The Jury committee for the adjudication
of the Scholastic Art Awards 2009
was comprised of Heartwood’s most
esteemed faculty. They have not only
taught Foundation and studio classes
at a college level for many years,
but are working artists in their field.
These years of professionalism offered
expertise knowledge in mediums
including oil painting, pastel, drawing,
printmaking, ceramics, fiber art, jewelry
and photography. Their ability to
constructively evaluate pieces based on
individual merit, was a coordinated effort
and an invaluable component to the
process of defining “the next generation
of artists” in Maine.

SMMC Visiting Nurses
Annual Report
2009 Heartfelt Home care for 100 years!
Dottie Valentine represents one of the many individuals who have
received care and support from SMMC Visiting Nurses over the past
century. Dottie isn’t one to mince words. She knows what she likes,
dismisses what she doesn’t and has a delightful charm that is hard to resist.
She is independent and prefers to stay that way. But at 90 years of age,
it is challenging to live on her own. A variety of ailments related to her
advanced age require professional attention. The key to ensuring Dottie’s
independence, as it has been for thousands of individuals in southern
Maine over the past 100 years, is SMMC Visiting Nurses.
SMMC Visiting Nurses has evolved from a single person entity to a
national award-winning 70-person organization that was named to the
2008 HomeCare Elite, a compilation of the most successful Medicare-
certified home health care providers in the United States.
“We serve all of York County with the very best home care services,” notes
Elaine Brady, RN, MHSA, executive director of SMMC Visiting Nurses and
an employee for 27 years. “Our affiliation with Southern Maine Medical
Center enables us to provide the highest level of coordinated care with
electronic medical records that work in synch with the hospital’s system.
Physicians log on and receive reports from our nurses and therapists in the
field that provide updates on the status of their patients living at home.
With the aging of the population in Maine, the need for our services is
growing every day.”
According to a community study initiated by SMMC Visiting Nurses, people
65 years and older will comprise 16 percent of the population in York
County by 2012, a number that has increased over the past few years
as retirees choose to move to the southern Maine coast to enjoy the
advantages of the lifestyle here.
The growth in the aging population creates challenges for SMMC Visiting
Nurses. “We receive funding from private donations and some municipali-
ties,” says Elaine, “but in challenging economic times towns and individuals
are tightening their spending. Yet the need continues to grow.”
For Dottie, who was born just a few years after SMMC Visiting Nurses was
founded, the service represents more than independence. Her nurse,
Barbara Ingraham, RN, CDE, CWCN, has become a friend.
“The care she provides means a lot to me,” says Dottie, who has received
cardiac, diet and ostomy care for several years. “She boosts my morale,
gives me confidence and makes my day every time she visits. I look
forward to seeing her.”
This is a very special year for SMMC Visiting Nurses. We are
celebrating the delivery of a century of high quality heartfelt
home care to York County. Now we can add “award-winning” to
that statement. With the recent receipt of the 2008 HomeCare
Elite Award for quality and performance, we were recognized
as one of the most successful Medicare-certified home health
care providers in the United States. This annual review identifies
the top 25 percent of agencies, ranked by an analysis of perfor-
mance measures in quality outcomes, quality improvement and financial performance.
As a full-service home health agency, SMMC Visiting Nurses provides home visits which
include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language pathol-
ogy, medical social work counseling and home health aide contacts for assistance with
personal hygiene and activities of daily living. Our nursing expertise is available to our
patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We work closely with physicians in developing
plans of care so that each home health patient achieves the highest possible level of
independence and rehabilitation.
SMMC Visiting Nurses maintains a walk-in nurse clinic at our 72 Main Street location, which
provides residents with easy access to numerous preventive health screening tests, and,
of course, annual flu shots. We offer an extensive diabetes program and diabetic sup-
port groups. In addition, we manage the Breast & Cervical Health Program for all of York
County (no cost mammograms and pelvic exams for eligible women 40-64 years of age.)
We also provide a free loan closet of medical equipment (walkers, commodes, wheel-
chairs, etc.) at no charge. We started a Telehealth Monitoring Program (Well@Home) that
helps patients with chronic needs check their vital signs daily for close observation and
compliance with doctor’s orders.
We’ve grown a lot in a century and there will no doubt be even more remarkable advanc-
es in the years ahead. We sincerely appreciate all of the support of our professsional staff,
volunteers and those in the community who provide financial support. We look forward to
the next 100 years!
SMMC Visiting Nurses was
originally founded as the Kennebunk
Public Health Association in 1909
by the Parsons Family in order to
provide a public health nurse to
the Town of Kennebunk. Since that
humble beginning on the second
floor of the Pythian Building on Main
Street, the organization has evolved
and changed, just like the delivery
of health care. The one constant,
though, has been continuous service
in the provision of home visits and
health promotion activities to the
community.

Goose Rocks Beach access LawsuitRecently private property owners in Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport, filed a declaratory judgment suit against the Town of Kennebunkport for allowing the public to use the “private” portion of their beach. The suit seeks to force the town to recognize that certain landowners own their property down to the low water mark. The town of Kennebunkport filed a counterclaim.
