, we combined Kmarts deeprooted retail

history with a welcoming visual aesthetic, strengthened environmental

values, and a focused marketing strategy. The result is a house of

brands organized in a four-tier system according to a price point and

lifestyle criteria that adds value to the consumers shopping experience

and strives to attract a younger consumer base.

    Project / Product Promotion Project

    Client / Canon

Comments / This project was all about the promotion of

an item. I chose to promote the Canon digital SLR and

its variety of interchangeable lenses. The promotion was a

contest / ad campaign. In the ads there would be a photo

and if you filled out the information card and guessed the

correct lens and settings used to take the photo you would

win that lens. This would get people thinking about Canon

and also the information cards would be a great way for

Canon to get a lot of research on potential customers.

    Client / Pantone

Comments / The goal of this project was to promote Pantone

with a set of three posters. For the posters I chose to do

Japanese papercrafts as the subject. This way the person

could have more than just a poster, they would have an

activity to do. I ended up going with puzzles for the actual

papercrafts that I used, this way the person can do the activity

of putting the papercraft together and also have a puzzle

that they can play with afterwards.

    CREATING THE CANON

    Title / Creating The Canon

    Instructor / Ariel Grey

    Class / Print 3

    Project / Paper Promotion Project

    Client / French Paper

Comments / This project is very dear to me. It was done for

my Type 4 class where we needed to use experimental type.

At first I had a very hard time letting go of what I thought

type should look like. I had spent years learning the right

way to set and use type. In this class all that changed for

me. The book itself is about the uncanny valley and how

humans relate to robots. The look and feel of this book is

impaired by the computer scenes and the way characters

interact with digital information in the movie Johnny

    Mnemonic.

We hope to design robots or

    prosthetic hands that will not

    fall into the uncanny valley.

    So I recommend designers

take the first peak as the

    goal in building robots rather

    than the second. Although the

    second peak is higher, there

is a far greater risk of falling

    into the uncanny valley. We

predict that it is possible to

    produce a safe familiarity by

    a nonhumanlike design. So

    designers please consider

    this point. A good example

    is glasses. Glasses do not

    resemble the real eyeball,

    but this design is adequate

and can make the eyes more

    charming. So we should follow

    this principle when we design

    prosthetic eyes. We can

    create an elegant prosthetic

hand ? one that must be

    fashionable. Artist who makes

    statues of Buddhas created

a model of a human hand

that is made from wood. The

    fingers bend at their joints.

Escape by design The hand has no finger print,

    and it assumes the natural

color of wood. But we feel it

is beautiful and there is no

    sense of the uncanny. Maybe

wooden hand can serve as a

    reference for future design.

    SUSTAINABLE BEETLE CLOCK

    Title / Sustainable Beetle Clock

    Instructor / Thomas McNulty

    Class / Packaging 3

    Project / Clock Project

Client / Academy of Sciences SF

Comments / This project is an odd marriage of two things I

really love, the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and

the specific shape of Japanese beetles. The assignment was

to design a clock for an existing brand or company. This was

around the time the Academy of Sciences had finished their

big remodel so I was super stoked about the museum already

and it seemed like a great idea to do a clock that could be

sold in their gift shop. After spending a long time at the

museum I knew that I wanted my clock to be in the shape

of an animal and also knew that it had to be an unexpected

animal. I eventually chose the Japanese rhinoceros beetle,

because I have always loved the shape of that type of beetle.

I looked at many different possible materials for the clock,

but it wasnt until my instructor Thomas McNulty showed

me an example of laser cut cardboard that I finally found

what I was looking for. Doing the clock out of cardboard

made perfect sense with the museums new green remodel,

it would cost almost nothing to make and was made almost

    completely from post-consumer materials.
