NEIGHBORHOOD - a housing strategy for staying in the inner city - diploma semester

Important factors in a good living environment such as safety, a sense of belonging and a good neighborhood, requires a certain stability. High turnover of residents is a result of poor living and housing quality.

I examined living and housing qualities I believe can reduce turnover of residents and therefore create a better living environment in the inner city. Each examined quality, repre-sented in diagrammatic sketch models formed a program for a residential structure.

The context of Herslebs gate 31 at Tøyen, Oslo, is an urban infill within a neighborhood undergoing gentrification, strug-gling with a high turnover of residents.

The thesis is an example of how a strategy of specific quali-ties and capacities can generate architecture that facilitates a good neighborhood.

Structure and organization

The units should have daylight from two sides or more. The staircase should have daylight and if it lies in the facade it should be to the north or positioned to give the best light qualities to the apartments.

The depth of the neighboring gables is a great limitation for placement and organizing of the site. But relat-ing directly to the gables makes the orientation of the staircase and elevator too limited and leaves little usable space. Pulling 1,7 meters in - the same as the neighbor-ing balcony - leaves more space for a central vertical structure.

By pulling back in the southwest corner, the new volume and balconies are interfering as little as possible with the existing sun conditions of the neighboring balcony. The ground floor connects directly to the backyard where the two units have a private little garden increas-ing the quality of the ground floor apartments. All apartments are wheel chair accessible. The verti-cal structure is centered leaving as much facade to the apartments as possible. The following qualities will reason even more of the organizing.

By elevating the ground floor apartments, as much as possible, a direct visual contact with the passers by is avoided.

Page 7: Portfolio Johanne Killi

Ground floor and staircase

Entering your gate is passing a boundary. The threshold to your territory and your neighbors. Not your community or the rest of the city. When entering from the street you should see daylight from the backyard. The staircase should have daylight from facade, light well or skylight. When inviting guests to your home the entrance, ground floor and staircase is the first meeting with your home.

The stairwell is the feeling of coming home. And the feel-ing of being on the way out. The space is very important in your everyday life. It’s the surroundings of the mental process when you leave in the morning and come home in the afternoon. Both the entrance door and stairwell plays a big role in your sense of belonging and sense of identity.

The stair revolves around an opening enabling daylight to be let in through out the day.

8 91:50Usable space

Usable space

The size of a housing unit is dependent on the number of residents. Regardless there should be a proper space to gather around the kitchen/dining table. A place to eat or work - alone or while others are doing their own thing – in the same room. With proper chairs.

In an area with a large amount of small housing units, there should be planned large units. Especially in the inner city, so that residents have the opportunity to stay in the same area even when the family increases. This being said, square meters are costly in the inner city, and the need for smart solutions that consider volume and ceiling height, can give greater spatial opportunities.

The aim is not the large apartment, but being able to stay in the same apartment when the family increases. This contributes to creating a more stable neighborhood in terms of resident turnover.

Page 9: Portfolio Johanne Killi

8 91:150Direct daylight throughout the plan

Light

Recreational space like living and dining room, spaces for work and play as well as kitchen should have direct contact with daylight from the facade.

There are some advantages to the bedrooms being oriented to the east or north facade. This is so that the bedrooms will not get heated by the sun in the evening and direct sunlight can reach in in the morning to wake you up. In addition to this, by raising the ceiling height to at least 2,8m, daylight of all kinds can reach further into the space.

I organized the plan of the apartments in such a way that there is direct daylight through out the plan. Indirect daylight in a continuous plan could also work, but I found that the capacity I wanted for the plan demanded a more linear organizing of the functions.

An uninterrupted path in the apartment letting light through. Functions like bathroom and bedroom activate the path because sliding doors allows the path to extend.

Material

Striving for sustainable and durable details and adequate choice of material will give specific tactile experiences from arriving at street level to your apart-ment and its interior. Throughout the dwelling the benefit of durable details will present itself after a short period of time. Materials that age and hold, have a long interval between maintenance and materials that easily can be replaced regardless of manufacturer. These materi-als and details are memorable and create a story. It is sustainable in a long period of time.

Building with easily maintained materials can also give the residents an ownership through common mainte-nance as well as in the private dwelling. It is important that residents have possibilities to create individual solu-tions, suiting family needs, work, hobbies etc.

