Life is too fragile to not take advantage of being close to people you like. Ron and Valerie and I drove over to the Escondido Transportation Center on Wednesday morning for a ride on “The Sprinter”; a diesel fired articulated train that runs from downtown Escondido to downtown Oceanside. Honeybear had to stay in the back of the truck and because of the heat we encountered everywhere it was difficult but we found a shady spot. The Sprinter runs along a freight line right of way between the two cities and its stops include two colleges. It reminded me of a modern day doodle bug train with the two cars in the articulated unit both with diesel engines as the train goes from one deadhead station to another. The next morning (Thursday, September 16) I was itching to get going to Arizona and Tucson and didn’t even want to eat breakfast first, so we stopped in at the local 7-Eleven store and got coffee and soda and then hopped onto Interstate 15 south headed toward Interstate 8 and Yuma, Arizona. It was a cool morning with occasional heavy fog and lots of traffic in the San Diego area. Eventually we found an Indian casino on Interstate 8 and got a good breakfast but as usual we didn’t contribute much to their gambling take. Finally, it seemed like the “real” vacation had begun and we were seeing new country that neither of us had seen before. We like to make a point of staying off the Interstates whenever possible so we got off I-8 near Ocotillo and traveled east on State Route 98 through Calexico and then rejoined I-8 when 98 ran out of steam west of Yuma. At various points along this part of the journey we were very near the California-Mexico border. At one point we could even see the barrier between the two countries though at that distance we couldn’t make out many details. On this day we passed through several border patrol checkpoints, very much like the fruit inspection station just south of Brookings. It felt great going across the state line into Arizona though I took the wrong exit for Old Town Yuma and ended up on Business 8 through town. Yuma has a lot of older classic style motels and I marked it down in mind to get back here sometime, but not when it is so hot. Although the day had started off cool near the California coast, by 11:50am the temperature was already 107°F! We continued on Interstate 8 until Gila Bend as there isn’t an alternative. At Gila Bend we decided enough already of racing through the countryside at 70 miles per hour and not seeing anything. We stopped for gas in Gila Bend and took photos of the real wild looking Space Age Motel and Restaurant and then turned south on state route 85 headed to Ajo and Why where we then headed west and south to Tucson. Instead of getting to Tucson quickly it took five or six hours and they were some of the best spent hours of the trip. and it may take 50-100 years before any “arms” appear. An adult saguaro may be 125 years old or more, may weigh 6 tons, and can be up to 50 feet high! The average life span is probably 150-175 years with some plants living more than two centuries! We stopped frequently along the way to photograph and simply enjoy the saguaro forest. Each one different than the other and each so vulnerable. We even found a rare saguaro with a “hat” or “crest” as it is official known on top of one saguaro and the skeleton of another one that had died some time ago.

We were treated to some overhead aerial antics from the Air Force and were stopped one more time along the way by the United States Border Patrol. We were in the “war zone” apparently and hadn’t thought about that. That’s some brutal country for people to come across the border at, but there is a local road – Highway 19 from Sells that leads into Mexico. At other border patrol stations we had been waved through once they

took one look at us but the at the one on Highway 86 they asked if we were United States citizens; we gave the correct answer and kept driving. The border patrol narrows the roads down to one lane and make everyone pass inspection. At some stops they have very alert sniffer dogs helping out. We also saw border patrol agents driving in the dry washes and combing some of them with tires to smooth them out so they could come back later and see if anyone had walked or driven across. It all felt more like a big game (a very deadly one at that) than a war and we never did see any people migrating north though why they would do it in daylight with temperatures in the 100’s is beyond me. Later after getting back to Port Orford and searching the Internet we found that the Tucson sector is the largest and busiest border region of the Border Patrol with 3,200 agents who made 51,111 arrests and seized 270,418 pounds of marijuana in the first three months of fiscal 2010. Sadly the Pima County Medical Examiner reported that as of July 16 of this year they had recovered the bodies of 170 people who

had died while in the desert north of the border while trying to enter this country. The numbers increased in July, August and September.

