01Asylum centerReception center for asylum seekersKalvskinnet, Trondheim
The task was to design a reception center and temporary housing for asylum seekers.
Asylum seekers are a vurnerable group of people who need privacy and security to
process what has happened, but at the same time need a place where they can be seen
and noticed.
Research based on interviews from the different asylum centers indicates that the majority
of decentralized asylum centers were suitable for families, while centralized
reception centers were better for singles and those without children. Reports from
residents and staff have shown that loneliness is seen as a major problem among single
refugee, and the social aspect of living in communities is important.
We want to provide residents with sufficient privacy, but not hide them from each other
and the outside world. The residents should be able to choose different levels of
exposure, and to remain where they feel most comfortable at different times.
Asylum center 02 03 04 05 06 07
We operate with three different levels, each level offering different qualities from the other,
hoping the residents use the whole center.
The first floor is mostly public where residents can meet people from the city at home. This
level is quite transparent and has several lines of sight and review areas, and two outdoor
areas with different qualities. Here you will find the administration, reception and a flexible
activity room that can be used by the administration, residents, or an interaction between
them and outsiders. There is also a cafe / laundry where residents can meet other residents
and outsiders who are there to have a cop of coffee or doing their laundry. It is easier to
have a chat if you have something in common to do.
The three middle floors are dedicated to housing. These are mainly available for asylum
seekers. We operate with small communities of 4-8 sharing kitchen and living room to
promote socialization, but with private rooms and their own bathroom to ensure privacy.
Both type of rooms are a little over 2 meters wide so that you can choose where you want
to put the bed based on how exposed you prefer to be. A cabinet / rack system can be set
up against one end of the wall as a “regular” cabinet, but can also be separated as “Lego”
as the occupant can create the room he prefers.
The roof will have two roof terraces, each offering different moods at two different levels.
One will serve as a common socializing area with barbeque, greenhouse, sunbathing etc.
The second will be in the upper-level and will offer a quieter atmosphere in connection
with contemplation. The contemplation room is intended as a place for reflection, prayer,
reading, writing, etc.

02PROJECT NIAFOURANGYouth center with libraryNiafourang, Senegal
In the fall of 2011 i and two fellow students travelled to Niafourang, a small coastal village
in the Casamance region of Senegal. The population of Niafourang is around 300
inhabitants; the village is very poor with a high unemployment rate. Hilde Huus-Hansen
leads a non-profit organization; Friends of Niafourang, that works to improve conditions for
local youth and create job opportunities in the village.
BACKGROUND
December 2010 Hilde got in touch with us. She was looking to build a Youth Center in
Niafourang that would include a computer room/library and a larger multi-purpose room.
The intention was to create opportunities, jobs and development in the village. An
important aspect of the project was to involve the local community in both the building
and planning stages, in order to create a sense of ownership and pride in the resulting
building.
PROCESS
Work started shortly after arrival in Niafourang and lasted an intense 10 weeks. There is no
electricity in the village so apart from the use of a battery powered drill, no electrical
devices where used. There was great enthusiasm surrounding the project and the entire
village partook in volunteer work. This was entirely essential for the completion of the
building in the limited timeframe and very important for the buildings future.
The Youth Center is already in use and will hopefully contribute to positive development
in Niafourang. We hope the 10 week long building and planning process has left the local
community as inspired as it has left us.

03ROTORBicycle centerLerkendal, Trondheim
The main idea is to create a backdrop to the bike. An inspiring environment, which
facilitate cycling. The building should have a low threshold for use, everyone should feel
that they can take advantage of the offer, regardless of their skill level. A park has these
qualities. It is a public place where everyone can live and develop freely, and therefore,
the intention is to create a bike park. It is also important that the building appears as a bike
mascot for the city of Trondheim, and should appear as a portal on the way into the town.
The area is characterized by its neighbor to the west, Lerkendal stadium, and it is important
that the building does not compete, but juxtaposes itself.
THE BIKE
The bike’s premise is surfaces, not slopes, and therefore the projects intent and main grip
is horizontality. This is reflected in the building’s form having a horizontal section of the
heavy (base), the light (bike park) and the closed (office disk.) The idea is not that the
whole building will be rideable, but that the bike should be formative. The building only
consists of only three levels. The bikes activity is only on the ground floor. The idea is that
the pure volume and the clear stratification, should make the building easy to read.
THE COMPONENTS
The components and the entirety of the building will impose a Nordic forest. The base
(ramp and bike park) is the heavy swaying forest floor, the vertical tree trunks forming
pillars and office floor the forest crown. Color-wise, the building will serve as a canvas for
the vibrant green trees. The desire is to merge together the experience of inside and
outside.

04 BROSETSocial row housBroset, Trondheim
The task was to design sustainable housing for our time at Broset in Trondheim.
Concept
The social aspect is also a part of a sustainable development. How can the home and the
spaces outside encourage to personal and social development? I think it is time to form the
dwelling, so that it encourages for more contact and socialization. I then leaned towards
the neighborhood and the community. Is it still possible with an informal contact with your
neighbors within the private space but without breaking the intimacy of your own home?

TrestykkerTRESTYKKER is an independent workshop for students across the three Architecture schools
in Norway. The workshop is created and solely run by students.
The purpose of the workshop was to shed light on the Architecture student, as an aware
and active resource, capable to create living Architecture that stimulate use in
otherwise empty public spaces. A parallel goal was to give students practical knowledge of
the Architectural process, from the creative idea, to realizing and constructing the project.
The “Boathouse” is meant as a small intimate concert stage for up and coming artists.