This shows both the exposed concrete slap in the ceiling and exterior walls. A possibility for seating in the window and ceiling height that allows a mezzanine to free more space in the bedrooms.

Space for meetings

Leaving spaces that permits interpretations. In this way it will take on its identity through use. By the mailboxes, on a stair landing or other parts of the common area in a residential building.

With room for two or more. The conversation will not start if it’s not given room for it. But given the opportunity, meetings like this can create con-nections.

With access to the private or common outdoor area on the roof top with shelter from rain and wind as well as perfect sun conditions.

Zoning of the common area can contribute to the residents feeling a sense of ownership to parts of the shared territory. Being able to use the space at the same time without having to talk to your neighbor the entire evening.

hostel - urban transformation in timber - 10th semesterwith sunniva helseth and anja lauvli schley

By using the history of the site as inspiration for the concept and design we continued the original network of streets, providing clear zones for cars, cycles and pedestrians in con-nection to both the existing building on site, and the new one.

The site, located in Maridalsveien 10, is only a 10-minute walk to the city center and holds an existing curved building from 1938 with a listed facade. The surrounding area is urban with residential buildings, green areas, bars, concert venues, Mathallen and art scenes. The main challenge of the site con-sists of sound pollution due to traffic. We therefore suggest temporary housing with a ground floor that is inviting but still creates a transition between the soft and heavy road users. The concept and design of the new building, is based on the history of the site and its given restrictions. Looking into old maps of the site, the development ranges from narrow parallel streets (Ladegater), to the larger roads of today. We wanted to reintroduce the scale of the history, creating a new pedes-trian street in the existing situation. Our addition to the site is therefore a narrow street and a new building at the north side of the existing building, connecting in some places to the existing situation and building.

The program contains a hostel with possibilities for independ-ent bar area. Given the traffic and challenges of the surround-ings it is suitable with temporary housing. The ground floor’s service program will help bringing activity to the area.

The main entrance for the hostel is in the existing building through the narrow street. The ground floor of the new build-ing is in addition to the reception area for guests, a public venue that can be closed entirely off from the rest of the hostel.

When entering the narrow street, one can see that the life and social areas of the hostel are oriented to the street as a public core. The stairs and bridges connect the two buildings, and are in use both as a circulation and for common seating areas and niches.

The hostel holds 168 guests. The dorms in the existing build-ing are on the 1st and 2nd floor, oriented towards the south. In the new structure the dorms are oriented along the curved northern facade on the 1st to 3rd floor.

The guests have access to the roof terrace on the existing building and a common dining on the 4th floor of the new building.

HOSTEL Sunniva Helseth, Johanne Killi and Anja Lauvli Schley

In an urban belt moving from Oslo city center to Vulkan, there is a break in the continuity of attractive areas for pedestrians and bicyclists. The site, situated next to a well-used roundabout is key when bringing activity back in to this area. The hostel will serve as a new face to the surroundings, inviting for new uses of both the site and the surroundings at all times of the day.

a give and take situation - b3 - the new collective - network9th semester

One of the most basic laws in nature is a give and take situation.

Newton’s Third Law:To every action there is always opposed an equal reaction. The mutual actions of to bodies upon each other are always equal, and directed to contrary parts.

It is a market of forces. The force and the action. The anti-force and the reaction. I might view the reaction as lighter than the ac-tion. Heavy and light in a construct. The presence of failures many possibilities. Optical illusions and attempts to manipulate the laws of nature. In a visual sense. Creating heaviness out of lightness and lightness out of heaviness. Facilitating to explore how light and how heavy. Imagining the context and ways of viewing the space. Exploring the believable potentials of the space. How I might solve

it? What would hold it? How do I get to it? Is it something?

It’s a shortcut. I view it as an experience not a destination. The space has many potentials. I am pushing it to be a movement. I like that the space is a part of a larger assembly of something made. It is urban. It confronts its superiority. My original model and thoughts of the give and take is still the driver. The force and the action

It is a point in an urban context. The collective as a transit, connecting the different layers of the city in a new way. It is a space that holds you even though you are moving through it.

When you are walking slantedly you are in the space.

konsthall - solna - stockholm7th semester with simon estieWe wanted to create a museum where the artworks are allowed to be the center of attention, rather than the form or shape of the building itself. This led us to the decision of working with basic shapes and simple geometries to differentiate the journey through the museum. Simple boxes of various sizes creating generous and flexible spaces for different kinds of exhibi-tions. The assembly of these boxes on the other hand is complex and creat-ing an interesting movement through the museum.