The saddest part of Route 86 is the overwhelming amount of roadside memorials to people who have died along its lonely way. We saw dozens of them and never have seen or saw after that anything like that amount of carnage. The part of 86 closest to Tucson goes through the Pascua Yaqui Reservation and to the north of that is the Saguaro National Park. My recommendation is take 86 and you’ll see all the saguaro you’d like and not have to deal with the National Park Service.

Shortly before we reached the end of Highway 86, we passed the turn-off for the Kitt Peak National Observatory. The facility hosts 26 independent telescopes making it the largest, most diverse, gathering of astronomical instruments in the world. We could see several of the buildings high on the mountain but the road up was 12 miles and we were already near the end of a hot, tiring day

so we took a few photos from a distance and kept on driving.

We found a motel in north Tucson through one of those coupon books you find at fast food restaurants and visitor centers and settled in for the night. The motel was an odd one looking like it was a converted series of small apartment buildings. Some of the rooms/apartments were rented out monthly while others daily. We then spent too much time looking for the local Domino’s Pizza which we found out had burned down and was gone though not yet gone from the phone book, etc.

The next day we took a drive around north Tucson but it was too hot to stay in one place for too long. By 9:26am it was already 90°F. Our first stop was the local Circle K which had 44oz drinks for 79¢. Even better, they had Styrofoam cups! We learned to love these cups because they provide much better insulation than the typical paper or plastic ones. By the end of a hot day, a Styrofoam cup would still have some ice left while paper or plastic cups would be iceless before

noon! Many states have banned the use of Styrofoam cups due to environmental concerns but not Arizona. Having seen how well they perform, we applaud their decision.

We drove downtown and then to a bookstore in the trendy and “historic Fourth Avenue” section of Tucson and found the store Valerie was looking for once we called and got directions. The gracious owner of The Book Stop let me bring Honeybear into her store where she cooled off by laying down on the cement floors. We then visited a wonderful neighborhood bookstore/CD/DVD store called Bookmen’s which was observing No Censorship week. Valerie kept trying to get in touch with a friend of hers who lives in Tucson but that was proving difficult. (It works better when you dial the correct phone number!) Temperatures that day reached 110 degrees so a lot of outdoor activity wasn’t very inviting. We did find an unusual sort of restaurant/buffet called Furr’s which turned out to be a winner. What Furr’s does differently than other smorgies is you can go through what seems like a cafeteria line and then tell the servers what you want. But unlike a cafeteria you can have as much as you want and go back for seconds though they have servers who will gladly take your order and go get it for you. Furr’s is a regional chain in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Texas.

Letter to the Editor,In less than a month we have the opportunity to decide who will represent us and our community. I have had the pleasure of working with our elected representatives for a number of years now.

John Hewitt is a fantastic colleague and works diligently for the people of Port Orford. John has and does serve on a number of committees outside of his duties as a Councilor to the benefit of us all. He has been Council President for over two years and has shown excellent leadership in the Mayor’s absence. John is working side by side with Mayor Jim on finding funding and solutions to our failing water system.

Tim Pogwizd is a great representative to the people of our community. As proprietor of the Port Orford RV Village; along with his wife who works for our school district, he understands the hardships our sewer rates have on us all and is working towards real solutions. Tim is a dedicated public servant who always puts the needs of the people before his own and one of the leaders of the Highway 101 Beautification started last year to clean up and beautify our main street.

Dianne Schofield has shown great interest in our community. She is a single mother, a business owner, (the new Sirens Cove Café) and a student

with a Bachelors Degree in Business and is working on her MBA. She is also a caregiver to her father who has Alzheimer’s. Dianne understands the issues facing the people of our community and desires the opportunity to find resolutions that benefit us all.

