SCAD Photographer’s Atelier

The Savannah College of Art and Design Photographer’s Atelier challenges the relationship between solid and void, public and private, and interior and exterior. The carving of interior space begins to blur the boundaries of the urban condition to the interior programmatic relationships. In understanding the interior void, the questioning of light and dark starts to organize space and creates opportunity to focus, mitigate, and diffuse light. The central atrium space is able to respond to the solar conditions of the Midtown site to capture light phenomenon, organize spatial relationships, and promote an interior + exterior urban interaction.

The Artisans Village becomes the engine that drives the process of revitalization for Eatonton, GA. By starting to create sensitivity towards the existing building framework, we can now develop a place of spectacle by capturing artistic performance and spectator relationships through the palimpsest of the existing buildings’ artifact. This produces a unique manifestation of multi-layered performative arts, by which an innovative space intersects the historic brick buildings; thus the details unite the old and new elements, and celebrates the artifact. (work done in collaboration with Daniel Gomez, Brad Richard, and Jorge Saravia)

The Five-Points site in downtown Atlanta becomes a node of public transportation containing multiple systems of transit, and it becomes apparent that they lack a unifying connection. The introduction of a transit hub creates a source of urban growth and density that allows the pedestrian to move throughout downtown. Also, by extending Broad St. and Alabama St. through and past the hub, two desirable street conditions become the basis for design expansion and begin to give the vehicular-based city back to the pedestrian. (work done in collaboration with Ryan Horgan)

ReconnectDowntownAtlanta

With a central point of the Five Points MARTA Station, the downtown area lacks a unifying connection of four different districts. The space in between becomes a place of disconnect programmatic dysfunction, and by looking at the distinctprogram of each district, one is able to understand how the outlying spaces begin to inform the centralized transit hub.

StoveworksBoutiqueHotel

The Stoveworks Development located in the Inman Park district of Atlanta is in the process of developing into a “small town down town”. With rentable office spaces on the southern side connecting to the developer’s office and the soon to be high-end retail + dining along Krog St., the entire space has potential to become a highly utilized area. The northern lot is at a key location with three sides to be considered for frontage: Irwin St, Krog St, and the Beltline. Each road / path becomes key in total contextual integration coupled with public interaction.

By approaching the Urban Incubator through the notion of human interaction, one can begin to understand how the collision of spaces yields professional and social interaction. This programmatic perspective allows for successful development and diversifying of local business. The site at Ivan Allen Blvd. and Peachtree St. sets up an interesting dynamic as an entrance to downtown and an initial path to public attraction. Each connection to the site begins to pull attention at key points that inform public space and points of entry. The site tensions orient program to an outward urban presence; thus, the understanding of program becomes apparent from the exterior through the collision of spaces. These forces also setup base paths of travel that become blurred as the pedestrian experiences the urban condition.

Alongside architecture, I am also very interested in graphic design, architectural photography, and the Japanese skill game known as kendama. I use these as further outlets for my creativity and pushing my passion for design and architecture.

My passion outside of architecture and design revolves around the Japanese skill toy, kendama. The kendama is a wooden skill toy containing three different sized cups, a spike, a ball with a hole, and a string connecting the two pieces. For me, kendama is my outlet in any context. Stressed while working? Play kendama. Bored at home? Play kendama. Looking for a challenge? Play kendama. Hanging out with friends? Play kendama. Need something to look good on my mantle? Put a kendama there. Kendama has allowed me to travel the world, create incredible memories, meet dozens of great people from different countries, and most importantly created another outlet to express my passion and creativity.

Do what you love.
