  • 65 MINUTE CHARCOAL drawings on newsprint were completed from a selection of photos taken during our site visit.

    DRAWINGS SHREDDEDto create collages, this abstraction of the images prepared materials for the next step.

    GRID LINES ON VELUM denoting typical archeological grids placed for excavation purposes, were placed over the collage.

    TIMED LINE DRAWINGS completed using only straight lines & stippling, What was attractive on the collage was brought to the surface.

    LINES, CURVES, AND DOTS were separated by the grids marks and placed individually onto the site map to find matching patterns, lines, and connections.

    APPROACH REDIRECTED Typical site design methodologies changed during the exercise, moving the process away from way-finding and circulation pattern correction, allowing discovery to dictate site design.

    Goal: Create an archeological park in two phases. Phase one involves excavation into the concrete bridge remains, existing foundation, and the cistern area of the olive grove wall. The information gathered informs phase two, the design and placement of large glass structures that evoke the structures and lifestyle that once existed over these fields. The result is an attractive destination for not only the locals and educated archeological tourists, but a draw for everyone attempting a glimpse into the visual history of this fantasy villa.

    PHASE ONE

    Lines matching the suspected direction of the bridge created a perfect match with the cistern and the bridge support structure. Excavating the support structure could provide a wealth of knowledge as to the architectural prowess of the builders of the pre-Vesuvian era.

    Some hatch marks lining up with the direction of the bridge caused other hatch marks to cover the cistern area and the entrance to the cove. This match, in addition to the excavation proposed for the cistern, provoked movement interventions, a stairway down through the excavated cistern, and another leading visitors to the swimming hole.

    An array of lines and patterns hinted at a semi-circle near the cistern area. This particular area of the olive grove hosts a beautiful view of the entire site, and provides an ideal spot for an overlook.

    Marks and curves lining up with the foundation also matched the suspected direction of the villas facade. In the spirit of choosing areas to dig by random selection, lines intersecting with walls dictated the excavation areas. The excavations could provide architectural clues to the structures they once supported. Developing a real-size facade to show the immensity of the villa evolved into an opportunity to show the buildings size in different ways in many areas.

    Currently the olive grove has a depression near the cisterns leading many to believe that the two features are related. Excavating the depression would provide knowledge of ancient water gathering techniques.

    WORKING DIRECTLY WITH THE LOCAL ARCHEOLOGICAL AUTHORITIES AND THE SORRENTO MUSEUM, A PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED THAT INCLUDED A MULTI-YEAR INSTALLATION SERIES AROUND THIS STUDIO PROJECT TO PROMOTE ARCHEOLOGICAL TOURISM TO THE SITE, AND PROVIDE A UNIQUE VIEW INTO THE RUINS OF VILLA DI POLIO FELICE.

    THREE PROMINENT GLASS ARTISTS WERE SUGGESTED BASED ON THEIR METHODS AND FIELDS. EACH ARTIST WAS GIVEN THE RESPONSIBILITY TO EMULATE SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS THAT ALIGN WITH THEIR PAST PROJECTS, THE FINAL CREATIONS PROVIDING A PORTAL INTO THE REALITY BEHIND THE RUINS.

  • Howard Ben Treis a master artist that has defied boundar-ies and restrictions to create the most for-midable glass artwork in the field. His tech-nique of creating cast glass requires months of slow cooling (an-

    nealing), and reveals artwork emulating structures that transcend time and provide a window into other times. An ideal choice for the first installation in the Simulacrum Se-ries, his style would evoke the architecture of the site. (Pieces shown left to right: Post and Lintel, 1989; )

    Mary Shafferhas worked with glass since the early 1970s where she pioneered the slumped glass method. Miss Shaffer manipulates glass in unique ways to create soft forms and struc-tures that use the sur-

    rounding light to create heavily emotive, airy pieces. Marys role in the Simulacrum Series would incorporate pieces emblematic of the human habitation of the site. (Pieces shown left to right: Three by Four, 2003; Sunset, Deep Blue Curtain, Turning Red 2, and Cen-ter-Light.)