It has been a pleasure to work alongside Scott Luhr as a City Councilor for the past two years. Scott has two years left on his term as Councilor and I look forward to working with him over the next two years as he finishes his four year term as City Councilor.

Mayor Jim Auborn is a self-sacrificing public servant who has served the people of this community as a Councilor and Mayor through life threatening personal conflicts. Although complications arose with his new kidney, there have been no signs of rejection for some time and he is healthier than he has been in over a 20 years. Mayor Jim’s perseverance is only matched by his dedication to the people of Port Orford. I have had the opportunity to work with Mayor Jim for years on issues facing our community. He and I have not always agreed on every issue but he respects the opinions of others and I have sought his counsel on a number matters. He is a strong educated leader that governs our community soundly with consideration for all. His relationship with our local, county, state and federal elected officials is exceptional. These bonds are important now more than ever

as he is currently working with these officials to find funding solutions for our deteriorating water infrastructure.

Again, in less than a month we have the opportunity to decide who will represent us and our community. It is my belief Mayor Jim, Dianne, Tim and John embody what it is to be a public servant and I hope you join me in voting for them to represent you and the future of our community.

Letter to the Editor,The central issue of this mid-term election is strong, tried, capable leadership. Given the crucial issues facing our City at this time, we can’t afford to elect a mayor who needs on-the-job training.

Jim Auborn is far and away the best choice. The two other mayoral candidates have not offered any new

approaches for addressing the problem of the City’s water impoundment area and infrastructure system which haven’t been explored in the past. Our police department, our City crews and administration are all working well better than they ever have. Volunteerism in City clean-ups across Port Orford has brought wonderful small and gradual results.

Sure there will always be differences of opinion and this has brought change to Port Orford for the better. In City government it’s often tough going but that’s how it works. That’s democratic government at its best.

This important mid-term election vote Auborn for mayor, Tim Pogwizd, John Hewitt, Diane Schofield for the City Council.

Thank you,

John Roorbach

Letter to the Editor,A recent writer to this paper wrote a letter about Art Robinson, who is running for Congress, against Peter DeFazio. This writer cites a web site purporting to offer Art’s views. Actually, this web site is paid for and written by Peter DeFazio. There was a reference to “abolish public schools”...well, actually, when you read the reasons given, it makes sense. The teachers unions, along with the Dept. of Education, have been scamming the public for many years, and here in Oregon, we hold the dubious record of most money spent per student. Yet, kids are being dumbed down to the lowest common level. This person also claims that Mr. Robinson advocates that parents who send their kids to public school are guilty of child abuse. False! He actually said that Public Education is a form of tax financed socialism, and that system is the problem, not the parents. He further made a statement that Art feels Radioactivity is good for you and should be put in our water supplies...Huh? He actually said that “suitably diluted”, a hermetic radiation dose could significantly prolong our lives, which is based on science, not fantasy.

Remember, this web site is written and paid for by the Congress critter who introduced HR 4646, the “One Percent Transaction Tax”, which means every transaction conducted at your bank or credit union would be subjected to this tax. Yep, the same fellow that won’t debate Art Robinson, unless he can review the questions and cherry pick the ones he wants to answer. Art will answer any and all questions. I have seen him

do so. By the way, DeFazio is also the same guy who has been listed on the “American Socialist Party” roles for many years. Do we really need to keep him in office to plunder our resources even further?

Letter to the Editor,Stop these alliances! One councilor, one vote.

Sandee Luhr

Letter to the Editor,“All politics is local,” said late Congressman Tip O’Neill. That’s especially true here on Oregon’s Wild Rivers Coast. It’s what the Founders intended in our Constitution when they required House members to seek voter approval every two years.

Contrast Peter DeFazio’s four-term record of independence with what we can expect if Art Robinson is elected. Robinson’s views are so extreme, he would be isolated and powerless to protect our interests.

Congressman DeFazio has earned the respect of his colleagues on key House committees that directly affect our interests. He’s worked tirelessly for his District in many ways. But a vote for Robinson would squander these hard-won gains.

