FREDRIKSTAD CRUISE PORT
Gateway to the Oslofjord
Sail in to Fredrikstad through the 833 islands of the Marine National Park. On the quay passengers are greeted with a show themed around our industrial heritage. Close by is Gamlebyen, the best preserved fortress town in North Europe – a living attraction with busy markets and cafés. There is a free ferry into the city’s urban centre. The towns of Moss, Sarpsborg, and Halden are a short bus ride away. Moss is known for its splendid galleries. The majestic Fredriksten Fortress towers over Halden. Sarpsborg will be 1000 years old in 2016. Through the town roars Sarpefoss, the waterfall with the greatest flow in Europe. Inland there is a peaceful landscape perfect for outdoor activities. Historical boats ferry passengers up the Halden Canal, with Scandinavia’s highest locks.

The Oslofjord region is rich in history, with a concen-tration of monuments from the Iron, Bronze, Viking and Middle Ages.
This tour provides a tightly packed experience of the top 5 attractions of the region, both at sea and ashore.
Our trip starts with a fjord cruise to the west side of the Oslo fjord. We start with a guided tour at the Midgard Viking Centre. We continue to the Oseberg Mound on the way to Tønsberg Harbour, where Vikings will row us out on the fjord with the Viking ship Saga Oseberg.
We sail through the scenic arcipelago of Hvaler, with Europe’s first maritime national park and past beautiful beaches and skerries. We visit the city of Halden and beautiful Fredriksten Fortress and make a stop on the Ancient Road with rock carvings from Bronze Age.

We travel to the Old Svinesund Bridge and stroll across the border. Stand with one leg in each country and gaze out to the marine national parks of Outer Hvaler and Kosterhavet. We make a short walk along the lovely Coastal Path with stunning views of the Oslo fjord and the two border bridges.
These islands are filled with history which the guide will enjoy sharing with you. Among the island’s many attractions is one of Norway’s oldest medieval stone churches. We also visit East Norway’s largest fishing harbour, and The Marine National Park Centre.

We sail out into the Hvaler archipelago on our way to the maritime town of Strømstad in Sweden. We cruise through Outer Hvaler National Park over the border to Sweden, and into Kosterhavet National Park. Sightseeing in Strømstad conducted by a local guide. Return to Fredrikstad by boat.

1.5 CLIMB THE HALDEN CANAL IN EUROPE´S HIGHEST LOCKSEnjoy a beautiful canal boat tour in Northern Europe´s oldest and highest locks. Experience a special part of Norwegian industrial history.
We go by bus to the fantastic Canal system of Halden.
The Halden Canal is a well-kept secret tucked away along the Swedish border. This fascinating and idyllic waterway is beloved by all who have discovered it.
The canal was constructed between 1852 and 1860 to facilitate timber log drives. While timber is now transported by road and rail, we can still enjoy the beautiful lakes and astonishing system of locks at Strømsfoss, Ørje and Brekke – this last lock, at 26.7 metres, is the highest in Northern Europe. A canal trip can be combined with other attractions.
M/S Strømsfoss take you up to the bridge of Strømsfoss. During the canal tour a guide will tell you about the canal system, it´s history and about the wild life along the Halden watercourse.
If you’re lucky you will get a glimpse of beaver, osprey, eagle or elk.

His greatest expedition was to the South Pole. His first expedition was to cross the living room in Fredrikstad.
The Viking king Olav Haraldsson founded Borg in 1016. We take you time travelling back to the Medieval town that grew up here.
Roald was born at the farm “Tomta”, situated by the river Glomma. The proud sailing ships of the family shipping firm were berthed here. The old “captain’s house” is one of Norway´s best preserved. Enjoy Amundsen´s Explorer Track where you can go skiing – all year!
In the ruins of St. Nikolas Church and Olav’s Chapel we meet 12th century inhabitants of Olav’s town, and learn about medieval beliefs and superstitions. We visit the Medieval Garden and learn fascinating facts about herbs and plants.

