Philharmonia is a public institution. However, most of the time it is hiding behind closed doors. The aim of design was to create an interactive institution which becomes an attractor of the area not only during main concerts. All foyer spaces are united into a volume opened into a square. This solu-tion brings the connection between the activities taking place inside with the surroundings. Grand scale of the Square of Culture allowed to create this vertical dominant. On top of the volume is situ-ated The Music-educational centre. It is an exhibi-tion space, which can be used both for philhar-monic’s educational activities and commercial events. The space flows into the view terrace. The volumes of two concert halls are standing out of the main volume. Vertical movement within the building is orientated to the facade which sup-ports the idea of transparent institution. Escalators act as a relief in the frame facing the square.

LIVING ZONE

SLEEPING ZONE

Bern University of Applied Sciences plans to build a new university campus in the city of Biel/Bienne. The main objective of the sum-mer school was to find an innovative solution for students’ living environment on top of existing buildings and its integration into the cityscape. Following a research we chose the former GM factory as the host building for our development. The city has a rich history in advancement of modern technologies and is proud of its GM car assembly heritage. The building is currently used as a super-market car park. It is a dead space laying between the city centre and the Lake of Biel. Positioning the campus will revitalise this area. Without any major alterations, the new living units will complement the aesthetics of the building. Each student will have their own liv-ing unit. Units can be moved to different positions within the main hall depending on the person’s needs - to move it to a new area, to fill up the water tank, to use a vacuum cleaner, etc. The units are flexible and can be joined to create double rooms. Space in between parked units creates dynamic communal living areas. Students can attach their unit onto a car trailer and take it if they move to another city to study or go on a summer holiday.

Bachelor projectSpring 2010 - FA BRNOTutor: Ing.arch. Jan SochorLocation: Prerov, CZE

The proposed building closes the corner of the city block at the attractive point of Becva waterfront. The place is a local rest area tied to the closed historical city centre. The ground floor is com-mercial with a cafeteria on the hip. There is a variety of kinds and areas of flats which lean on the parterre platform. The main idea is the connection between flats and river basin. Each flat has its pri-vate atrium or terrace with river overview and historical city centre of Prerov.

DESIGN PROCESS

Page 12: PORTFOLIO - JAN ERTL

A site is situated in a historical centre of Jihlava. A previous Jewish block was demolished and later left as an open area in the middle of the city blocks. This space of former court-yards is mainly used for parking and marketplace. Facades faced the area were designed as a back fa-cade, so there is a need to revital-ize the whole space. A proposed buildings strictly define public area and close the courtyards. The shape of northern building is not referred to the historical, rather to todays spatial situation. Block steps back from the edge and leaves an open public space in a form of a square. Compact dimensions of the square contrast with the main square which lies just around the corner.

Courtyards are lifted to the second level, where they create a semi private green area. The ground level consists of commercial spaces. An important urban connection to Palackého street is kept in a form of covered shopping passage. Segmentation of the facades reflects a proportions of the flat units. There is a variety of flats - from one space studios to duplex apartments with terraces.

Proposition of a training icerink for youth, small multipurpose hall and revitalisation of existing sports area of ÄLVSJÖ in STOCK-HOLM.

A site is strictly defined by its infrastruc-tural borders and it is a forgotten gap in-between them. A volume of the main hall stands straight on the axis from the Stock-holm fair. New artificial landscape area in front of building with a cut edge forms an invitation zone of the site. A main public place is sittuated on the other side of the building just behind the corner. Dimen-sions of this outdoor foyer space and the positions of both volumes avoid the sound pollution. Solutions focused on relationship between the different activities.

A proposition of a pre-school, a primary school and an auditorium for 500 spectators.

The solution was to divide a program into a three sepa-rate buildings. The auditorium stands on the edge of a park and serves public interests too. Using of flat floor and telescopic seats allow utilization for cultural events and sport activities as well. There is a cafeteria on the street level and school library accesible from a courtyard on a second floor. Volumes of the building of primary school and pre-school interact with the topography of the park. The focus is aimed at spaces in between the buildings: playground, outdoor areas for education, relaxing... Each classroom has its own terrace for outdoor educa-tion.

Daycare centre.

The building is located on the boundary of a forest area on the LIDINGO island in STOCKHOLM. The building is conceptually set to open itself into and interact with the forest. The two main volumes of the building are creat-ing a semi-open space, a courtyard, where the kids can enjoy their time safely, still surrounded by the forest. The transition between the forest and the courtyard is cre-ated by the covered roof, which by its tilt opens itself into the forest from the inside, but encloses the courtyard vi-sually from the other side. The space created under the roof should be used as a playground, or even as a place to sleep or relax if the weather permits.

Spring 2011 - FA BRNOTutor: Doc. Ing.arch. Akad.arch. Ivan Gürtler Ph.DLocation: Košice, SVK

Situated in the proposed Cultural Centre of the Carpathian region in the revitalised industrial area, which has an ambition to become a living antipole to the historical centre of Kosice. This institution should be a part of Kosice, the European Capital of Culture 2013. It should reflect the alternative cultural life of the city. The faculty is an im-portant aspect of this institution. The main idea of the proposal is to create an institution which will help to increase public interest in art.

The concept of the new faculty of arts is to create a central space which will be publicly accessible. It will be a common space for stu-dents and a place for exhibitions, and will consist of a cafeteria, a library, a small auditorium and a multifunctional hall. Pavilions for each department will be situated perpendicular to the main space. Spatial composition of the pavilions will create outdoor courtyards for students to work in. Most of them will be closed to the public, but a public promenade on level +1 will allow a spectacular view of these spaces and activities taking place between the pavilions.

8 houses in a row situated on a northern slope with access from the south. Therefore not enough sunlight reaches the rooms located in the lower floor. Solution is CONCEPT of a PERISCOPE: the missing light is brought in by overlitting (lighting) through the gallery. A volume of garage separates a street to small courtyard and prevents the pass-erbies from looking straight into the building. Technically, the building is constructed as a low-energy house with reaching levels of U= 0,18 W/m2K. Houses have a shared technical equipment such a central heating with recuperation of a fresh air and solar panels for even more efficient using of energy.

The shape of the building is inspirated by a WATER WAVE. Whole pavillion should act as a sculp-ture with a feeling of lightness and almost levitation. The construction is sustained by air pressure contained in the textile tubes, standing on a base-ment made of pre-fab concrete. This solution allows to use it as a tempo-rary pavillion for variety of events or for seasonal use. The main space for exibiting, which creates a fluent tran-sition between the surroudnings and the building, and is only defined by wavy light partitions. It creates spac-es for an eventual bar, storage and hidden space for all important tech-nology.