*As a personal commitment, DeFazio has helped young people get the

education they’ll need to be productive members of society: he has donated ALL of his congressional pay raises—over $300,000—to scholarships for needy students in our community colleges.

*As a senior member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, he has advanced our fishing industry. He’s supported funding for all of the ports along our Coast—including Corps of Engineers’ dredging, without which the Port Orford fishing community would collapse.

*On that Committee, he’s worked to keep our timber industry healthy. He has urged increased harvesting on federal forest lands, both for jobs in the logging industry and fire protection under healthy timberland management.

*As a senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, he’s urged keeping jobs here, not in foreign countries with corrupt defenses against fraud. He opposed all of the so-called

“free trade” measures, which were supported by big banks and businesses, so they could profit by sending American jobs to low-wage countries like Mexico and China.

Our Representative must have support among other Representatives, Democrats and Republicans, for committee assignments and votes on key legislation. Peter DeFazio’s independence brings to his office the assurance that our natural resources and the jobs they create are protected in Washington.

Letter to the Editor,My name is Scott Luhr and I am running for Mayor. I have served five years on the Port Commission and two years as city councilor. My wife Sandy and I built, own and operate The Little Shop of Horrors. If someone had told me four or five years ago I would be running for Mayor I would have laughed, however many things have changed.

Under the current leadership after six years we the city have only come up with one potential grant and have no other plans to correct our failed water system. When asked why we are told by the City, “we are looking”. This should be a major priority, yet it seems little is being done.

I have been asked by a number of people not to run because I will split the vote. In effect they are saying someone they wish not to be mayor could. When questioned why they would manipulate an election like that their response was “that’s politics” and to that I say “let the people decide.”

Another times that concerns me is our budget process and spending. It’s my impression after being on the budget committee for three years that the primary concern is getting through it as fast as we can, as opposed to taking our time, line by line to see where and how to cut costs and use our resources more effectively. Even when we are in a

deep recession the city feels the need to raise water rates, purchase a new pickup truck, and raise city payroll by 2% along with step increases. The average person in Port Orford has not had an increase to afford this.

Now I feel a need to address the impression held by many in this town that there is a hidden agenda controlled by a few. I can’t prove it and if I could I would scream foul, but it is interesting to note that in all of the Mayor’s reports to the council, only two councilors and the city administrator are mentioned reflecting many hours of dialogue. What happened to the other councilors? If the two councilors spent less time with the city administrator he may have more time to pursue grants to fix our failing water system.

If elected Mayor I will resign my position as Port Commissioner to devote full time to being your Mayor and

include the entire city council in solving these issues.

Respectfully,Scott Luhr

CCEC NewsThe Coos Curry Electric Cooperative board of directors adopted a revision of the cooperative’s line extension policy that was the result of a multi-year effort by a cross-departmental team of employees. Under the new policy, members requesting temporary or permanent electric service will pay a non-refundable engineering fee of $250 or $50 per lot, whichever is greater. Once the engineering fee is paid, the cooperative would prepare a Line Construction Contract, intended to be a binding cost agreement, for all new line extensions, modifications to existing services or temporary service.

The agreement would detail the specific work to be performed by CCEC, including materials, labor/transportation costs, permit fees, filing fees, independent consultants, overheads and contractors. If construction is delayed more than ninety (90) days from the date the contract was generated, costs would be recomputed and adjusted if necessary. If voided, any construction fees already advanced will be refunded by the cooperative, except the engineering fee and any additional engineering costs and those funds advanced for specialized equipment and/or lead time material. All new installations or modifications to existing electrical services must comply with the latest revisions of the National Electric Safety Code, National Electrical Codes, county building codes and the cooperative’s construction standards, and service will not be energized until properly inspected by the State Electrical Inspector. The new policy is effective January 1, 2011.