    Dale ChihulyHis reputation is cast from a mix of Ven-ice, Italy and Seattle, Washington. His art is fiery energy, and solid architecture. His technical acu-men creates decora-tive art with unparal-

    leled intricacies. Mr. Chihuly would provide the finishing touch to the story of the Villa. His influence would be ideal to demonstrate the materiality of the ancient villa.     AD White HouseChimney Replacement Project

    This High Victorian Gothic mansion, begun by Miller but finished by Babcock, was built for A. D. White and his family. The building is constructed of red brick, with Gothic detailing and proportions in the tower, oriel and engaged one-story tower on the east facade, with hipped roofs on the main body of the building and the attached eastern wing. The roof line is punctuated by the main western tower, and four slender chimneys on the exterior walls. In 1911 a south wing was added, designed by William H. Miller. In 1921 the house was remodeled to accommodate President Farrand and his family, who occupied the house until 1937. In 1953 the building was once again renovated to accommodate its use as an art museum, and later, a teaching

    facility for the Society for the Humanities. The AD White House Localized Roofing Replacement and Chimney Restoration Project consists of the replacement of the upper hipped portion of the main roof and the restoration of seven brick chimneys. The proposed scope of work is intended to replace and restore the existing architectural features of the localized area of the roof and the chimneys with historically appropriate materials, and detailing. The project is scheduled to start on May 7th, 2010, and be substantially complete by August 24th, 2010. The facility is to remain open during construction.

    Morrill HallStairway Replacement Project

    In 1868 Morrill Hall was constructed as the first building on the Cornell University campus. It is a designated National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The buildings exterior stone masonry stairs have suffered deterioration due to weathering and corrosive action of deicing materials. Two of the stairs are being replaced this summer with similar and historically appropriate masonry materials such as New York State Bluestone, Onondaga Limestone, and black Granite. These materials together with improved construction methods ensure enhanced resistance

    to weathering and corrosion and sustained functionality for the next 50 to 100 years. This project received a Certificate of Appropriateness and approval from the City of Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Committee of the Building Department and will be complete by August 15, 2010. Next year, pending funding availability, the University will undertake similar exterior stair replacements on the west side of Morrill and McGraw Hall. The photos herein illustrate the stairs prior to demolition.

    McGraw Hall Faade Stabilization Project

    McGraw Hall constructed in 1872, designed by Archimedes Russell, of Second Empire Style Architecture along the west side of the Arts Quadrangle centered between both Morrill and White Halls. Russell referenced the style and design of both Morrill and White Halls providing a central focal point between the two facilities.

    McGraw Hall is built of Ithaca Bluestone with a mansard slate roof of different colors arranged in horizontal bands and bulls eye dormers; this four story building is honored with the first of many of the Universitys towers.

    The building features five bays, with quoins delineating each bay, tall and narrow arched windows adorned with voussoirs, smooth-cut stone sills.

    An investigation and analysis of the exterior masonry construction of McGraw Hall revealed the need to stabilize the exterior masonry faade. The proposed stabilization effort is to temporarily brace the masonry construction until a permanent repair can be implemented.

    The stabilization effort will consist of steel frames braced against the eastern and western faades of the center section using steel rods that pass through the facility to tie them together. The proposed ties will utilize the existing window openings as to not disturb the masonry and will be attached to a symmetric frame on the opposite elevation of the facility.

    McGraw Hall Roof Replacement Project

    he McGraw Hall Roof Replacement project involves repairing localized components of the deteriorated tim-

    ber roof framing and restoring the facilities roofing system. The deteriorated condition of the roofing system has contributed to the degradation of both the timber and masonry structural components. The intention of the phase of the project is to protect the recent repairs to the roof framing system, and the distressed masonry construction from con-tinued moisture infiltration by restoring the buildings roofing system and masonry con-struction at the roofline.

    The proposed scope includes repairing the upper hipped and lower mansard portions of the roofing system, replacing the gutter sys-tems, and repointing the open mortar joints within the limestone cornice and masonry chimneys. The decorative slate pattern that is visible on the steep sloped mansard roofs is to be replaced in kind with like materials to replicate the existing pattern.

    The use of architectural asphalt shingles will replace the modified bitumen rolled roof that is currently installed. Historic photographs suggest that slate was the original roofing material, which was replaced by a standing seam metal roof prior to the 1900s. Both options were explored and during the design phase, but where ruled out due to loading concerns, and detailing issues with the exist-ing configuration of the dormers in the roof. It is recommended to replace the architec-tural shingles with the original design intent once the facility is renovated.

    The reconstruction of the gutters system along the perimeter of the roofline is pro-posing to introduce five new downspouts to help mitigate the storm water runoff from the roof. Placement will provide symmetry between the north and south wings as well as the center section reducing the run in within the gutter to properly drain the water.
