Our site was located where Prince Street Park is currently, by the water at the edge of the Northend. We were tasked to create a pavilion that would provide shelter and facilitate a connection between a commuter boat, that would dock by the site, and the city.”

Space & Form

The form of a structure creates a clear composition of how space is organized. It devises a clear and distinct seperation of space. Also, form defines path, providing an organized way for people to flow from one point to another. As a result, form establishes a sense of order, being able to both seperate and intergrate space. The pavilion that is being designed, through the use of form, produces a clear sequence of spaces that efficiently directs the movement of people through the site. In addition, the pavilion provides distinct seperate regions that creates an organized utilization of programming.

My analysis begins with the serpentine gallery designed by Jean nouvelle. An aspect of the design that intrigued me was the separation of spaces and how each section had its own distinct characteristics yet they worked cohesively together.

This diagram explains the role of spatial seperaton and how it produces a clear compistion of spatial reltionships and experiences.

PLACE OF GATHERINGGREEN SPACE

The idea was to create three seperate spaces that were each defined in their own way. The first space, Space of Gathering, was a place where people would congregate. This would be the most populated space. Space of Transition, the second space, would be slightly less crowded compared the first space. This area would be used more for travel. The final space, Space of Rest, would be a much smaller area as well as more interment and quiet. This space is used for sitting and relaxation.

With the introduction of program in the project, I began to flesh out my original idea of three distinct areas, place of gathering, transition, and rest.

The space of gathering would be where people could congregate and wait for the boats arrival. The structure also had a cafe where one could order something to eat and relax

The space of rest is a quiet space, isolated from the other structures on the site, where a person could sit. The place of transition is the complete opossite of rest. People are either passing by to the gathering area, or buying theirticket for the ferry.