Letter to the Editor,

Your vote will never count more than this year. A group of people want to control this town. They have personal agendas and need the votes on the city council to pass everything. They hate questions, they hate explaining themselves. I am a thorn in their side because I want answers. The next four years will be a dictatorship with No input from you the people.

The people of Port Orford are independent minded. That’s why we live here. We don’t want to be pushed around or told what to do.

You have choice to decide whether you want people who will listen to you, work for you and ask questions. Or people who will vote as a block no matter what is before them.

Take back control of your town. Vote Clancy and Luhr your independent councilor and mayor.

Agriculture Funding ProgramLet’s get this project funded! Please support Pacific High School’s Vocational Agriculture Program. During the inclement winter months, it is difficult to venture to the existing greenhouse on a daily basis without the students getting soaked and muddy. In order to provide continually enriching academic experiences for students, we hope to include additional materials in our classroom setting; basically, we want to bring the greenhouse experience to the classroom. This is where your help is needed! Please check out the project details at: http://www.donorschoose.org/we-teach/544222. Through October 18th there is a matching program available for Friends and Family donations so don’t wait! Money ValuesA four-week study to encourage participants to examine their ideas of money, possessions, and use of material goods with a focus on an exploration of Biblical texts regarding money will begin Sunday, October 17. In our culture virtually everything is in some way affected by money and our attitudes toward money. In these challenging financial times, our beliefs about money may especially be called into question. The study group will meet at 3:00 PM on four Sundays - October 17 & 24 (at St. John Episcopal), and November 7 & 14 (at Unity of Bandon) and will be facilitated by Episcopal vicar, the Reverend Susan Hazen and Unity minister, the Reverend Robin Haruna. All are welcome and encouraged to attend the discussion. For more information call 541-347-2152 or 541-347-4696.

Letter to the Editor:Mayor candidate Milton Finch says this election, “Isn’t about personalities and it isn’t about character.” He says, “No one has ever questioned either my integrity or my dedication.” Let us have a Finch letter to the editor montage shall we. Now remember these are his own words from published letters to the editor “in quotations.”

He says, “Who is the mayor of Port Orford.” “John R was elected and then got sick or whatever.” “You can always see him with a smoke in his mouth, so, I ruled out the cancer thing.” “Jim A.” “did have a kidney trans-plant and to me it would seem that he could not act in the capacity as Mayor Pro Tem, as soon as he did”. [Is he accusing John R and Jim A of getting sick on purpose?] He says, “What are your priorities?” “A new library.” “A new horse arena.” “Expand the skateboard park.” “But let me ask the people of this town, are you willing to spend thousands of dollars to fix the City Streets?” “Water system?” “Right of ways?” “I would like to know what the priorities of the people of this town are.” “If you people would use your energies.” “Focusing on what we can afford to do as a community.” “Then I think we can look at new libraries.” [I thought dealing with streets and water was his job when he was a councilor and where would the library be if he was the Mayor.]

He says, “How about if Mr. Hewitt and Mr. Abbott resigned?” “Then no one would have to worry anymore as to the cost of the Recall.” [Finch cost us over $3000 dollars and the recall was defeated by nearly 70%.] He says, “People, this dark sky ordinance has been going on for at least 14 years. Nobody wanted it before and I would bet no one wants it now.” “Why did you move to Port Orford.” “Because it’s not California.” “Leave this place alone.” [I believe the Council grandfathered dark sky so it didn’t affect the citizens.] He says, “On a different note, how about the mayor’s wife going to businesses and trying to get us to come up with $300 apiece for our half of some bike rack.” “Come on people let’s get real here.” “It appears someone knows someone else that needs some work”. [ The bike racks were going to be built by shop students at Pacific as a fundraiser. He could have just said no thank you.] He says, “I am against the way.” “This ‘project’.” “To issue a ROW (right of way use permit) to allow the Hawthorns to go forward.” “Giving away (city) property.” “Council says it is all still public property.” “What does Public Property mean?” [Property that is public would be my guess.] He says, “To allow a business to use the right of way usage permit to extend a building.” [Just look for yourself, there’s no building on the right of way, and more parking to boot.]