Discover three thousand years in three hours! The historic fortress Oscarsborg in the middle of the Oslofjord has a dramatic story to tell.
Our tour starts on foot in the star-shaped fortress town of Fredrikstad, founded in 1567.
Our tour continues to The Ancient Trail, Norway’s most concentrated cluster of ancient monuments. 3000 year old Bronze Age rock art and mystical Iron Age stone circles bring our prehistory to life.
We stop in the town of Drøbak, known for its picturesque sailors’ houses from the late 17th century before we continues by boat to the famous fortress of Oscarsborg. The guns here sank the German cruiser Blücher on 9 April 1945. We visit the Christmas House in Drøbak before we return.

2.6 EDVARD MUNCH -FROM GRAVE TO CRADLEExperience the places which have been important in Munch`s extensive art production and life. The tour starts at the family tomb at Old Glemmen Church in Fredrikstad. We get an insight into the lives of Edvard Munch´s parents. Munch´s mother Laura´s family came from Fredrikstad. When Laura died at young age his sister Karen took care of the children. Aunt Karen became the most important person in Edvard Munch´s life.
The journey continues to Åsgårdsstrand and Edvard Munch’s house. We get a guided tour in the house where Munch painted some of his most famous works, such as ”The Dance of Life” and ”The girls on the Bridge”. We enjoy lunch at Hotel Åsgårdsstrand. Return by ferry to Ramme Gaard, Hvitsten.
Edvard Munch bought Nedre Ramme in Hvitsten in 1910, a house he retained until his death in 1944. At Ramme Gaard, Edvard Munch produced some of his greatest works of art. You will have the opportunity to visit his home, experience some of the places that can be related to his paintings and take part in the story.
Ramme Gaard is an eco-cultural meeting place with one of Norways most beautiful gardens. We will enjoy an organic snack-meal om the farm`s own product, and get the taste of the local “Absinth”.

2.5 FREDRIKSTEN FORTRESS – OFTEN ATTACKED BUT NEVER CAPTURED
We embark, bound for Fredriksten Fortress. Now, more than 200 years since the last shot fired at war this territory is one of the most peaceful borderline areas in the world. In addition to beautiful nature and several amazing viewpoints, the fortress is also a popular cultural arena with national and international events.We visit the fortress old bakery and brewery and get a taste of local beer and bread. We go for a climb for the top at Kings bastion for an amazing view over Halden town, the fjord and Sweden.
The majestic fortress Fredriksten towers protectively over Halden town. Today Fredriksten is a grand nature scenery. It’s also a popular cultural scene with local, national and international events. The contrast could not be greater to its origin – defending the country in front line against enemy fire.

The star-shaped old town of Fredrikstad founded in 1567 is the best preserved fortress town in Northern Europe.
Visit Isegran – a coastal culture park, promoting maritime culture and history
We stroll along the cobbled streets of the fortress town with our guide. The town gives you a sense of history, but it is no museum – people live and work here. The army ran the place for centuries, but now the old buildings are occupied by artists, craftsmen, cafés and shops.
The lovely island of Isegran in the middle of the Glomma river is also home to a vibrant maritime centre. Sailing ships are lovingly restored and sails, masts and nautical equipment is made here. It is an internationally acknowledged museum harbour.

Join the Commandant on his inspection of the Fort-ress Town. Experience a provincial town and the history that
made it.Commandant Hans Jacob Scheel had command of the fortress from 1765 to 1774. He will invite you to accompany him on a historical tour of the town – partly informative, partly hilarious!
You will hear lurid tales of witch burnings, royal visits, Swedish attacks, brothels, illicit liquor and the great era of sailing ships. And most of it is true! You will have to decide what is and what isn’t – and if the Commandant is in a good mood he’ll serenade us with a song from the ramparts.
We stroll around the centre of Fredrikstad, visiting the Cathedral which is one of only two in the world that also doubles as a lighthouse. We visit the lively Quayside Promenade and the old quarters of Cicignon and St. Croix. Here there is a rich variety of architectural styles, from timber and stone villas from the 1860s to functionalist villas.

