INTERN FRIENDLY FIRM PROGRAM

The AIA Portland Intern Friendly Firm program is a training and professional development framework created to aid interns in their path towards licensure by assisting firms in codifying and clarifying their training and mentorship efforts. The program was created by AIA Portland’s Emerging Professionals Committee (EPC) in the fall of 2008 and is in use at firms across the city.

The benefits of the AIA Portland Intern Friendly Firm program are widespread: interns, firms and the profession as a whole is helped. For interns, it assists them in bridging the gap between education and experience by providing an environment prone to mentorship, and preparing them for successful completion of the Intern Development Program (IDP) and the Architectural Registration Exam (ARE).

For participating firms, the program creates an atmosphere of learning and professional growth. It promotes the professional development of interns so that responsibility may be shared among staff, and interns—with their increased knowledge—become more profitable to the firm. Furthermore, this program serves to create a positive reputation for the firm among likely recruits, and aids in the retention of employees.

For the profession, this program fosters knowledge sharing between emerging professionals and experienced professionals. The program also serves to reinforce the importance of obtaining licensure. Lastly, as interns attain knowledge growth through the assistance of the IFF program, the profession as a whole is bolstered by the increased knowledge base of its members.

For more information about the IFF program, and the Emerging Professionals Committee (EPC), visit us online at www.aiaportland.org.

architecture w was founded in 2001 by partners Michel Weenick and Brian White. Known for its simple yet engaging designs, the studio is founded on the pursuit of quality, craft and a belief that the art in architecture plays an important role in the quality of our collective lives. There is a deep and embedded history with nature in the cultures of Japan and the Pacific Northwest. Through our offices in Nagoya and Portland, our studio explores the relationship between nature and architecture—explorations of space, light and landscape.

Principals Michel Weenick AIA; Brian White, AIA, NCARB

Projects/Awards architecture w has received numerous design awards for our work, including an AIA Honor Award for the m house and an AIA Merit Award, and Smile Aichi Housing Award for the M/F house. We were also fortunate enough to receive one of the rare Root awards for the Stump House.