He says, of another letter writer, “Do you live in Port Orford physically.” “Own a legitimate business.” “You are still encouraging people to voice yet more opinion on an issue.” “In closing, quit crying about a town in which you do not live in (physically).” But then he says, “Come on People.” “Stand up.” “Voice your opinion, oops I forgot they won’t let you.” Um….yeah, in fact citizens have a chance to speak at the beginning and end of each council meeting. Let us not forget that BEFORE Finch TOOK over the Jubilee 3 years ago it had over $20,000 dollars, now it is broke.] He says, “We didn’t do so good at raising monies for next year’s show”. [Seems he didn’t do so good at raising any money at all.] Finch says being Mayor of Port Orford, “isn’t about personalities and isn’t about character”. [Well I for one think it is and for the sake of our town’s future, I hope you do to!]

In closing, Finch says, “Transparency, openness and honesty are key essentials to being a more informed citi-zen.” [Finally we agree!]

Candidate ForumBy Evan Kramer

The League of Women Voters of Curry County held their candidate forum in Port Orford last Tuesday with 12 candidates participating.

County Commissioner: Candidate Lucie La Bonte said that her past government experience counts having been on the county commission for eight years, and having worked with the commissioners and watershed councils among others. La Bonte also worked for the Port of Brookings-Harbor and the Port of Gold Beach and introduced the first county financial plan. She vowed to pursue more revenue options for the county.

Commissioner Candidate David Itzen said he is running because of the direction the county is going in and that former county commissioners didn’t avoid the iceberg the county is headed for now. He said we need commissioners who work together. Itzen sited his experiences running a school and starting several businesses saying he had been in private enterprise for 25 and would come to the position of county commissioner well prepared.

Astronomy DayThe South Coast Astronomy Club celebrates Astronomy Day on Saturday night, October 16 at 7 pm. Come join the festivities at The Langlois Mountain Retreat, located in the coastal mountains at an elevation of 1200’. Through the eyepieces of several telescopes, we will be viewing the First Quarter Moon, Jupiter, Uranus, the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, and the highlight of the evening, Comet 103P/Hartley. Comet Hartley will be visible to the naked eye if predictions hold true and the weather conditions cooperate. Langlois Mountain Retreat is approximately 3 miles east of Highway 101 on Langlois Mountain Road. Bring your own telescopes, binoculars, chairs, blankets, warm clothing and refreshments.

The candidates were asked about how things would proceed if the law enforcement levy on this November’s ballot fails. David Itzen said the chances of passage of the levy were slim and that if it failed the commissioners would need to come back with a smaller levy. Lucie La Bonte said if it failed the sheriff’s budget would have to be cut including deputies and the 911 center. She said there is some talk of Curry County going with a regional 911 center.

In response to a question about what the candidate’s vision for Curry County was Lucie La Bonte talked about working with small ports funding and a water center in the south county. David Itzen said we had a timber industry until the eco-socialists shut it down. He said he would create a more business friendly environment.

Both candidates were asked what is the most important problem facing Port Orford. David Itzen said water and replacing the water system which if elected he would support and assist Port Orford. Lucie La Bonte said water and talked about her helping the City purchase the watershed, adding Garrison

Lake as a secondary water source, and working on Port dredging funding.

The candidates were asked to be specific about what steps they would take to change the direction Curry County is heading and support new business. Lucie La Bonte said she had supported the new golf course at Pistol River, the need for a marine center and supporting the fishermen. David Itzen said the commissioners need to reorganize and attempt to bring in new businesses.

Next week: The City Council and Mayor candidates.

We believe Port Orforddeserves a higher ground!

Politics these days has become divisive and confrontational. We believe this is not in the best interests of our town.