Fun for kids in the fortified town!
We visit some of the Eastern Isles. Here we go cycling, or stroll along Kjærlighetsstien (Lovers’ Lane). We visit the historic island of Herføl. Here there is no motorised traffic, the only sounds are from the grasshoppers and boats on the fjord. We enjoy a lunch in one of the cafés with a sea view.
The Fortified Town is a lively place where children can play safely. Just as in the old days there are animals such as goats, ducks, and chickens at various places behind the ramparts.
There are playgrounds and parks, and activities the whole family can take part in.

Our journey starts along The Ancient Trail with a visit to the mystical stone circles of Hunn where Wivar, the High Priest, receives us as his guests. The Climbing Park has many varied aerial rope courses, something for everyone who wants to challenge themselves – from beginner courses to treetop routes.
And there are other popular activities: The Barn Jump (13 metres free fall), Segway, archery, frisbee golf, climbing wall, trampolining and mountain abseiling.
Safety is first class, you get a helmet and climbing harness on arrival. Everyone has to start on the practice course before moving on to loftier challenges. Sturdy shoes are recommended.

4.2 MEET THE TROLLSTravel in to the deep, Norwegian forests to a stone cave in beautiful surroundings far into the wilderness, built in stone and timber lit with wich 750 candles.
Enjoy the ride through the Norwegian country side. From the port the bus takes you into the forest wilderness in the inland, near the border to Sweden.
At the lake Risen you will be welcomed by the trolls. Join and enjoy when the trolls show you their games.
When it’s time for lunch you will enjoy local food such as a delicious moose stew in the unique atmospheric cave, Risen Grotte, situated in the forest, near the lake.
After the troll experience, the bus will bring you back to Fredrikstad with your heart filled by a beautiful troll memory after a day excursion.

4.1 IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF VIKINGS
King Olaf built a castle in Borg, and visited it frequently during his short and dramatic life. In 1019 he married Astrid here, daughter of the Swedish king Olof Skötakung.
The guests will get to know chieftains, warriors, men, women and child-ren and will be dressed up in Viking clothes on arrival. They will then be divided into groups, each being set a different challenge: shooting with bow and arrow, jumping, ‘glima’ wrestling – or composing Viking poems. A Viking meal will be served, accompanied by Viking entertainment.
The year is 1016. The great Viking king, Olaf Haraldsson, has just founded the town of Borg, and is giving a feast for his brave men. You are invited to the party!

Our first stop is at Hafslund Manor Farm, one of the finest in Norway! A long line of royal eminences have stayed at Hafslund, which was built in 1762 and is now a listed monument.
We continue across the Sarpefossen, the waterfall with the largest volume of water in Scandinavia – an average 577 cubic metres per second. There are now three hydro-electric stations here. The waterfall is a symbol of Sarpsborg, having revolutionised local industry. Our next stop is at Vamma Power Station. Utilising a fall in the Glomma river of 28,5 metres, this is the largest river-powered station in Norway.
We take lunch in spectacular surroundings – in close proximity to nature. Our next stop is Eidsberg Church, nicknamed The Østfold Cathedral. During the Middle Ages, when the Glomma was the main highway through the country, boats on the river used the 42 metre high steeple as a navigational landmark.

The region is known for its gentle and beautiful countryside with large wooded and cultivated areas and a myriad of fishing lakes. The forest floor is full of tasty delicacies. We taste local produce from a berry juice press. You can explore the Visitor Centre and an atmosphere blending our modern day with times gone by. We make a stop at the monumental Eidsberg Church, its 42 metre steeple dominating the landscape.
The farm was originally a croft under Soli Brug (sawmill). Haugsten is a working farm with livestock, organic apple production, and a farm shop where the farm’s own produce is popular. You will find delicious homemade honey, apple juice, and other handicraft and gift items.