The boxes intersect with each other to create of poché spaces, outdoor and indoor niches and a varied contact with the hill and the nature. The intersections are method of the transitions between the boxes in terms of form and material. They also intersect with the hill creating cut out parts, negative or subtracted spaces that create outdoor exhibition spaces.

Due to the varied roofs and lighting conditions for each of the exhibition rooms the museum is constructed with a rough in-situ cast concrete struc-ture, cast with a form made of rough planks, painted white. This creates a neutral but soulful framework for display of various types of artworks. The facade is constructed from 500mm wide vaulted panels of anodized aluminum in different colors, ranging from green to blue and silver. The non-walkable roofs are covered with sedum, both to take care of rainwater on the flat construction and to create a visual coherence to the ground when seen from the hill.

nattvindauge - skøyen - oslo - 6th semester

is it possible to use a selection of edward hopper paintings as an instrument to create architecture and space?

i used the perspectives in edward hoppers (1882-1987) paintings as an instrument for creating relations. exploting another approach to an urban setting. it is a minicity in the intersection of the meg-atructures at skøyen and the smaller houses at hoff.

the units are equipped with 1-2 rental spaces. the residents themselves can choose to let out the space or use it as a common area or accommodation form guests.

the rental spaces on the ground floor are more spe-cific programs such as restaurant, café, bar, grocery shop, shoe repair and hair dresser.

i chose to move the tram stop to the north-east side of the site. also connect harbitzaléen with st.edmunds vei to create a crossing of the site not existing today.

i kept existing trees on the site and added a minimum of new trees. these are differentiated in the site plan.

ísafjörður nature bath 2nd semester with einar eltonthe last project in ísafjörður, iceland. we made a nature bath in 1 km from ísafjörðurs waste incinerator so the incinerator could provide hot water. the nature bath is ment for the inhibitants of ísafjörður and the visiting cruise tourists. the facility is at the base of mt. kubbi beside a field where livestock graze.

the potetial avelanches was a major factor in the design prosess. bylooking at bridges like pont du gard-aqueduct in nîmes and how it deals with the threat of an overflowing river which might damageing items into the pillars, we decided to raise our construction high upon concrete triangles facing the mountain. that way avalanches would cause minimum damage. the nature bath is also provided with fresh water from the mountain.

bruder klaus chapel - 1:10 - 2nd semesterpeter sumthors chapel in mechernich, germany 2007. we made the formwork for both the inside and outside of the chapel in a 1:10 scale. the complicated form demanded some reinforcement for the thinest part of the wall at 4 cm. to get the inner formwork out we sat fire to the model, just like the constuction workers did. our model

with siri idland, daniel loe and øystein aakranhow ever didn’t burn for several weeks. only 15 min. the atmos-phere and pictures we were able to take from the tipi shaped room was very simular to the description of the full scale chapel. the model ended up weighing more than 1100 kg. not surprising after pouring more than 450 liters of concrete into the fromwork.

sjikt - hydro powerfacade workshop - 4th semester with anders sølvberg, einar elton, eirik tollåli, trude langeland, eirik stiansen and inghild lunn.

a 3 day workshop with a limit of 6x6x6 m. a simple glass building is braced frame steel stucture. the southern wall trappes hot air between the glass and the concrete block with a chemical heat magazine. the exothermic and endotermic reactions inside the magazine heats up the gallery when the sun is down. hot air es-

capes through vents at the top and enables fresh air to enter in the opposite end of the gallery. by using white fabric on the eastern and western wall and alluminum on the northern wall the sculptures will get indirect light. the fabric is also inweaved solar receptive threads to create electrisity for lighing at night.

as a part of the world wide parkingday we payed for a parkinglot at thereses gate in oslo. we wanted to show how mush space the car takes up in the inner city. we drew a reasonably sized student housing plan on our site. this resulted in massive attention from passing cars and pedes

triants. we were event invited up to one of the nabouringappartments so that we could take this photo. a very in-spireing 3 day workshop.

parking day - oslo - 5th semester with gro krüger, liv mari oppebøen, victor ramn, anders sølvberg, eirik stiansen and marjan mirabedin.