We believe everyone deserves to be heard. Which is why we commit to meetings where concerns and discussion are organized to ensure both clarity and efficiency.

We believe everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Which is why we commit to civil behavior in which people listen politely to all viewpoints and respond thoughtfully when appropriate.

And, we believe we all need to work together to help Port Orford address the key issues facing us at this time.

This is why, as candidates for office in Port Orford, we commit to these precepts:

Our Pledge of CivilityConduct meetings openly and at all times with civility and courtesy.Citizens who appear before us will be treated with respect.Differing views will have the opportunity to be fully vetted and considered.Support the decision of our majority after vigorous debate when we may agree to disagree.

Our GoalsFind affordable solutions to our infrastructure problems and present them for approval.Promote economic development by supporting existing local businesses and attracting

appropriate new ones.Make Port Orford a more attractive place to live, work, shop and recreate.Put the best interests of the community above those of ourselves.

We hope all the candidates will join us in this effort.

Respectfully,

Jim Auborn, Candidate for Mayor of Port OrfordJohn Hewitt, Tim Pogwizd and Dianne Schofield, Candidates for Council

Letter to the Editor,I was delayed at an appointment in Coos Bay and missed the Chamber of Commerce candidate’s forum on September 28th, but I understand it was “standing room only” and good discussions were had, great!!

While the September 16th Council meeting wasn’t as exciting as the one I missed, two rather important things occurred.

First, a man and his son (both adults) spoke to the Council. They were members of the Arthritis Foundation biking group camped at our park. The son had received a speeding ticket driving his father’s car in the 20mph school zone. They both carried on about not seeing the sign, and this was the first time in our town, and they wanted the club to have a good impression of

Port Orford Weather ReportThe Public Works Department reported that for the month of September 3.11 inches of rain had been recorded. The high temperature for the month was 81 degrees on September 3. The low temperature for the month was 46 degrees and recorded on September 23. The temperature exceeded 70 degrees on only four days in September.

Ronn Kerr to Lead WorshipRev. Ronn Kerr of Port Orford will be the guest preacher and worship leader at Zion Lutheran Church, 11:00 am, Sunday, October 17. Zion Lutheran is currently without a formal pastor and services are being rotated between lay persons and guest clergy while the congregation decides on its future.

Kerr is a United Methodist clergyman who semi-retired to Port Orford ten years ago. He has been involved in a variety of activities on the Oregon South Coast including serving as priest in residence at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church for six months, president of the Port Orford and North Curry Chamber of Commerce for two years, the first president of America’s Wild Rivers Coast, and the Rotary Foundation Chair and President Elect of the Rotary Club of Port Orford.

He has published more than three dozen books and many articles on the Bible, theology, church history and other subjects and he and his wife Jo operate Kerr Resources, a religious communications company that distributes a variety of worship,

education, and pastoral resources www.KerrResources.com. They also manage websites and resource distribution for WME Press, a religious publishing entity of the World Methodist Council and Ronn continues to serve as a communications consultant to the bishops of the World Methodist Council.

Everyone in the Port Orford area is invited to attend Zion for this and all other services. Zion Lutheran Church is located at 2015 Washington Street, Port Orford.

us, and come back etc, etc. They didn’t quite threaten, but the pressure was there. Now the Big Surprise! They were advised to appear before the Council by Councilor David Brock Smith. Why, I ask you, would he do this? For a ticket you talk to the Judge! Doesn’t he care if people speed in a school zone or is he attempting to pressure our Police Department who I might add, is doing a great job. I just don’t know.

Secondly, a number of comments were made by the Mayor and certain Councilors just before the end of the meeting concerning a $30,000 study to be made by Umpqua Corp. They were referring, I believe, to the project of tearing down our Visitor’s Center and replacing it possibly with a two story Marine Interpretive Facility. Once Again, tidbits without clarity.

