About me

A short introduction to myself

I attended Washington State University where I received two bachelor degrees: one in Communication with an emphasis in Broadcast News, and the second in Digital Technological and Culture with a minor in Professional Writing. At the age of 18, I thought I wanted to become a top notch news anchor. However, through college, I began to discover myself, and as I discovered the various layers that make up Jalisa Harris, I began to uncover my heart’s passions.

Through my undergraduate education I picked up photography. Then by my senior year, I was off studying abroad in multiple countries. During my travels, my Nikon D5000 ranked as one of my most cherished possessions. After two years of interning for Ike & Tash Photography + Motion, I used my camera to capture moments that otherwise would have been forgotten.

The images I caught through videos and pictures illustrate the significance and necessity of urban planners. I captured places: exquisite homes, cluttered shopping malls and abandoned shelters many called home. Many of these shelters provided more comfort for pollution, pesticides, and insects than for the people who sought refuge in them.

Studying abroad introduced me to the possibilities of planning, as I used my camera as an investigative tool. As a planner, I intend to create a better life for people and their communities, and in doing so, I will combine my undergraduate education with that of my planning education.

Hello there,My name is Jalisa Harris.

I am a Planner

I am a research assistant for Dr. Kickert and Dr. Edelman. As Dr. Kickert’s assistant, I take pic-tures of old archive newspapers dating back to the early 1800’s about planning initiatives, and maps of buildings for his research on Detroit. As Dr. Edelman’s assistant, I compile the MCP and PhD annual report.

Excerpt from Chapter 7:

11 12

In fall 2014, I took a workshop course entitled Managing Urban Environments. In this course students were paired in sector-level teams to prepare a 5-year plan for Metro Manila, the Philippines tackling the various environmental issues faced in the megacity. The end result was a published book on the matter. My partner, Paola Garrido and I, co-wrote chapter 7. We proposed 3 solutions to the solid waste crisis in Metro Manila while also creating a feasible budget plan.

This is an assignment from my Methods of Physical Planning course. The objective of this assignment is to teach students how to interpret zoning regulations and compare them to existing land uses in a selected zoning district to identify possible incompatibilities.

For this assignment I worked with Lu Zhao. Lu created the map, and I analyzed and compared the zoning regulations in Norwood, Ohio, to the existing land uses in that city.

Excerpt from written analysis:

Manufacturing including heavy and light industrials is the predominant land use type in Norwood and is zoned for 18.14%. However, the existing land use shows that only about 12.39% (the combined percentage of light and heavy industrial use) of the land is actually being used for this. Norwood has also been zoned for 12.25% (GBD + CBD + NBD) in commercial uses, but in reality only 8.88% of the land is actu-ally used for retail/commercial purposes. Often times, zoning is what the city would like to see happen. Owing to Norwood’s early success with industries, planners may have zoned for 18.14% in manufacturing and 12.25% in commercial uses as a way to bring back the economic development Norwood once enjoyed. Prior to the closure of General Motors Corporation plant in 1987, Norwood was thriving. However when the plant closed, it cost the city nearly 4,000 in job loss (The New York Times, 1987). Planners may be hopeful for a potential economical increase from these two sectors thus zoning more room for the possibilities of it.

Excerpt from written analysis:

This is an assignment from my Methods of Physical Planning course. In this assignment, students were asked to create several maps covering the decades in between 1970 to 2010 to analyze how population and housing densities have changed over time in their selected in neighborhoods.

For this assignment Lu Zhao created the maps, and I wrote the analysis.

Population, Housing and Density

#03

Norwood is a city located in Hamilton County, Ohio, and is a suburb of the larger city of Cincinnati, Ohio. In this assignment, population density trends in Norwood will be graphically represented, analyzed, discussed and used as a comparison to juxtapose the housing and population densities in Cincinnati and Hamilton County. The first map illustrates the shift in population over time in Norwood from 1970 to 2010. During the 70s, Norwood was very dense on the western and southwestern edges with approximately 10,000 persons per square mile. The western and southwestern edges of Norwood is probably denser due to the railroads, highways, and ramps being located near those areas. In the heart of the neighborhood, however, Norwood was less dense with about 50 to 200 persons per square mile. Over 10 year intervals, Norwood becomes less dense—which is clearly evident in 2010.

These are just a few photos I have taken. I am a portrait photographer. I love shooting people, and places I’ve explored, however, I am becoming more interested in landscape and architectural photography. The two images on page 2 were also taken by me. Those photos are from my visit to Kenya.
