FILM ACADEMY

The Academy for the Study and Production of Film is located next to Ensemble lightrail stop in Houston, TX. The building wraps around a central water courtyard, mimicking how a camera body wraps around a “phenomenal lens.” All of the enclosed rooms provide carefully controlled spaces for light and sound. In contrast, the water courtyard resonates light and sound throughout the open, public spaces.

HAITI RELIEF SHELTER

In 2010, a magnitude 7.0 M earthquake created devastation in Haiti. Designed in partner-ship with Ying Tao and Kelly Barlow, the Haiti Relief Shelter aims to create a shelter that can be erected quickly, but can also act as long-term housing. The primary materials used to construct this house are concrete and plastic panels. Combined, a “smart plastic” perma-nent house is created in less than two weeks. This house is resistant to earthquake forces, can withstand hurricane force winds (155 mph+), is energy effi cient, and cost-effective.

TRADITIONAL STUDIES

The ink and graphite studies investigate form and spatial relationships. One of the most fascinating analysis projects involved arranging and rearranging structures in order to create or obstruct views.

NATURAL SYSTEMS

These studies show the context (in light, realistic), cut sections, synthesis (relationship of the part to the whole, overall geometry, underlying structure, constituent systems, and life cycle), and essence (relief that captures the essential organization and form) of the bell pepper.
