The Condor story began in 1893 when the Scheffer brothers produced their first bicycles. In 1908 they bought the land and built the first building on the present site.In 2011, the factory ceased its activities. The site is now owned by a friend who, in 2014, asked M. Biétry and myself, under the supervision of L. Lenherr to elaborate a project to give the site a new life.The swiss Government released funds to keep this industrial heritage and the engineering office RWB Groupe SA was asked to take care of the pollution as-pect and the feasability study. We the-refore worked in parallel with them. We also met several personnes representing local authorities in charge of the preser-vation of industrial and ground heritages, as well as pollution and floods aspects.

The first construction was built in 1908 and the last one in 1991, consequently the whole site is a constellation of various times and constructuion materials. The plans we found in the records do not necessarily correspond to reality. That’s why our first job was to draw up new plans, facades and sections of the factory spread out over 10’000 m2. This survey was made with the help of a laser pointer.We also undertook many historical researches into books and records, met former employees and shareholders. All this helped us to «feel» the spirit of the place and of the brand.

To make space, the factory will be parted in two. The west side, called active, with small and condensed programms; the east side will remain for the time, being passive with storage. Between these two sides, a perpendicular access will take place. Moreover, some buildings of smaller value are to be destroyed in order to give the area a more pleasant aspect.The center part of the factory will be a public pedestrian-only and covered street, with programms on both sides. The north side will be the residential area in the oldest part of the factory. The south side will be a small-production area. The surroundings will have to be cleansed. On the north side, a public garden will be created, making a sort of a barrier between the railway, the parking and the building.

Alps

The future ecological, economi-cal and demographic impacts will have a direct effect on our way of life, more particulary concerning the alpine territories. In fact, Swit-zerland is particulary concerned by this problem as it average tempe-rature increase 1.75°C since 1864, compared to the average world in-crease wich is «only» 0.85°C.We therefore studied these pro-blems, specially concerning the-future way of life in the alpine re-gions.

The water resources will create major problems during the next de-cades. In 2100, 90% of the total mass of the glaciers will probably have melted (Right page). This phenomenon will cause important floods during melting season and water shortage during the dry seasons. Consequently, it is of prime importance to think how to deal with water problems during these difficult times.We chose Riederalp-Bettmeralp area for our case study., as this region, located in «Canton du Valais», is close to the glacier d’Aletsch. This region is very touristic, particulary in the winter for skiing activities. The lack of snow will have a severe impact on its economics ressources. Its whole economy will therefore have to be re-studied, centering for instance its activities on summer tourism, as well as on how to envisage new ways to live in this region.Last century, the alpine territories situated between 900 and 1400m were used for agriculture. But, over the last decades, these territories lost a great part par their inhabitants; this due to rural depopulation and aging people. The global warming will be favorable to agriculture and to permanent dwelling at these altitudes. Therefore, a new impulse has to be given to these villages, some of them already with direct access to the valley via a telecabine.We propose to estblish links between them as they are often isolated, this in view to ameliorate the quality of the agriculture, and come back to more traditional ways of doing, using local irrigation systems and terrace cultures. This configuration will be an asset for the region and might encourage the agrotourism.Finally, the whole region will take advantage of the impulse; winter and summer activites become complementary, as the agricultors will also be able to work in the tourist sector during the winter seasons.

The old alpine vernacular cottages called «Mayens», often aban-donned, could be restored and used, for instance, as storehouses, «bed and breakfast» for tourist accommodation, small pubs or even for permanent dwellings.Next to these constructions, down stream the small irrigation ca-nals, stones terraces could be used for an agriculture adapted to these more alpine conditions, such as potatoes, vineyard etc., but keeping in mind that these altitude, because of global warming, will be better adapted in the future to more agrairian cultures. Upstream the canals, stock-farming would be an interesting complement and produce a natural fertilizer.Nice paths could also be built along the rides of the canals and become an attractive touristic offer.

Alps

While working on the subject, we extended our study to cities lo-cated in alpine territories, but this time in relation to the valley, with its major industrial and army in-frastructures often abandonned.We chose the Turtmann area with its old abandonned military airport.We had to find a new way to inte-grate this enormous infrastructure, keeping in mind the future pro-blems that we studied in the pre-vious work.

The Rhône valley (right page), where our project take place, is crossed by a motorway and a railway passing through indus-trial sites.This fertile plain, very well irrigated, is particulary favorable to cereal production. But rural surfaces are severaly disapearring to the benefit of the cities extention. This situation is recurrant in Switzerland as land surfaces are getting scarce. Therefore it is of prime importance to study these urbanisaton problems. The low and mid-high altituted rides of this valley are already colonized by villages, some of them having a direct access to the valley via a telecabine. The question is the following: would not it be preferable to preserve the fertil lands to move the urban expansion to the sopes unappropriate to agriculture but favou-rable to residential areas.Moreover, important military structures take place around the area. They were built during the cold war («réduit national») and became obsolete or abandonned, but are part of our history and have to be preserved. These places can be converted to serve agriculture, tourism, culture or for preventing natural di-sasters.

As explained before, the water resources will be of major importance and this problem will have to be dealt with during the next decades.The first major proposal would be to give the Rhône river, on his north bank a wieder and more natu-ral main stream. A vast zone liable to innondations would be expected to absorb exces water in case of floods.

The second major proposal concerns the re-cycling of the military airport, the creation of an agropark and a cultural area. The agriculture will be diversified, the alluvial soil near the river being better adapted for growing ce-reals, and the lands near the airport, of less quality, be used for fodder or aquaculture under shelter and take benefit of the airport to move machines or for setting up temporary markets. The airport can also be used for leasure activities (bicycle, modelism, roller etc.).The various cultures and soil utilization will provide the region with some energetic and alimentary in-dependance.

Space of Production

As industries are often located outside the cities, supplying the city consummers with finished products creates real transport problems. The idea is therefore to bring these production centers back to the cities and to re-study their morphology.Now, suppose the production cen-ters are converted from their pre-sent conventional horizontal form into vertical buildings better adap-ted to an urban situation.

The oblique structure holding the floors will make it pos-sible to create various spaces between the stories. The basement and the last floor, the biggest spaces, can be dedicated to common production. The start-up offices lo-cated in the stories could use the common production areas, share the costs, help one another and exchange ideas which will encourages creativity and development. In addition to these production areas, they could share meeting rooms, printing facilities etc.

Workshop atelier du Grand Paris

«L’Atelier International du Grand Paris» (AIGP) activates research, development, valorization and ani-mation related to the «Grand Pa-ris» challenges, more particulary via their scientific council.

Our atelier, suppervised by the professor Paola Viganò, has been invited to realize a one-week workshop in Paris.

Our case-study concerned the Seine river banks between Argenteuil and Betons. This very industrial zone is crossed by a 6 way road, plus the emergency lanes, making a bar-rier between the river and the industrial area. This enour-mous infrastructure is often under-used depending the hours of the day.Reducing the traffic to two lanes and suppressing the resi-dual spaces, 7 meters could be gained for pedestrian use.This new space could also be used for various projects, permanent or occasional, according to the seasons and time of the day.The industrial zone should be re-studied to decrease its im-pact on the environment. The huge parkings surrounding the building should be untarred to allow a better penetra-tion in the soil of rain waters in case of storms.