Folks, If we aren’t vigilant we lose our freedoms, our tax dollars and our Town.

RespectfullyJim Hajek

Letter to the Editor,My name is Tim Pogwizd and I am seek-ing re-election for City Council. I would like to thank you for allowing me to serve you the last two years. I look for-ward to serving for the next four years. As many small cities we are faced with a failing water delivery system. We have to all come together and find an afford-able way to replace this infrastructure.

Police Chief’s ReportBy Marvin Combs

Port Orford Police arrested Michael Shane Harris on two warrants. The first warrant was out of Curry County for Probation Violation; bail $30,000, second warrant was out of Coos County for Theft I; bail $75,000. Harris was lodged in Curry County Jail on both warrants.

Port Orford Police arrested Jesse Moss for Criminal Mischief II and lodged him in the Curry County Jail; bail was set at $10,000.

Special Thanks: I want to thank Jeff McFarlane owner of Camp Blanco RV Park for donating his time and placing the trailer hitch to our police units. Also Tim Pogwizd owner of Port Orford RV Park for donating some hitch parts for each patrol unit. Now that we have the radar trailer back and working we will be able to set it out more. Some of you have called and advised that the speed trailer is not working. I appreciated your calls and contacts on this situation. The speed trailer is working fine; we have set the unit not to come on until you are above 30 mph. It does not come on

when you are driving under 30 mph; this is a good thing when you are not seeing any speed numbers.

On November 1, 2010 it will be a year since I was appointed as your Chief of Police. This department has worked hard at getting to know you and working with this community. I would like to hear from you about what you like or what you think we need to work on during this next year. Please drop off your positive thoughts or negative thoughts to us here at City Hall. Please put it in writing or e-mail it to me at [email protected].

Looking forward working with you during 2011.

Yes, it will cost money to do this but I can assure you it will be done in the most affordable way we can. We are currently seeking grants to help pay a portion of the costs. I would encourage you to get involved with this process and come forward with solutions.

It will be presented to the people and will be up to you to decide if it is viable.

My pledge to you is, to work well with my fellow councilors the Mayor and city staff to make Port Orford the best place it can be.

To be available to hear your concerns and share your concerns with my fellow councilors.

To do what is right for Port Orford and its citizens.

I am a fair and honest person and will continue to serve our community if you allow me to.

This is my way of giving back to my community.

Respectfully,

Tim Pogwizd.

Property Tax Bills ComingCurry County Treasurer/Tax Collector, Isabella Brock, expects to have 2010-11 property tax statements mailed by this week. Most homeowners will see that the real market value estimate for

their home has fallen, but that will not translate into lower taxes. Overall Curry County real market values dropped by about 12 percent in 2009 according to County Assessor Jim Kolen. However tax bills are unlikely to drop this fall because in most cases market values, even though lower than last year, remained above assessed (taxable) values as of the January first assessment date.

Tax value increases are limited to 3% by Measure 50, a constitutional amendment approved by Oregon voters in 1997.

Since 2007 property values have been declining, however the only way falling values could lower taxes is if market values fall below the limited assessed values. As of January 1, 2010, Curry County assessed values average 75 percent of market values for most residential classified properties.

Measure 50 froze tax rates, limited assessed value increases to 3%, and

limited taxable values to the assessed or the real market value whichever is lower.

Approximately $22.7 million will be billed by the tax collector for 2010-11. Of this amount Curry County receives 6.46%. Of the rest, over 57% goes to schools, over 18% to the cities, more than 5% to libraries, 3% to fire districts and almost 3% each to the health and port districts.

Each year there are thousands of individual changes to the property tax roll and the tax bill serves as notice for those changes. Taxpayers should review their tax statements carefully and if they have questions or have not received their tax bill by November 1st, call Isabella Brock’s tax office at (541) 247-3305 or (866) 298-0307. Valuation questions should be directed to the assessor’s office at (541) 247-3294 or 1-800-242-7601.
